Southern Spirits by Angie Fox Book Summary

From NY Times Bestselling Author, Angie Fox, the first book in the USA TODAY bestselling Southern Ghost Hunter series

5 Stars! “Southern charm, a haunting mystery, and a leading lady I want as my BFF!”

One simple mistake…

When out of work graphic designer Verity Long accidentally traps a ghost on her property, she’s saddled with more than a supernatural sidekick—she gains the ability see spirits. It leads to an offer she can’t refuse from the town’s bad boy, who also happens to be the brother of her ex and the last man she should ever partner with.

Ellis Wydell is in possession of a stunning historic property haunted by some of Sugarland Tennessee’s finest former citizens. Only some of them are growing restless—and destructive. He hires Verity to put an end to the disturbances. But soon, Verity learns there’s more to the mysterious estate than floating specters, secret passageways, and hidden rooms.

There’s a modern day mystery afoot, one that hinges on a decades-old murder. Verity isn't above questioning the living, or the dead. But can she discover the truth before the killer finds her?

Southern Spirits. Poor Verity! Her home is about to be foreclosed on, a ghost is bothering her, her ex is a bum, and she has a pet skunk! Now her ex's brother wants her to remove ghosts from his new business. It is a wonderful mystery with much fun!

I loved this book. I just finished reading this book “Southern Spirits.” Just three words. “I Loved It” I have fallen in love with the Urban Fantasy genre. This story is about “Verity Long” who is somewhat down on her luck, but doesn’t let it get her down. She discovers an ugly “vase” that is full of “dirt” that gets dumped out and her adventure starts from there. It grabs you from the beginning and keeps you going. This is a light easy read. I could not put it down. I am so waiting for the next books. Also check out her other books. I first discovered this author from her Demon Slayer series.

T. Too jumpy

Entertaining. I downloaded this book for free and was thrilled to find an author who writes so well. The characters are engaging and the plot fun. Well done.

3.5 Stars - a solid cozy mystery. I’m not sure why I put off reading The Haunted Heist for so long. I guess I just wasn’t in the mood for a cozy mystery? Regardless, I felt guilty staring at it in my NetGalley queue, so I bit the bullet and started reading. This is the third in a series and I haven’t read any of the previous books. Unfortunately for me, that meant the first chapter was full if info dumping to catch me up on what I missed in books 1 and 2. I read 99% of this book via text-to-speech (aka, listening to a semi-robotic voice read to me while I did other things, like exercise or fold laundry). Text-to-speech is great for multitasking, but I know I missed some things along the way, but it didn’t hurt the story for me. I like the main character, Verity Long. She doesn’t want to have the ghost of an old mobster hanging around, but she’s stuck with him. (I’d have to go read the first books to find out exactly why, see the paragraph above!) The ghost, Frankie, was a blast. Seriously, his questionable morals and zero filter made the book. This story revolves around Verity trying to get a job doing marketing work for the bank, but instead she finds herself at a crime scene. Sounds like this is something that happens to her fairly regularly. I loved the subplot with sexy cop Ellis—and his overbearing mother who hates her. Apparently, Verity was supposed to marry Ellis’s brother, but she left him. It sounds like their Facebook relationship status should be ‘It’s Complicated’ because it is. But they’re soooon cute together! So, basically, after a rocky start, I enjoyed this story full of southern charm and ghosts. I was never completely hooked, but as I said above, I just haven’t been in the mood for a cozy mystery, so I think that detracted from some of the enjoyment for this book. If you’re into cozy mysteries, go pick up this series. It’s a cute, quick read, and book one is currently FREE at the time of this review posting.

Funny and entertaining start to a new series. I was excited to read a new series from an author I have followed throughout her other series. I enjoyed the strong female lead character and the humor with which she stumbled through her adventures. Although it is not the type of book I normally enjoy, I tend to read more romance novels and a lot less mystery, I still enjoyed the way the book introduced and engages the characters.

