This ending isn't a typical Hollywood happy ending. I was amazed to find that some people complained how the plot wasn't resolved completely. On the surface level that's true and Tsukuru has yet to hear his girlfriend's answer but he has come to a resolve on a personal level and that is the conclusion that matters. If you want a traditional plot don't read Murakami. I thought the book was great and actually more "realistic" or devoid of spiritual elements compared to books like the windup bird chronicle, which I actually liked.

Great book. Murakami’s writing is different to most. So don’t expect to get anything you have in books in the past. I personally adore his writing and the magic realism stories he tells and how he tells them. This was one of the first books I read by him. It’s been years and I still think of it sometimes. It’s a great read, but I can’t say it’s for everyone.

Worst Murakami to date. Although I have been a fan of Murakami for years, this book was a disappointment. Boring plot, zero drama, terrible and wooden dialogue. This book should be called, "A book written about the most boring guy in Japan." I hope Murakami doesn't phone in any more novels like this one.

Murakami never disappoints. Such a good read and short too! I just wish the ending gave more closure I was so curious to know how it ended and it was very open ended

Nostalgic love story. My favourite Murakami writings are non-fiction or fiction rooted in realism. I haven't read all his fictions but this new book reminded me of Norwegian Wood especially the mood. When I think about Norwegian Wood, I get this nostalgic feeling inside me and this new book did the same. Having lived in a small town in Arizona for the past 15years but spent my youth in Tokyo, it made me think about a few friends I made in junior high and their whereabouts. If you're looking for the surreal world Murakami creates in many of his stories, this might not be the one for you but for someone who likes reality as it is, it's a pleasurable one to get lost in it.

Not typical Murakami. This book is very different from any of his earlier books. I have read them all! Here he seems to have pared down the plot and focus to an almost haiku like simplicity. The emotional echo of one mans inner life however speaks to all humanity's search for purpose and belonging.

Promising Start, Disappointing Finish. I have not read any of Murakami’s works in the past, but seeing as this was #1 on the NYTimes Bestseller list, I thought I would download the sample and give it a try. While the opening chapter was interesting enough that I ended up purchasing the whole book, the plot started to unravel rather quickly the more I read which lead me to inevitably regret the purchase. Without spoiling too much, the gist of the story is one man’s journey to find the answer as to why his four closest friends cut off all relations with him during their college years. While the premise is intriguing, the author’s resolutions for many of the story’s questions seem unbelievable and almost flat out ridiculous. The ending left me with more questions than answers making the whole story feel incomplete. For the most part many of the characters are very unlikeable and the ones that seem to be genuine are sadly underdeveloped. I don’t know about the author’s other works, but I wish someone had told me how graphic and erotic this novel was! There was some parts where I thought I was reading from an adult magazine. I know sex attracts readers, but this was largely unnecessary and flat out weird… Definitely if I had to do it all over again, I would not purchase this book. Very disappointed.

Good read. A very introspective look at the life of a person with abandonment and intimacy issues. His journey to overcome that and the journey he went through to get there.

Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years Of Pilgrimage. Murakami can make any subject fascinating. His descriptions of characters and what they are thinking and feeling is remarkable.

The ending has no imagination. The plot and story are good but the suspense leads to a boring / uninteresting end.

There is no ending. After taking the time to read this somewhat interesting 'mystery' we find a very dissatisfying ending...or more a lack of an ending. We find out nothing of the fate of the main character or the others around him. Often it is best at the end of a story to say 'and they lived happily ever after' and let it go at that after the plot has been satisfied (why ruin a good ending, right?), but you never even reach that point with this book...there is no ending...and we don't even know enough to imagine one. A complete and utter failure of a book. And I even delayed starting the latest escapades of Jack Reacher to finish this disatisfier! Arghh!

Full of colors!. I was given time to reflect, & the author intentionally makes you feel like you're living someone else's life with every passing page. At least I learned a thing or two about trains!

South of the Border was my favorite of all Murakami's books, but this latest one , Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki , has so much resonance it goes to the top of my Murakami list. Favorite short story is The Iceman. I tried to pace myself and read this in 4 parts. I was enjoying it so much I really didn't want it to end.

Where is the great writing?. Some of the reviews I read said how great the writing was in this book. Maybe the writing is great in Japanese. The word choice is often awkward and the metaphors are odd. And, sorry if this is a spoiler, the last chapter is missing. I gave it two stars as the plot is kind of interesting and I liked several of the characters

Goes downhill........ The first 50 pages held my interest, but it soon became excruciatingly dull. Ended on a flat note, and for this reader, at least, the reaction was "who cares?"

A must read book. Loved it... Murakami never fails to impress the readers with his story telling techniques.

Quoteable.. One to relish the genius of the authors words on love and life. A sequel has to be forthcoming.
