A Body in the Village Hall by Dee MacDonald Book Summary

Kate Palmer is more than ready for the quiet life in Lower Tinworthy, Cornwall. But within weeks of her arrival, a woman is found dead in the village hall, stabbed to death with her own kitchen knife… The victim is Fenella Barker Jones: chairwoman of the Women’s Institute, doyenne of the amateur dramatic society, and reigning champion of the WI cake-baking contest. But whilst she may have been at the centre of village life, there were plenty who had reason to dislike her – as Kate is about to find out. As a practice nurse and one of the first on the scene, Kate can’t help but get drawn into the investigation. Her patients are only too eager to tell her about the victim’s extra-curricular activities and, the more Kate hears about Fenella, the more the list of suspects grows: it seems half the village wanted her dead. Kate’s sister Angie tells her to leave it alone, but Kate can’t resist piecing together the clues. Especially not if brings her closer to the handsome Detective Inspector ‘Woody’ Forrest, who is near to retiring himself and determined to crack his last case. But when someone breaks into Kate’s home and leaves a warning note on her pillow, it becomes clear the murderer is prepared to do anything to keep their identity hidden… Will Kate and Woody work out who’s responsible, before she becomes the next victim? If you love murder mysteries by Agatha Christie, Faith Martin or Joy Ellis, then this page-turning novel will have you reading late into the night!

Quick, enjoyable read!. This is really one of those rare “new” mystery books that really does take the reader back to the likes of Agatha Christie! Seems every time a new character was developed the reader thinks well maybe this is the culprit, only to have the next viable character appear! I love reading books that provide enough depth to genuinely hold my interest. This is definitely one of the “top shelf” reads. But don’t take my word for it, download your free copy and you’ll be hooked. Just a warning…

Drinking problem?. Liked the story, the setting, the cast of characters and suspects. What I didn’t like was the main character constantly harping about her sister’s drinking problem. I get her frustration but it was just brought up too many times. It didn’t add anything to the story and actually was an unwelcome distraction. It was featured so much that I kept thinking that perhaps it figured in somewhere with helping solve the crime somehow? Nope. Makes one wonder what the author was thinking.

I’m going back. I don’t want

History will never get a good night out. Is not going back in the house I will be sure you to go back and then I have a Twitter right

A Must Read. Excellent thriller! All the twist and turns kept me immersed until the end!

British cozy mystery. Kate recently moved to Cornwall with her sister. She gets caught up investigating a murder and is being stalked by the killer. Will she figure out who it is before she ends up on the killer's list? A British cozy mystery.

Good story. Foolish heroine.. I love cozy mysteries, but why do they have to make the heroines make foolish decisions? With the killer of two people on the loose, Kate takes it on herself to interview all the people she thinks could be suspects. For a nurse, that’s irresponsible and dangerous. I really resent authors who make their female characters so stupid.

Still in page 95 and can’t wait to finish it. I think your book inspired me to read more of your book 👌🤯

A body in the village hall. Really a great book , thank you!

OK book. Nice book decent, good, and very interesting

Guys we can get together and have. Guy that was in a car and I have to work at work and then work at a time when he is done work at the house so we will get a

Witty Cozy Mystery Story.. A very witty cozy mystery book. It had all the twist & turns that made you w ant to keep reading it. I loved the characters and the story ending. Definitely one to add to your must read list.

Nothing to get excited about. I wish authors would read their dialogue aloud and listen to it, then perhaps the reader wouldn’t get a headache from rolling their eyes so much. There were also unexplained holes in the story, like why wasn’t the doctor’s car on the CC feed around the grocery store? If you bring it up, you need to fill it in, otherwise it is untidy. Little things like that make this a pass.

A Body in the Village Hall. When long-divorced Kate Palmer, a middle aged nurse and her older, widowed alcoholic sister move into Lavender Cottage in a small English village, murder is the last thing they expect. But ever-curious Kate is one of the first people on the scene and starts investigating on her own, putting her sister and herself in danger. A blossoming romance between Kate and the village detective, the village secrets Kate uncovers in her search for the murderer and believable, funny dialogue between the sisters make this a fun, entertaining read. It’s refreshing to read a novel that features interesting, mature characters who have weathered loss and disappointment but continue to carry on and find the best life has to offer. I’ll be reading more of Dee MacDonald’s books!

A Body in the Village Hall. Some interesting side stories around the mystery.

We can go in tomorrow for sure if that’s good. I’m not going back to the office to see what the plan was

Nice and easy to read. I just loved her other books. This one was a bit different, it wasn’t funny or tense or sad... just a very easy read. No nightmares, no lying awake wondering what happens next. It was interesting. She described the village so one can easily see it. Her characters were what you would expect in village life. Made me want to live in a small town. Glad I read it.

A Body in the Village Hall. A well written detective story with lots of twists and turns well done to the Author thank you 🙏🌹🥰

Ignore the naysayers this is a fun read.. I really enjoyed this. It’s a cosy mystery so it’s not heavy on CSI level science. Another reviewer found some of the “nursing” inaccurate. None of that bothered me, it’s fun, lightweight and a who dunnit where I didn’t know who it was until the end.

A body in the village hall. A really great read. So much going on I didn’t want to put it down

Fabulous novel. Really enjoyed this book. It was witty, romantic and a great who done it

At 99p it’s ok. Not very convincing

A body in the village hall. Was such a good little read, very twisty but was a really good book.

Therapy made me squirm. A comfortable easy read for brain dead bed times with idyllic settings. Let down by therapy scenes. Unfortunately, every time the protagonist Kate Palmer had a therapy scene it felt awkward and uncomfortable. I would never want to be approached in the way Kate approaches characters in the narrative. For me, it was a poor representation of mental health and I hope this is a misunderstanding on the author Dee Macdonald’s part, rather than any prejudice or malice. In my opinion, I feel as though the narrative would have been vastly improved with additional research on therapy. Regrettable as the rest of the story was reasonable enough for a light read. It was not gripping enough to overcome the awkward scenes, however.
