Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen Book Summary

A New York Times bestseller

A TIME Magazine Top 10 Children's Book of 2015

"Saint Anything is a poignant, honest story about how we might suffer the misfortune of someone else's bad choices, how people who love us can become family when we desperately need it, and how starting over might - miraculously - mean taking a solid leap forward." —Jodi Picoult, New York Times bestselling novelist of Leaving Time and My Sister’s Keeper

Sydney has always felt invisible. She's grown accustomed to her brother, Peyton, being the focus of the family’s attention and, lately, concern. Peyton is handsome and charismatic, but seems bent on self-destruction. Now, after a drunk-driving accident that crippled a boy, Peyton’s serving some serious jail time, and Sydney is on her own, questioning her place in the family and the world.

Then she meets the Chatham family. Drawn into their warm, chaotic circle, Sydney experiences unquestioning acceptance for the first time. There’s effervescent Layla, who constantly falls for the wrong guy, Rosie, who’s had her own fall from grace, and Mrs. Chatham, who even though ailing is the heart of the family. But it’s with older brother Mac—quiet, watchful, and protective—that Sydney finally feels seen, really seen, at last.

Saint Anything is Sarah Dessen’s deepest and most psychologically probing novel yet, telling an engrossing story of a girl discovering friendship, love, and herself.

👍🏼👌🏼👏🏼. This book was really good and relatable. I loved how the Sydney was realistic and had some flaws bc I just hate when the main character is completely perfect. It’s annoying!!! But let’s be honest, it was kind of slow at first, so that’s why I only put four stars. But I loved how the story was created and the ending awesome!! :)

LOVE. i loved this book, i love all sarah dessen books actually but this book was just great. truly.

Bringing Real Stories to Life. Sarah Dessen's characters are flawlessly crafted to be likable, despite their quirks and history. I found myself drawn into this story of a young girl who struggles to be seen amongst her family, but dodging judgment and guilt from her community. Her brother, Peyton, made mistakes and is paying for them in prison, but Sydney could not get rid of her own guilt-by-association. This is a fabulously real story of a girl's experience with loss, shame, dysfunction, and finally acceptance. I didn't want the story to end, though Dessen ended it perfectly.

Great like always. another great book by this author! quick, simple, well written

Captivating. This book was pretty different from others that Dessen has written; yes there is the classic love story of the innocent girl falling in love with the (usually older) boy, but the sense of friendship, family, and shat it truly means to belong, makes this a very powerful and emotional story. The focus of the book being on Sydney's troubled brother and her relationship with her parents and the rest of the world around her makes this an excellent read. Highly recommended!

LOVED IT!. Sarah Dessen has done it again. I've been reading her books since I was 16 and she never disappoints! I couldn't put this book down. It was real and raw and showed the true struggles that every day families can go through.

Loved it!. Classic Sara Dessen but I loved it so much!

Amazing!!. Great book! Couldn't stop reading!

Mind numbing my boring. Let me start out by saying Sarah dessen has been one of my top favorite authors for years! But this book was painful to read, nothing ever actually happens that wasn’t completely predictable and the character has no real personality. I would recommend any of her other books especially this lullaby! She’s a wonderful author just please save yourself the time, I tried to finish the book and eventually gave it up

Love. I have loved this book since I first read it. It’s one of those books I keep going back to when I just need to read something!

Tiny Panda. FANTASTIC!!! LOVE THIS BOOK AND EVERYONE SHOULD READ IT!!!

FABULOUS!!!!. It was amazing I couldn't put it down. It felt like I was in the story! I love Sarah Dessen

A long arduous journey that was slow. In Saint Anything, the story was character driven. The story focused on two families that had family issues. It was these issues that brought forth change. With change their was self discovery. Change was a monumental element in this book as each character was given attention in the area of change. Sarah went overboard with illustrating the changes in all these characters. Because this story was character driven Sarah took the time to showcase each and every character in the book by creating separate stories about each and how they were affected by issues. The process was tiresome to read. Towards the end it became a chore to read. Saint Anything had complexity while exposing the various ways characters change. The family issues were common issues handled differently. The self-discovery at growing and learning was slow. The story had a lot of information to process. The biggest factor in this book to consider was that all families have issues yet the way some families handle those issues separate themselves from other families. The component that stuck out most was Sydney feeling invisible in the same room as her brother. This transferred into her everyday life. In all this mess was a great message but the delivery was slow and muddled with too many everyday issues. This wasn’t my favorite Sarah Dessen book. I felt no connection to anyone of these characters. I kept waiting for something pivotal to take place. The way the story concluded was disappointing, it felt like a cliffhanger.

Dont listen to the negative reviews. I saw some negative reviews and I was hesitant to buy this book but knowing me, every time a book has negative reviews I end up being in love with it despite them. so I read it anyway. And of course I was not disappointed. Sarah Dessen delivers again. Amazing book. So amazing I read it in a day. Highly recommend.

