Y poco a poco, durante seis largos años, por caminos inesperados, irán entretejiendo la historia, para al final, quedar a las puertas de la muerte en la hoguera. La emocionante peripecia y la colorista reproducción del Perú de los vireyes, bajo el Imperio español no ocultan, sin embargo, una aguda exposición de lo que es esencialmente una cuestión metafísica: la naturaleza de la voluntad divina.
El puente de San Luis Rey, segunda novela escrita por el maestro Thornton Wilder, tuvo una gran acogida en el momento de su publicación y ganó el Premio Pulitzer ese mismo año 1928. Desde entonces ha sido venerada por legos y críticos y sigue siendo hoy considerada como una de las grandes novelas del siglo XX. Sin duda, una auténtica perla, una pequeña obra maestra que fue llevada a la gran pantalla con Robert de Niro como protagonista.
