Excellent educational tool. The T in LBGT is well represented here. A woman who knew she was born in the wrong body and took steps to correct it. Not a man who led a false life, lying to himself just to make others happy. I say “educational tool” because there are those who are willfully ignorant of trans people and they need to be slapped with this book of truth. There are also those who know of trans people, but don’t fully acknowledge their struggles beyond prostitution. And Janet made it in life with only a minimum of prostitution, and only for surgery. Everything else she has earned has been with her brain and degrees.

Inspirational. A must read for everyone! The is a beautiful depiction of honesty in the face of adversity. Bravo Janet! As a queer person exploring my own gender identity for the first time, this showed me that no matter what I find it was within me all the time. I am grateful for this book and cannot wait to read your next addition.

Phenomenol journey, powerful voice. Beautifully written, a sound reminder of the heart's most cherished gifts...tenderness, vulnerability and strength.

Eye opening story a journey from A different perspective!. What I loved about the book was Janet sharping her experiences and not holding back. As a older transgendered female who as Janet said is finally putting down the mask to become myself. It’s powerful to read a real life experience and as a woman of color I can relate to many of Janet’s experiences as this book hits home on a lot of things I experienced. While I’m late to the party (the book was released in 2014) it’s still provides a powerful message. One I share with my trans students who carry a similar burden. I look forward to reading Janet’s other book!!!

Couldn’t put it down. Through her own story, Janet is telling the story of many who have taken the journey to wholeness. This book is the culmination of introspection, but is not grandiose or self-serving in its delivery. It is intimate and informative. As Janet’s eyes open to the world, as she experiences abuse and isolation, as she moves into womanhood, you are at her side. Sometimes with your eyes closed, sometimes holding your breath. Janet makes a large contribution to what it means as individuals to own our lives and our stories by courageously sharing her triumphs as well as the burden of decisions she made to survive. Her brutally honest and tenderly soft portrayal of the people (my fave Wendi) and events that shaped her provide a lens in which the reader can learn to frame their own story and find direction towards their own sense of wholeness.

Definite Must. This is a book of education and acknowledgement of transfolk, particulary for those of color who largely go unrepresented. The life of the author could have been easier with better education of the public at large making it easier for all who's struggle doesn't go along with mainstream society. This book will go along to help that end, especially if also read by people who don't a person who is transgender.

Informative, Inspiring and Challenging. Redefining Realness challenged every notion I had of trans women and gave me insight into a world that I know little about.

Interesting Read All. I found this book to be very informative and entertaining at the same time! Janet Mock's account of her life is nothing short of a feature length movie. Don't get confused by the subject of the book! Although it almost speaks directly to trans-youth, it also reveals the hurt and abuse that heterosexual cis men and women sometime cause on purpose or accidentally through ignorance. Janet provides each and everyone of us with the tools we need to live together as a human race and not be divided by "isms"!

Love. Beautiful and thank you for sharing your vulnerability and just being all around awesome <3

Lessons in Self Determination and Courage. Janet’s story "Redefining Realness" removes the shame from an all too common story for many trans women of color. Janet intimately recounts moments from her life, her words vividly painting a picture of an unbridled spirit being forged through trauma and adversity. So many times throughout the book I paused to hug the book, to hug this young woman for being so strong and so brave. I am not someone who cries, but reading Janet’s story broke me open as a wave of affirmation and forgiveness, of healing and liberation washed over me. I am a grown trans woman who has lived identifying as female for over 14 years, and I have never had a more catharticly empowering experience as reading Redefining Realness. I loved the book so much that I had my organization purchase 15 copies so that I can facilitate a book club for trans women of color to read and discuss. My hope is that as many trans women as possible will find motivation to redefine realness in their own lives and find their own path to womanhood, Identity, Love, and so much more.

Thoughtful, inspiring, powerful... Janet Mock's RedefiningRealness is EVERYTHING!. I first learned of Janet Mock via Twitter and was immediately drawn to her ability to discuss incredibly complex and personal issues with ease and elegance. If you are equally in awe of Janet's tweets... just wait until you read her book! From gender to race, sexual orientation to sex, and identity to disclosure; Janet shares thoughts on a myriad of topics as we follow along her personal journey to womanhood. As a cisgender queer male, I found myself both relating to aspects of Janet's journey and questioning my own assumptions about others experiences. But most importantly, to me, was how Redefining Realness has inspired me to be more authentic. Thank you, Janet, for sharing your stories and your strength. You are an inspiration for us all.

Best book ever.. Janet Mock is the most beautiful person ever. She speaks to me on so many levels.

Incredible!!. Janet's story revitalizes strength, femininity, and the power of identity. I could not put it down, and leave it feeling changed. So thankful to have read!

You will see yourself in Janet’s story. This book was unbelievably eye opening and inspiring. I’m a cis woman of color, and I wanted to read this book to learn more about the trans experience, something I don’t have any personal experience with. Janet’s story reveals so many parallels not just to my own experience as a woman of color, but to the experiences of people from ALL different backgrounds: anyone who has been bullied or teased for being different; anyone who has been physically or verbally abused; anyone who has felt abandoned, alone, or rejected; anyone who grew up around addicts; and the list could go on. I don’t think I ever laughed while I was reading this book, but I cried, got angry, felt inspired, and learned and highlighted a TON. Janet is an incredible writer and storyteller, and I’m so glad that she found the courage to share her story with the world.
