The Anti-Cool Girl by Rosie Waterland Book Summary

Brutal, brave, hilarious -- a full-frontal memoir about surviving the very worst that life can throw at you.

Rosie Waterland has never been cool. Growing up in housing commission, Rosie was cursed with a near perfect, beautiful older sister who dressed like Mariah Carey on a Best & Less budget while Rosie was still struggling with various toilet mishaps. She soon realised that she was the Doug Pitt to her sister's Brad, and that cool was not going to be her currency in this life.

But that was only one of the problems Rosie faced. With two addicts for parents, she grew up amidst rehab stays, AA meetings, overdoses, narrow escapes from drug dealers and a merry-go-round of dodgy boyfriends in her mother's life. Rosie watched as her dad passed out/was arrested/vomited, and had to talk her mum out of killing herself.

As an adult, trying to come to grips with her less than conventional childhood, Rosie navigated her way through eating disorders, nude acting roles, mental health issues and awkward Tinder dates. Then she had an epiphany: to stop pretending to be who she wasn't and embrace her true self  -- a girl who loved drinking wine in her underpants on Sunday nights -- and become an Anti-Cool Girl.

An irrepressible, blackly comic memoir, Rosie Waterland's story is a clarion call for Anti-Cool Girls everywhere.

'Individual, wounded, brilliant and hilarious' Sydney Morning Herald

'If Augusten Burroughs and Lena Dunham abandoned their child in an Australian housing estate, she'd write this heartbreaking, hilarious book.  It made me laugh uproariously, then feel terrible for her, then laugh all over again. Sorry, Rosie.'   Dominic Knight, The Chaser

'Hilarious, wise, gutsy, clear-eyed, devastating and uplifting.  It's a marvel.' Richard Glover

The Anti Cool Girl was shortlisted for the 2016 Indie Book Awards and for the 2016 ABIA Awards for Biography of the Year, and in addition was the Winner of the 2016 ABIA Awards People's Choice for the Matt Richell Award for New Writer of the Year

Incredible writing. Never stop writing Rosie. One of the greatest books I have ever read. Your honesty is a breath of fresh air and you have a way of connecting with all readers

Fantastic read!. First page deep I did not put the book down. I managed to read the book within 2 days. From sheer shock to laughing on the train at peek hour. I can truthfully say you nailed this book! A lot of people can relate to these situations which bought a personalised touch and hit home. Will definitely be recommended this book to all my friends.

An Amazing Book. This book is amazing! Can't believe I didn't read it sooner! Rosie writes an at times scary, depressing and sickening 'tale' in a way that is impossible to put down!

Amazing !!. Rosie! What an amazing read! This book is defiantly worth reading, it is hilarious, raw, brutally honest and one of, if not, the best book I have ever read!

Brave and funny. The average person would not be able to make light of such tough circumstances, let alone make those jokes hilarious. So glad I discovered this extraordinary writer.

You will cry until you laugh and laugh until you cry!. Beautiful and honest x

Sad & hilarious. I giggled & cried my way through this book. An inspiration to us all.

A good book. It's alright. I can understand why people love it, however for some reason I am just not feeling it and I don't know why. This is a subjective response though. Structurally and objectively it's a great book to read!

We should be friends. Rosie you are amazing and I admire you so much! People that make me laugh are my favourite kind of people...and your one of them Rosie! Can't wait to read your next book...

Wonderfully written. I hadn't read any of Rosie's blogs before this. So everything was new. Amazing story full of warmth and love. Hope to read more of her writing in the future.

Brilliant. Amazing book. So touchingly honest. You are truly a role model for all those who grew up in bad situations. Tragic. Witty. Brilliant.

The best!!. I laughed and cried- so much! Have never been more emotionally attached to a book while in my own blanket fort :) ❤️

An Amazing Read!!!. I thoroughly loved this book! I was sad in parts, and laughed out loud a lot! Bravo Rosie on rising from rough beginnings and embracing yourself! Now hurry up and author another book - you are brilliant!!!

Couldn't put it down!. What a brilliantly written, honest, and hilarious account of some truly horrendous and often unbelievable experiences! Much respect for Rosie and her amazing life.

Sensationally brilliant, unbelievably sad. My heart broke reading parts of this then l'd turn the next page and bursting out laughing. Insanely witty and brutally honest I haven't been able to put it down. Rosie you are incredible and I'm so proud of who you are and how you've survived everything you've overcome. Can we be best friends already!?

Raw, honest & heart wrenching. This book is a revelation; I am so glad that I picked it up... and then couldn't put it down. Rosie's honesty is refreshing and her success despite extreme adversity is uplifting. Her writing is such that I was there with her every step of the way. I want to personally find out what school she went to and demand answers for her. I want to go and smack her foster dad creep across the face. Most of all, I want to give her a big hug and tell her that young girls should idolise people like her, not those in glossy magazines. I don't think she is anti cool, I think she is the new cool!

