Theodor Herzl (1860–1904), Journalist, Dramatiker, Science-Fiction-Autor, Aktivist und Visionär, ist vor allem als der Mann in Erinnerung, der die politische Plattform schuf, auf der 44 Jahre nach seinem Tod der Staat Israel gegründet wurde. Nach langem Zögern entschloss er sich 1902, seiner politischen Utopie auch eine literarische Form zu geben. »Herzl erweckt vor unseren Augen die bisweilen glanzvolle, meist aber elende Welt der Juden um 1900 im Habsburger Reich zum Leben. Er schildert fast schon auf Dickens'sche Weise die soziale Not seiner Gegenwart, er wirft einen Blick in die nicht immer so glamouröse Wiener Kaffeehauskultur, und er lässt uns die Zwangslage der aufstrebenden jüdischen Bildungsschicht miterleben, die trotz Emanzipation und Assimilation in einer Sackgasse steckt und, gerade wo sie erfolgreich wird, mit latentem oder offenem Antisemitismus konfrontiert wird.« Karlheinz Steinmüller in seinem Vorwort