❤️. I haven't read this book...YET...but I know it's going to be amazing because Sarah is an AMAZING author and her books are perfection. Team Dessen all the way!!

Loved loved loved!. This book was amazing! I am a huge Sarah Dessen fan and Saint Anything does not disappoint! The characters are so great i wish there was a sequel!

Forever one of my favorite novels ❤️. Hands down, one of my favorite books I've ever read. I keep comparing each new book I read to this one.

I related a lot to this book. Everything the main character did had me saying: "OMG just like me" It was a good read. *spoiler here* I liked how the writer compared what happened to Peyton (the crash) With Sydney's life and how two lives are clashing but in a different way.

:). I was a bit hesitant to read her new book, as a lot of them center around the plot of girl meets boy and so on. This one however shocked me. It was one of the greatest books I have read in a while. The way he deals with the guilt of what her brother did and the way she tried to get her parents to understand she was not her brother was amazing. The romance mixed in was great because it had the right amount of build in it. It didn't just start with her meeting THE one. Overall, my favorite of her books and would read again.

Good!. As perusal Sarah Dessen's novels captivate me and cause me to reflect more. The characters were real and likeable (well for the most part). Defiantly worth reading if you enjoy her novels

Recommend strongly. This book was one of the best I have read in a while. Read!!

Stunning!. Sarah Dessen’s inspiration for Saint Anything are “invisible girls” and I don’t think there’s a book that better represents this. I felt it was an emotionally gripping, superb portrayal of the experience so many people have felt or continue to feel. It also extends to the things that make us visible, in ways we don’t want as well as those invisible beasts clawing at us daily. When I finished this book, I wanted to re-read it – but without knowing how it ended – so that I could relive this book constantly. If someone invents such a device, Saint Anything will be the first book I try it out on. The main character, Sydney has always felt invisible and not only could I see myself in her, I could see the experiences of others in her as well. Dessen creates this flexible character, one who doesn’t just appeal to one type of reader, but several. Additionally, there are certain moments when Sydney and her mother are at conflict with one another and the after effects had me feeling very frustrated for Sydney [in terms of unfairness etc.]. I can say without any doubt, Sydney is a very real, very three-dimensional character to me. Saint Anything is also about perspective, in that “grass is greener” type of way. Other characters have invisible fears of their own and the way they view others, compared to how Sydney see’s things, is very surprising for her. This is definitely a moment of character development. For example, we have Mac Chatham who provides a curious dynamic because he see’s Sydney – she thinks for the first time – and some fears of his own are revealed. Dessen has created a cast of characters embodying different types of invisible fears, and it’s with Sydney that this cast is able to grow astronomically (even Sydney herself). The plot revolves around Sydney’s older brother, Peyton and how he’s always been the limelight of her family, particularly their mother. Peyton is currently serving time for a drunk-driving accident, one that caused someone to become permanently paralyzed, and Sydney is left with this huge guilt on her shoulders, feeling as if she’s the only one of her family to carry this burden. The plot is engaging, there’s nothing monotonous about Dessen’s storytelling. It’s with the author’s storytelling skill that a concept like “invisible girls” can be told so well. The more I read, the more I was drawn into the novel. And of course, the ending has that sense of conflict resolution; Saint Anything is entirely captivating! There was one thing that bothered me. In chapter one, we’re introduced to Sydney, her father, mother, brother Peyton and Ames, a friend of Peyton’s. The scene starts with the reading of the jury’s verdict for Peyton’s trial. Ames is first mentioned on page 2, and I found his introduction to be confusing. Unlike the other above mentioned characters, it’s not made clear who he is to Sydney and her family [this is revealed mid-chapter 2]. I actually went back to page 1, thinking I’d missed something. A similar thing could have happened with Peyton, but Dessen uses a flashback to confirm that “brother” and “Peyton” are the same person. I feel this confusion could have been avoided by using a similar technique. As a final point, Dessen’s writing is stunning, but this fine portrayal of invisibility is what truly stands out to me. This is an important read not only because of the various issues explored in the plot, but how the characters express them. Saint Anything is composed of a very relatable cast for the young adult audience. In my opinion, this is a near mirror image of what the reader might have, is or could experience and to see yourself in the characters is a feat. For this, I give Saint Anything five stars.

Saint Anything. This novel, like Sarah Dessen's previous books, is well written for the demographic; however, this novel is different, she took her writing to a new depth. The amount of raw emotion in this novel was hard not to feel and it was evident that Dessen wanted to give an inside view on a prominent problem like drunk driving - what lead to it in this case, the impact, the aftermath on the perpetrator's family and so on. She did a great job fleshing out the main character and the people in her life. An overall excellent read that I couldn't put down.