Honest and engaging. Page turner, inspirational to secret memoir dreamers who think a flawed life couldn't be marketable on the page. So honest. Made me want to read whenever I could. Xx

Way too depressing. I really feel sorry for everything what happened to this girl but this book is just way to depressing and actually makes her sound like she is not a nice person.

Beautiful!. Couldn't put this down! Totally beautiful, brilliant and brave.

Gripping stuff. Highly recommended. You'll laugh and cry.

Brilliant. I couldn't put this book down, it is so honest and refreshing.

Cover to cover. For someone who doesn't read all that often I was surprised that I read this book in one sitting. In parts throughout I found myself actually lolling. I have created a mental log of page numbers to refer back to when I'm in need of a good laugh (pg. 168 is at the top of my list). Such an honest, brave and clever book. Well done Rosie you beautiful woman (can't wait for the next one!) xx

The best laughs and tears for zonks. Rosie, you are my wonderland, my throat hurts from laughing and crying in the best possible way... You’ve made me feel better about my own freaky self, thank you.

Yes. This. All of this.. I couldn't put this book down. I read it on the train to and from work. I'm pretty sure people thought I was a little crazy laughing hysterically and balling my eyes out, sometimes in the same train ride. I grew up in Sydney. Rosie- I also have the urge to cause pain to Northshore private school goers. Especially those who turn up the collars their hot pink pink Ralph Lauren polo shirts. Thanks for putting in words that it's ok not to be cool. I'm not cool. Never have been, never will be. And that's absolutely fine with me.

Read in a day. Couldn't put it down. Amazing. Read in a day. Couldn't put it down. Amazing

Did not put this book down! One of BEST things I've ever read!. I have spent my day completely enthralled in reading this amazing book! #theanticoolgirl It's safe to say I came out equally traumatised and inspired.. Less than 24 hours ago I bought this book and I have achieved very little else since but I would definitely recommend to all! This woman is truly a role model, and I'm convinced you are my spirit animal Rosie! <3

Brilliant. I absolutely love the raw honesty of Rosie writing about her life. I loved reading this book from start to finish.

Awesome!. Great book, couldn't put it down!

The anti cool girl. Rosie Waterland what an interesting life you have had at only 28 you have been through so much, I loved every minute of this book, I laughed and cried, mamamia is lucky to have a talent like you.

Amazing!. An amazing, sometimes sad, sometimes hilarious journey to self acceptance! If you haven't yet read this book, I urge you too. The writer takes you on a journey of her life and her quest for self acceptance. Would be a great book for any teenage girls feeling like they don't belong!

Couldn't put it down. Amazingly written book that I couldn't put down and read in one day!

Funny, honest brilliant- just like Rosie. Once I started I could not stop reading, I laughed, I cried and I emphasised so much. Rosie is brilliantly honest, funny and loveable. Best book I've read in ages !!!

Couldn't put it down. Read it in two days.

WOWWWWW what a read. I dont read very many books as i lose interest VERY quickly. I have not finished a book in over 10 years!! The Anti Cool girl had me totally captivated, i finished it in a day. I didnt want it to end. I was laughing my head off one minute and crying my eyes out the next. Such a beautiful but heartbreaking story. Rosie you are amazing, so strong and so talented. You will love this book!!

Best book ever. Couldn't put this down so down to earth and relatable highly recommend 😀

Amazing, hilarious, profound. I downloaded this book because I had read some of Rosie's recaps of the bachelor after stumbling across them on Facebook. It was the best $13.99 I'd ever spent. It's honest, hilarious and incredibly blunt. I couldn't put it down. Her section on how she was bullied was like a page out of my own book. It's almost like she has no filter but in the best possible way. She doesn't censor her thoughts or sugar coat them which is why this was so refreshing. Highly recommend this book to anyone.

Rosie.. Amazing. There were honestly times when I was so horrified I wanted to put the book down but I couldn't. Such a frank and open writing style makes this book undeniably real. I related to a whole lot of points made here and it helped me to reflect on current, past and future times in my life. Thank you!

The anti cool girl. I loved this book, I couldn’t stop reading it. Rosie is so right, we don’t have to conform to others expectations, we are enough.

I feel like we’re spirit animals.. Rosie! this book is amazing. I ended up pulling an all nighter reading this book (I couldnt put it down) and managed to make it through the next day at work. I could relate with you in alot of ways, especially the dream of being the worlds gratest actress- i spent many hours as a kid practising my acceptance speech and daydreaming of the hollywood life, and begging my mum on the daily to get me onto neighbours and home and away. Some parts that should be serious are hillariously written, and kind of make you feel bad for laughing. this is the best book i have read in a very long time. i cant wait for the next one.

Very entertaining. I loved this book. It was interesting, funny and relatable.

Brilliant. Read in under 24 hours I absorbed every word and i really related to your story and admired the honesty.

Enlightening, humorous, tragic.. A look at real life for those who don't grow up in the White bread world. Worth reading

Amazing book.. I couldn't put this down. Rosie's honesty is just breathtaking, and her frank acceptance and witty take on a pretty awful string of events she has survived is awe inspiring. Rosie's honestly around her mental health struggles is a breath of fresh air. Read this book.