Fun Mix of Mystery and Romance. This was such a cute story! It was mix of cozy mystery and paranormal romance - so I'll be interested to see if the romance comes up in the rest of the series as well. The two genres were combined beautifully and readers of both will love this story. Southern girl Verity Long has found herself on the wrong end of her small town's opinion - even though she isn't really the one at fault. It turns out her next best friend is actually a ghost - well, she's in for a lot more than she ever expected. When she sets off on a ghost hunt - not for her ghostly friend, but with his help, she finds out there might still be a shot at love at there for her as well. Verity was a great character. I loved how she rolled with the punches and somehow managed to take all things in a stride - just like any southern lady - she invites it in and asks if it would like some tea. Nothing ever seems to completely phase her - at least on the outside. Ellis Wyatt is the last person she expects to be spending time with, but she quickly discovers that he's nothing like she expected. This was very close to a sweet romance, with just enough heat to really appeal to the romance reader. There's lots of lovey moments that are just enhanced by the spooky elements from the mystery. The mystery is a great one as well with a very unexpected villain. The down side was that there was really no way for the reader to predict the bad guy. There's no real evidence until the very last second. But the chase was still a lot of fun. I hope the next books in the series can pull everything together as beautifully as this book - I loved it. *This book was received in exchange for an honest review*

Southern Spirits. *** A review copy of Southern Spirits was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.*** This is such a fun entertaininag story in true Angie Fox fashion. For those of you who love her Demon Slayer series give Southern Spirits a try you certainly won't be disappointed. The characters drew me in from the very beginning. The heroine Verity is a spunky southern gal whose life has been turned upside down by her ex after leaving him at the alter. She is on the verge of loosing everything and then gets some help from a couple of unexpected sources - Frankie the German, a 1920's gangster ghost that Verity unwittingly binds to her ancestral home and Ellis Wydell the hunky black sheep brother of the very ex she jilted. Take that mixture add in Lucy the skunk, angry ghosts and a murder mystery and just sit back and watch the fireworks. Southern Spirits was pure entertainment and I really hated to see it end. I cannot wait for the next installment to see what kind of trouble Verity can get herself into. Just love Lucy the skunk

Southern Spirits. This is a great read. I stayed up reading it far too long than I should have but I have no regrets. It’s a fun read and you’ll be glad you read it!

Southern Spirits. I love this character! The writing is straight forward. No flowery descriptions that take up paragraphs ( that I always skip over). Laughed out loud a few times. Scary too, throughout the book. I look forward to the next one. Thank you.

A laugh out loud tale of love, desperation, and ingenuity !. I have been an Angie Fox fan for a long time. She always seems to have a unique point of view on every day situations. Her latest creation is no different. "Southern Spirits", the first book in the new series "The Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries", kept me entertained from the first page. I read the book in one sitting because I just could not put it down. I want to tell you all about it because I enjoyed it so much but I also want you to discover for yourself what a great book it is. The main character, Verily is trying to find a way to keep her grandmother's house from being sold to pay off some debts. Verily has a way of getting herself into some interesting unconventional circumstances. Along the way she makes some new friends, solves a decades old cold case, and quite possibly finds the man of her dreams. If this is the first time reading one of Angie Fox's books, you have picked a great book to start with, and then you can read her back list while waiting for the second in the series. And if you are already a fan of Angie Fox's writing you will not be disappointed. I wasn't myself and now I can't wait until book 2 is out. I hope you enjoy "Southern Spirits" as much as I did.

Wonderful. I liked how she was able to find justice for the ghost.

Loved the book. Well written, light hearted read. Just what I needed to relax and laugh after running after my kids all day.

