21 Lessons for the 21st Century by Yuval Noah Harari Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In Sapiens, he explored our past. In Homo Deus, he looked to our future. Now, one of the most innovative thinkers on the planet turns to the present to make sense of today’s most pressing issues.

“Fascinating . . . a crucial global conversation about how to take on the problems of the twenty-first century.”—Bill Gates, The New York Times Book Review

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY FINANCIAL TIMES AND PAMELA PAUL, KQED

How do computers and robots change the meaning of being human? How do we deal with the epidemic of fake news? Are nations and religions still relevant? What should we teach our children?

Yuval Noah Harari’s 21 Lessons for the 21st Century is a probing and visionary investigation into today’s most urgent issues as we move into the uncharted territory of the future. As technology advances faster than our understanding of it, hacking becomes a tactic of war, and the world feels more polarized than ever, Harari addresses the challenge of navigating life in the face of constant and disorienting change and raises the important questions we need to ask ourselves in order to survive.

In twenty-one accessible chapters that are both provocative and profound, Harari builds on the ideas explored in his previous books, untangling political, technological, social, and existential issues and offering advice on how to prepare for a very different future from the world we now live in: How can we retain freedom of choice when Big Data is watching us? What will the future workforce look like, and how should we ready ourselves for it? How should we deal with the threat of terrorism? Why is liberal democracy in crisis?

Harari’s unique ability to make sense of where we have come from and where we are going has captured the imaginations of millions of readers. Here he invites us to consider values, meaning, and personal engagement in a world full of noise and uncertainty. When we are deluged with irrelevant information, clarity is power. Presenting complex contemporary challenges clearly and accessibly, 21 Lessons for the 21st Century is essential reading.

“If there were such a thing as a required instruction manual for politicians and thought leaders, Israeli historian Yuval Noah Harari’s 21 Lessons for the 21st Century would deserve serious consideration. In this collection of provocative essays, Harari . . . tackles a daunting array of issues, endeavoring to answer a persistent question: ‘What is happening in the world today, and what is the deep meaning of these events?’”—BookPage (top pick)

Human. Thought inducing. As you explore the author’s own fallible, biased, oversimplified, gloomy perspective, you end up challenging your own conceptions of reality ending with a glimpse into true self exploration.

The book that I will read again. Extremely relevant to our times, very focussed on the global issues of the century. This work provides an effective synthesis and simplified easy to comprehend analysis of some of the most perplexing topics of our time. A very enjoyable read. Yuval does it again with this wonderful addition.

Good book, lots of truth. Good book with a lot of truth in it.

Excellent. Great summary of life around us and what could be coming in years to come. Helps makes sense of the world. Very well written

Great book. Harari’s perspective is very intelligent and fascinating.

Reader. This author is always enlightening.

Deeply Satisfying. A truly provocative book. The author’s intellectual reach is displayed throughout with precision. This was a difficult read for me but ultimately a deeply satisfying one. The author does not gloss over the immense challenges facing this century on our planet both collectively and personally, yet he does so in a way that offers the reader reasons to be optimistic about the future as well. I would highly recommend ‘21 Lessons...’ to everyone who feels dissatisfied with the current human narrative and wants a deeper understanding of the experience.

21 Lessons for the 21st Century. This book is one of the worst books I’ve ever read! There’s so much contradictions in what the author is saying and so much of the information is based on is opinions. Although the author tried to sound neutral, it was very apparent which sides he favored more. Overall, I would not recommend this book to anyone who wants to keep or grow a positive mindset and attitude.

Fantastic Thinker. So many thought provoking concepts. If you wonder about what the future will be like, this book is a wonderful. For all the dreamers out there.

Loved the other books. If you enjoyed his other books, you’ll love this one.

Stories are not supposed to be literal.. Harari emphasizes that stories shape us, but all stories are false. Yes, stories of religions are myths, but these stories are limited human attempts to express the unfathomable. These are limited but not necessarily false. They may not convey something that is actually true and real, but reflects a deep truth and reality. Much of the book is based on this framework, which disappoints.

Interesting ideas but too many words. This book has interesting points but I do not like the authors writing style. It reads like an easy you write in college where there is a minimum word count requirement. I found myself getting annoyed while reading because the author could have easily express his ideas using less words.

Read last chapter and rest after. Mr. Harari gives different view point of understanding of Society and Life. For me it reminded my early life where we used to discuss about a Life, Karma and Meditation and others. How we choose life: Bhakti Marga, and Gyan Marga. I wish he had put more information about the Hindu philosophy. Probably a marketing point of view was not favorable. If a information is true even from a religion book should have been referenced.

Fantástico. El análisis pragmático del ser humano, la sociedad sus creencias y actitudes hace pensar realmente y objetivamente en mi ser

👍. Enjoyed this!

Phew. Let’s consider the book a journey ..a long journey. It starts out in the verdant lush forests with pristine creeks flowing giving off great energy. Then quickly you enter the desert with endless vistas that become weary and repetitive. You begin to sleepwalk just to get through. Finally a clump of grass, a spindly tree and before you once again the forest beckons. As your journey winds down you see clarity again and nourished and thankful to be out of the desert. This book try’s to be something it isn’t...a hundred pages at most with crisp editing would have been powerful and profound.

horrible, out of touch, waste of time. literally the worst book i have read in my entire life 🤡
