The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher Book Summary

Jim Butcher, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Dresden Files and the Codex Alera novels, conjures up a new series set in a fantastic world of noble families, steam-powered technology, and magic-wielding warriors...

Since time immemorial, the Spires have sheltered humanity. Within their halls, the ruling aristocratic houses develop scientific marvels, foster trade alliances, and maintain fleets of airships to keep the peace.

Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship Predator. Loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy’s shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels. But when the Predator is damaged in combat, Grimm joins a team of Albion agents on a vital mission in exchange for fully restoring his ship.

And as Grimm undertakes this task, he learns that the conflict between the Spires is merely a premonition of things to come. Humanity’s ancient enemy, silent for more than ten thousand years, has begun to stir once more. And death will follow in its wake...

Fantastic!. Beautiful world building, immersive action, and a loveable cast, this book is by far Butcher’s masterpiece and will forever go down as one of my best reads. From magical ether crystals, to warship combat among the clouds, this story has me enthralled in every word. I demand for a second, and third book, if that’s what it takes to relive this world once again!

The Cinder Spires. His best book to date. This was truly an enjoyable read.

Great book for fantasy and cat lovers. Not his best work but worth the read

Disappointing. I'm normally a huge fan of Jim Butcher (I binge-read through the first 8 Dresden books in a week), but this was not good. Slow-moving story, very little character development, and for a book that is supposed to be a cross between steampunk and high fantasy, it felt oddly juvenile.

Great book. I look forward to reading more of this series it looks to be just as good as the other stories told by Butcher

That good.. Mr. Butcher is an excellent writer. His books are well plotted and his writing descriptive. What elevate his stories are characters that matter. He combines humanity with magic and that makes this series that good. The other benefit to a Jim Butcher series is that he shows respect for his audience by publishing volumes quickly.

Very good. You have to be impressed with the worlds that Jim Butcher is able to create. He is truly a master of his art. Well done sir

Jim Butcher Does It Again. I have read the entire Dresden series, and the entire Furies of Calderon series. As I finished the last book in each series, I wanted more. Every single book was outstanding. Now Jim Butcher has come out with a new world, a new cast of characters and a new threat to humanity. I can't wait to see what else has been up his sleeve. His work never fails to please.

Just OK. On the whole, slighty unsatisfying — which is a shock because I usually love Jim Butcher. The last 100 pages or so are very good, but the rest, a little underwhelming. I didn’t have a clear picture of the world he was trying to build, and many of the main characters were less than fleshed out. Perhaps one or two (or three) less young, naive heroes, and more focus on the very promising character of Captain Grimm (whom I liked very much) would have made more of an impact?

Mr Butcher, has done it again.. Mr. Butcher, has once again written of world so fantastical, yet so believable, that suspension of disbelief is almost unneeded. This book falls into the the Steam/Magic punk classification but is an exemplar, of how it can easily morph into high fantasy, almost to the point of being literature of the type college professors will be teaching about for years to come. English Lit has J.R.R, American Lit has Jim Butcher!

Butcher at his best. The cinder series proves to be Mr. Butcher's best yet. Why? Because his depth of characters have you feeling for them, his accurate ability to show different sides of people, and make them multifaceted, is about unparalleled. 750 pages, but once you get past the first 150 it's fast pace. Yes, he is my favorite author, but his style has grown and flourished, lots of action, and dang if you don't feel like you walked a mile in all of the characters shoes. Even the cat! Yes. The cat

Amazeballs. Love this series. As a big Butcher fan this new world is fantastic for anyone to start on.

Entertaining and unique. Overall, this is a good book. If you like his other series then definitely read this. However, certain characters just annoyed me. I felt like there were contradictions between how Butcher wanted them to be (based on descriptions provided by others) and what they actually did and said. Too much telling, not enough showing. Basically, the story and plot were good, the characters left something to be desired.

