Vier-BEE ist eine utopische Stadt. Eine Kuppelstadt, in der man lange lebt und wo man Körper, Geschlecht und Rasse nach Belieben wechselt.
Alles ist erlaubt, nur eines nicht: das Töten.
Der Erzähler – später: die Erzählerin - besucht oft den Turm der Geschichte und liest Bücher über vergangene Zeiten. Überraschenderweise ist er nicht der Einzige, der dies tut, denn als er mit einer seiner Freundinnen zusammenzieht, wird er von einem Rivalen zu einem altmodischen Duell bei Morgengrauen herausgefordert.
Der Erzähler tötet den Rivalen im Duell – eine ungeheuerliche Tat für den Rat der Stadt, die ihn nach einer chaotischen Gerichtsverhandlung, bei der auch der Getötete in seinem neuem Körper als Zeuge auftritt, in die lebensfeindliche Wüste außerhalb der Kuppelstadt verbannt. Er bekommt als Starthilfe einen neuen Körper (und entscheidet sich für einen weiblichen), Lebensmittel und Hilfsroboter.
Nun richtet sich die Erzählerin also in ihrem neuen Wüstenhaus ein.
Was sie nicht weiß, ist, dass sich um ihr Leben schnell eine Legende bildet und immer mehr „Auswanderer“ zu ihr stoßen, die vom Leben gelangweilt sind.
Der Rat der Stadt erkennt die Gefahr, die von der kleinen Kolonie in der Wüste ausgeht, und beschließt, etwas dagegen zu unternehmen...
