Once We Were Brothers by Ronald H. Balson Book Summary

The gripping tale about two boys, once as close as brothers, who find themselves on opposite sides of the Holocaust.

"A novel of survival, justice and redemption...riveting." —Chicago Tribune, on Once We Were Brothers

Elliot Rosenzweig, a respected civic leader and wealthy philanthropist, is attending a fundraiser when he is suddenly accosted and accused of being a former Nazi SS officer named Otto Piatek, the Butcher of Zamosc. Although the charges are denounced as preposterous, his accuser is convinced he is right and engages attorney Catherine Lockhart to bring Rosenzweig to justice. Solomon persuades attorney Catherine Lockhart to take his case, revealing that the true Piatek was abandoned as a child and raised by Solomon's own family only to betray them during the Nazi occupation. But has Solomon accused the right man?

Once We Were Brothers is Ronald H. Balson's compelling tale of two boys and a family who struggle to survive in war-torn Poland, and a young love that struggles to endure the unspeakable cruelty of the Holocaust. Two lives, two worlds, and sixty years converge in an explosive race to redemption that makes for a moving and powerful tale of love, survival, and ultimately the triumph of the human spirit.

Perfect title!. The book has profound messages for living a great life. It’s filled with one liners that put important ideals on the written page. Very appropriate for our time .

Incredible historical fiction. I was in tears reading the ending. What an amazing story. It touches on many subjects...the will of people to have good triumph over evil, belief in God, and of course, love. This book should be read by all. I plan to turn from always reading non-fiction to historical fiction.

Riveting. Outstanding story line and very well written. Spellbinding read.

Excellent!. I'm an avid reader & this book captivated my attention from beginning to end. The story is so well written that one becomes emotionally involved. 5 stars for sure!

Forgettable. Overrated. The characters are thin. The subject matter is full of history on matters of the Holocaust you should have learned by the time you left high school. If you like a book completely absent of depth with nothing but dialogue then this is your book.

In awe!. A masterpiece! Couldn't put it down!

Once we were brothers. Great book!

Once We WERE Brothers. Excellent book..

Once we were brothers. I was oh so sorry to finish this novel. I felt the loss of good friends. Your writing kept me spellbound.

Once we were brothers.. wonderful book. I could not put it down

Once We Were Brothers. Wonderful book, I couldn't put it down. Well researched and beautifully written.

Once we were brothers. Great book. 5 stars

Once We Were Brothers. This book is one of the best books I ever read. I could not wait to pick it up again, and although I loved the ending, I was sorry to see it end. I was savoring every last word!

wow!. Incredibly well written; I couldn't put it down until I finished it.

Best Book I have ever read. This was by far the best book I have ever read. I could not put it down. I read this entire book in 3 days and that is with pacing myself so it would last longer. Every chapter drew you in more and made you want to continue to see what happens next.

Once We Were Brothers. Great character development. We care about them throughout.

We Were Brothers. Gripping and heartbreaking. A study of moral and immoral life changing decisions.

Hardly suspenseful yet totally riveting. I wasn’t sure what this book was going to be like, but I’d heard it described as mystery/suspense. I disagree. The storyline was pretty predictable. Nonetheless, I was spellbound from the first page to the last. I was invested in the characters from the beginning. Bottom line for me...Great fiction based on a deadly and horrifying time in world history.

Meh.. Research was okay. But book needs one more revision. Plot was predictable. Characterization especially was weak, predictable tinged with bathos. Given the subject matter and time frame - characters might have been much more nuanced.

Once we were brothers. The book was so good I could not put it down. I read it twice that's how much I loved it.

Once We Were Brothers. An engaging and heartfelt story about survival during the Holocaust and the need for justice afterwards. I recommend anyone to read this story as a reminder of what must never occur again n the history of mankind.

AMAZING!!!!. I have read many books in the past thirty years about this subject matter. However, this Drew me in so completely, and I grew to love the characters as if they were my friends. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Disappointing. For such a powerful subject, it was astounding how not one of these characters managed to evoke any kind of reaction. There were plot points that seemed so unrealistic as to border on ridiculous; specifically, the Jewish protagonist moving freely about after German occupation. As for Otto, well, I wasn't convinced he was so evil, either. Yes, he stole money and valuables but he did help the Solomons at great risk to himself, which for some bizarre reason gets underplayed and dismissed by the author. A little exploration of his character might have been nice. Instead, he's a cartoon Nazi. Heck, most of the characters were cartoons and caricatures, right down to the evil, powerful law firm and the corrupt judge. Even the descriptions of the ghettos and the camps were bland. Perhaps I'm spoiled by those that came before and did it better. Poland during occupation? Try Leon Uris' classic Mila 18. Want to see a German on trial? Uris again, with QB VII.

Once We Were Brothers. This is a moving book about how the need for self preservation can undermine integrity and character. With World War II and the Holocaust as a backdrop, a Jewish family and their adopted son are subjected to pressures and decisions that test the boundaries of human emotion and physical suffering. A bitter irony is that the adopted son eventually separates from his family to become part of the Nazi regime and it's atrocities. Fueled by the undying lifelong love for his family, a surviving family member seeks to bring his adopted brother, who figured prominently in his family's destruction during the war, to justice. To complicate matters, in the modern postwar era his once adopted brother has become a well known, highly successful and admired businessman and philanthropist. This is a story of the persistence of an aging Holocaust survivor and his legal advocate, a headstrong attorney who values what's right over what's politically correct in the corporate legal world. Excellent read.

Couldn’t stop readin. Great novel that addresses loyalty, betrayal, sacrifices, and more. Interesting characters throughout. So happy to recommend it.

It can take you places.. Great book, after a while you feel like the characters are real and feel bad fore what happens to them. The end needed a bit more work but still highly recommended.

Once We Were Brothers. I read this in a few days. I couldn't put it down. Best book I've read in a long time. Haunting!

Great!. Loved this book. Touched my heart. Definitely one of the best books I've read.

Wow - addictive read. I always love a book that takes me into the story and I feel like I just lived through the Holocaust I can only hope for more. Thanks to the Author

Heartbreaking journey seeking justice.. Spellbinding story. Historically informative.

Wonderful historical fiction. This book, although somewhat predictable, was a wonderful read. The story line was compelling and well researched. I felt true compassion for the main character, Ben, who lived through so much during WWII.

Once we were brothers. I couldn't wait to start reading every night and sink deeper into the characters. They stayed under my skin during the day and made me appreciate the immense strength of the human spirit. Reading through the memories of the character made me feel like he was an old friend, I was actually sad when I read the last page, what an excellent story teller Ben Solomon was.

Great!. Great...read in one day! Never put it down!