Horatio Hornblower in Airships. This is an interesting take on naval fiction. Lots of politics set in something very like an age of sail novel. Told from the view of desperately earnest characters dedicated to Albion. It also has talking cats, steam engines, airships, and kung-fu monks. I don't know exactly the list of things Mr. Butcher drew to make this series, but the list of subjects in his hat is impressive.

Butcher Delivers. I cut my teeth on Doc Savage and Tarzan and Conan—genre adventure with a riveting plot and ceaseless action. I went back after 40 years and found those books vapid and unsatisfying. I doubt that will happen with Butcher’s new series, the Cinder Spires. Holy crap is this one fast book. Just action on top of action, with juicy, beautifully written descriptions of steampunky airships, and characters any adventure novelist would give their right eye for. I suspect every studio in Holywood will beat a path to his door now because this book is a movie waiting to happen. 40 years from now, I suspect I’ll come back to this book and love it just as much.

Oh Wow! At the Top of his Game!. Jim Butcher is at the top of his game in this gravity-defying, new-world creating, action-packed with heart-felt characters, scary villains and creepy beasts. Perfect for Halloween. It's the Christmas gift for my reader friends this year. You will love it: just read it!

Well done! Eagerly awaiting the next book!. Jim has the genre, the pace, and the dialogue down pat. Always a joy to read. Looking forward to many more years of enjoyment.

Cinder Spires: The Aeronaut's Windlass. Great story, lots of action, interesting characters, fully realized lands. Thoroughly enjoyable, looking forward to Book 2

Very interesting!. Entertaining, unique, and very good characters

A glimpse of a beautiful new world. Jim Butcher has succeeded in adapting his trademark style to a much more deep and dark universe than anything he has written before. The cast of characters easily dwarfs any of Butcher's previous works, developing three or four entirely separate casts from different corners of this world to be brought together by the events of the novel. Yet the variety of personalities on display does not suffer at all from the number, and almost all are unforgettable throughout the book. This book seems to me to touch on much darker themes than the rest of his worlds. Histories of strained relations between races are touched upon, the death toll in this one book most likely matches the entirety of any of his other series so far, and it deals unflinchingly with the perspectives of youth thrown headlong into war, and the mind of a captain of a warship protecting his crew even as continued events shave down their numbers. But also he has lain threads that he will surely unravel in future books. Such as: (non-story spoilers next paragraph) What happened to the surface? Who exactly built the Spires? What causes the iron rot that so effectively destroys many technologies that we take for granted in our history? How many other Spires are there, and what lies between them? Final verdict: a very good read, and an amazingly strong start and good foundation to what will undoubtedly be a must read series from Butcher.

Good start to a new Series. This is an entertaining start to a new series. The world building is good, the characters are enjoyable to read about and the action is all fun. While Butcher will not make you consider new concepts or break new ground with his story, he will give you a rocking good time that makes you smile and want to keep reading. Honestly, many times that is exactly what I am looking for. In short, read it, enjoy this for exactly what this is. A ton of fun and good read.

A fully realized beginning to an exciting new series. Fans of Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series will find The Cinder Spires an easy book to become lost in. It's a masterful display of character development, world building, and action/adventure. Fans of Harry Dresden may have a little difficulty stepping outside the first person urban fantasy genre. However, Jim Butcher proves once again that a good storyteller will shine no matter what the write. The Aeronaut's Windlass is multi-POV, third-person, set in an imaginative world with Victorian sensibilities, airships, aliens, and magic. It's a sensory delight fully realized, epic in its telling.

Sad. Butcher has jumped the shark tank. It was a good run while it lasted.

Fantastic new series. I have to admit: I didn't know what to expect from this series. It's a new one by Jim Butcher- not Harry Dresden, and not remotely in the same 'world'. Instead, set in another time- Nuevo steam punk with hints of magic and flying ships and... Cats. Amazingly awesome Cats. In short: the best Butcher book I've read, and my only regret was how quickly it ended. Highest recommendation.

Aeronautics windless. A great read. Simply devoured the book. Another winning series from Jim Butcher