Southern Spirits by Angie Fox. Southern Spirits by Angie Fox Ghosts, a pet skunk, a gorgeous brother of the ex, and the determination of a southern girl make this light mystery a fun read. First in a new series. Verity Long dumped her ex-finance but now has to sell everything she owns to pay for the reception she didn't attend. Including her ancestral home. All she has left is an ugly green vase with questionable carvings that didn't sell. Verity dumps the dirt from the vase into the rose bush and cleans the vase. Yep. You know where this is going. Not a genie but a ghost. A Southern Gang mobster ghost. Frankie, the ghost helps Verity see other ghosts in the area and helps to solve an old murder. Excerpt: He stuck with me all the way down the path. "It's good to hear you're done with your walk. A girl shouldn't be strolling alone after midnight." We neared my Cadillac. "Oh, look," he added, "you brought your car. Most pedestrians don't think of that." Verity got caught in a lie in this excerpt, but I wanted to show the occasional humor in the writing. I received a copy of this book from the author.

Awesome New Series!. This book was so much fun. It is loaded with interesting characters that make up a fun, and charming world. It was a blast from start to finish and I totally enjoyed it. Favorite Quote that pretty much sums up how it all starts ““Listen, Doll,” Frankie said his tone softening a hair. “When your great-uncle so-and-so dies, there’s a reason you scatter his ashes. You scatter,” he said making a motion like he was feeding birds or something. “You let them catch the wind. You give the spirit freedom if he wants it.” His voice grew tight. “You don’t dump them all in one spot then stomp on ‘em.”” Verity is a down on her luck graphic designer from Sugarland Tennessee who gets in a little over her head when she leaves her ex-fiancé Beau Wydell at the altar. Beau happens to be the most eligible bachelor in three counties, and from a very prominent Sugarland family. After being sued by Mrs. Leland Herworth Wydell III for every dime she has left to pay for scandal that was supposed to be their wedding Verity owes more than $20,000. While cleaning out her house to get the money she inadvertently lets loose the ghost of Beau’s uncle a 1920’s gangster named Frankie, and grounds him to her ancestral home. Saddled with a ghost, and no money in the hopes of keeping her house Verity takes a job for her ex’s brother black sheep Ellis Wydell. She is charged with the job of cleaning out a violent spirit from the restaurant that Ellis happens to be remodeling. Many hijinks ensue during the book which culminates in Ellis and Verity being embroiled in a decades old murder mystery. Will they solve they be able to solve mystery, and move the ghost on before the murder catches them! I totally recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Mrs. Fox’s work, and who also likes cozy mysteries of a ghostly nature. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series. *I received this book from the Author in return for my honest review. I received no other money, or goodie bag just the book so that I could form an opinion. That in no way changes my opinions of this book.*

Southern Spirits. Unusual ghost story. Loved Lucy.

Southern Spirits by Angie Fox. I like detective books with a lot of humor. This series looks like it’s going to be a joy to read. Love the main characters and her pet choice of a skunk. Though the author should show the dangers of raising a wild animal just in case her readers want to raise a skunk.I started reading this series backward. I read her Christmas one and realized I bought the first 2 . This is a very enjoyable series. But I’m on a fixed budget so it will be a while till I can buy a couple of more but look forward to them.

Angie Fox has done it again. LOVED this book!!! Angie Fox has an amazing ability to introduce you to her characters and make them part of your life. You never want the book to end. Southern Spirits is well thought out, well written and leaves you wanting more. It has a unique story line and wonderful characters. Even if it is “not your kind of book” there is something about the writing that makes you want to read more. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants a good fun read.

Easy fun read. I downloaded this book as something to pass the time, and needed up really enjoying it. A few ghost, a little action and a possible romance. Can’t wait to read the next to see what’s in store for this southern Bella

Southern Spirits. Pure fun ghostly mystery with a surprise twist to “Who done it.”

Excellent. I was very impressed with this book. After the first encounter, I thought, where do we go from here. This story was beyond my expectations! Her style of writing moves the story along. The descriptions of the houses, ghostly images and characters are very good. And a little romance too. I hope her other books are as good. Read it!

Southern spirits. This is a sweet ghost story. I just wish there was a way to buy a book set of the series at once.

