Bis in die zweite Hälfte des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts waren die großen Flüsse Apure, Payara, Arauea und Meta in Europa kaum dem Namen nach bekannt, ja weniger als in den vorhergehenden Jahrhunderten, als der tapfere Felipe de Urre und die Eroberer von Tocuyo durch die Llanos zogen, um jenseits des Apure die große Stadt des Dorado und das reiche Land Omaguas, das Tombuctu des neuen Continents, aufzusuchen. So kühne Züge waren nur in voller Kriegsrüstung auszuführen. Auch wurden die Waffen, die nur die neuen Ansiedler schützen sollten, beständig wider die unglücklichen Eingeborenen gekehrt. Als diesen Zeiten der Gewaltthätigkeit und der allgemeinen Noth friedlichere Zeiten folgten, machten sich zwei mächtige indianische Volksstämme, die Cabres und die Caraiben vom Orinoco, zu Herren des Landes, welches die Conquistadoren jetzt nicht mehr verheerten.
