Outstanding. The author has done incredibly well in getting the reader a ‘boots on the ground’ view of the war, letting you live it rather than just having exposition. All of the characters are great to read about, the war keeps you in its grip, and the heresy trudges on

Perfect. The best sci-fi book I’ve ever read.

All curtain opener, no climax. Lots of interesting threads, but nothing is resolved here, which robs the book or a climax. Worse, most surprises are already well known to any who know the Horus Heresy story. There is something going on behind the scenes here, but we clearly won’t find out until book 2. aExperiments in 2nd person narration are all well and good, but the normally reliable Abnett came up dry here. My guess is this was rushed. Skip this and read volume 2. The biggest mistake here was dividing itself in twain as it does not deserve two books. This first doest not climax - it just ends. The Siege of Terra series continues to flag well behind the Horus Heresy series, but damn them for making me buy everything they print… I live in hope. Perhaps the Scouring will deliver?

Not with a bang…. Amazing, Gripping, and odd.

Could’ve been a lot better. Abnett’s usually compelling writing style is almost completely absent here. Fans of his previous works such as Horus Rising and Prospero Burns will be disappointed to find his unique character and world building very thinly applied to what should be a thrilling climax. Instead, Abnett focuses on fragmentary stories from various agents he has referenced from previous works in the series. Unfortunately, none of these really hit the mark and the book suffers from an apparent lack of editing, endless descriptive passages and a story that neither delights nor engages the reader. Rather, It is a frustrating, disjointed and overwrought affair which makes it clear that Abnett doesn’t shine when given such a narrow framework with which to work. Here’s hoping part 2 will be better and not just an excuse to split the climax into two parts so that, we the fans, can be charged twice for reading a disappointing ending to what has been a superb series of books.