Surprised me. ►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►► Note: I was given an advance copy of this from the author in exchange for a honest review. ►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►►   Southern Spirits, Book #1 of the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries by Angie Fox I want to go on record saying ... I don't like mysteries. And I'll be the first to admit, I was wrong. I found myself not wanting to put the book down. The book had a nice flow that kept my interest. The characters were likeable with a snarky ghost (or two) and a skunk. I agree with Verity, there should be Skunk Chow. For those readers who complain about too many (or much) sex scenes in books. Here's the book for you. Other than a kiss or two, there is none ... so enjoy. In all honesty, the sex scenes weren't needed, in this story... to put them in would've stuck out like a sore thumb. I'm glad Ms. Fox decided to forego them. Without them, you got to get to know the characters better, not to mention got more of an actual story. Now don't know if I'm not used to mysteries, but I didn't see it beforehand who was the crazy psychopath. It wasn't who I was expecting. Can't wait to see where the series goes from here, got a feeling it's going to be fun!

Southern spirits-An unexpected gem. Angie Fox is a new author to me. I downloaded a free e-book and discovered an author to follow. I love when that happens!! Good story with quirky humor and relatable characters, in body and in spirit :). Moments of suspense, humor and actual LOL’s. Although I didn’t actually pay for this book I would say it’s worth payment. It was certainly worth my time which is not something I can say about 50% of the free books I download in search of a good “new-to-me” author. (No offense meant to new authors, it’s just that Angie Fox is a seasoned author who offered a free book to showcase her obviously well-honed craft.) If you’re looking for a book to take you to that place where you can imagine and envision I’d recommend “Southern Spirits”.

Fun cozy mystery. I read this in a day. Enjoyable, fun book with a witty main character. 4.7/5⭐️

Good read. Enjoyed this lighthearted story. Ghosts, mystery and a little romance all tied up in a cute bow. Good read.

Surprised to say…. I didn’t see it coming. Not my usual genre, but I’m so impressed, I’m buying next in series.

Just no. Had read it before and tried to start again, nothing to recommend for me.

Delightful Ghost Story. This is the first time I have read a book by this author but it won't be the last! I am OCD when it comes to grammar errors and there was not one! You would have to be OCD like me to understand how disruptive it is to try reading a novel with grammar errors.

Perfection. It's the middle of November, and of the 44 novels I've read this year, Angie Fox's are my absolute favorites. I'm so thankful I discovered her. This book gives all the feels from laugh-out-loud funny to nail-biting-nervousness. It's the kind of book that haunts you until you can finish it. Dinner can wait. The laundry can wait. Verity's story must be read immediately. I highly recommend this book!!!

Wonderful read!. *** A review copy of Southern Spirits was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.*** The characters drew me in from the very beginning. The heroine Verity is a spunky, hilarious girl whose life has been turned upside down by lying cheating ex. She is on the verge of losing everything and then gets some help from a couple of unexpected sources - Frankie, a 1920's gangster ghost that Verity unwittingly binds to her ancestral home and Ellis, the hunky black sheep brother of the very ex she jilted. Hilarity, a mystery, danger, and sparks all make for a great read that I couldn't put down! Southern Spirits was a fantastic start to a new series and I am already anxiously awaiting the next one!

Southern Spirits. Amazing! I couldn’t put it down and even got in trouble for reading at work. This book pulls you in and keeps you guessing. I never would have guessed who the bad guy is either! Well done 🥰

Cute. This was a very adorable funny paranormal book! Had a fun time reading it! LOOOOVED her pet that’s a skunk, made me giggle every time she was brought up in the story!!!

I need more stars!!. This book was filled with so much adventure! The characters and storyline do NOT disappoint!

Great read!. Fun, well paced and interesting. One of the better books I've read lately.

Awesome!!!. Loved it!! Listened to the audiobook and was glad it wasn't one of those really short ones! Looking forward to more by this author.

Southern Spirits. Wonderful book

It was fun. It was fun and quick read.

