Alors qu'elle vient tout juste d'avoir dix-huit ans, Alexandrina Victoria devient reine de Grande-Bretagne et d'Irlande. Dès lors, la jeune souveraine surprend tout le monde : elle abandonne son prénom détesté pour adopter celui de Victoria, insiste pour avoir ses propres appartements et est déterminée à rencontrer ses ministres seul à seul.