Southern spirits. It keeps you reading

Southern Spirits. Fell in love with Verty, her skunk & her ghost. Adorable book. Very enjoyable read.

Angie Fox’s Southern Spirits. Come along and meet Lucy, the de-scented pet skunk and Frankie the German, a gangster spirit with live with Verity Long in the House she inherited from her grandmother. But due to an unfortunate incident she is about to lose the house unless she can come up with an obscene amount of money. She has sold all the furniture in the house except the futon to sleep on. And a odd vase.... or so she thinks until Verity decides to clean the dust out. She discovers it was an old urn so now not only does she have her own ghostly sidekick but is able to see other spirits as well. In order to get the money to keep the house, she teams up with the Ellis Wydell. Ellis owns a historic property haunted by some of Sugarland, Tennessee’s historic figures, the property once housed the Southern Spirits brewery & distillery. Ellis hires Verity to help with the paranormal entities. The characters are all well written both the small town human ones and the ghostly ones. Besides solving the paranormal problem, a missing girls body is recovered and the covered up murder of a law enforcement officer uncovered. It as a humorous, fast paced paranormal read. Looking forward to reading the next in series book.

Fun summer read. Very light and easy

Good afternoon read. Thanks

Must read. Great series!!!!

Southern Spirits. Loved this! Can’t wait to read all!

Wholesome and fun. This is definitely a cozy book. It’s quaint in the way that the Sookie Stackhouse novels are with a more young adult feel. I loved this book and can’t wait to read more!

Excellent. Enjoyed the book. Fun read with eccentric characters. Worth taking the time by a nice window and an afternoon go by.

Great new series from Angie Fox!. What a fun new series from Angie Fox! I'm always drawn into this author's engaging storylines, but it's her skill at character development that puts her books among my favorite. Though writing in a paranormal genre (in this story: a quirky, independent, good little southern girl discovers she can see and communicate with ghosts), Fox's frank, laugh-out-loud writing style nicely sets the stage for a relatable tale that had me caught up, once again. With a possible romance brewing, and just the right amount of southern girl grit, I can't wait for the next installment. Now, who do I see about getting a pet skunk?

What a great story. This was such a ride! It had everything, action, adventure, mystery, murder, ghost, a little romance, and a HOT cop. I couldn’t stop reading. I absolutely loved this book. Sooooo looking forward to rest of the series.

Great fast read. Enjoyed the plot. Not predictable - which is a real winner for me. Nice balance of excitement suspense and drama with just a dash of romance. I love the fact that it's not dripping in the romance department.

Loved it!. Great read, loved the characters & story!

Brilliant. Well written. Great series

Loved it. Would recommend this book to anyone. Some drama, laughs and romance, it's got it all. Enjoyed it immensely.

Southern Spirits. I really enjoyed reading this book. I almost deleted it without reading. I decided to start and see how it went. I had a difficult time putting it down. I really enjoyed the characters. Hope in future books that Verity and Ellis get together.

Addicting. I have read this entire series of sugar land festivities several times and it never gets old! There’s mystery, some romance and a whole lot of humor!

Awesome. This was an absolutely enjoyable story. The characters were lovable. I couldn’t read fast enough to find out the end. Suspense and humour to make you want more. JackieT

Excellent!. Southern Spirits is the first book in a new series by Angie Fox, and it is an excellent story! It is at times funny, sad, spooky, downright scary, thrilling, action-packed, hilarious, and intriguing. There is a mystery to solve, which will keep you interested until you turn the last page. There is a budding relationship, which will have you rooting for the heroine. There are misunderstandings and complications and resolutions and questions and it will keep you guessing and then leave you wanting more. If you enjoy a mystery with a ghost or two you will want to read Southern Spirits.

Southern Spirits.. Dear Ms. Fox. Well done. Excellent. I loved your book. I loved vex your characters and style of writing. It’s the first time that I’ve read any of your books and I am now a big fan. Can’t wait to read Skeletons in the Closet. Thank you. Catherine M.
