A striking and surprising debut novel from an exhilarating new voice, Such a Fun Age is a page-turning and big-hearted story about race and privilege, set around a young black babysitter, her well-intentioned employer, and a surprising connection that threatens to undo them both.

Alix Chamberlain is a woman who gets what she wants and has made a living, with her confidence-driven brand, showing other women how to do the same. So she is shocked when her babysitter, Emira Tucker, is confronted while watching the Chamberlains' toddler one night, walking the aisles of their local high-end supermarket. The store's security guard, seeing a young black woman out late with a white child, accuses Emira of kidnapping two-year-old Briar. A small crowd gathers, a bystander films everything, and Emira is furious and humiliated. Alix resolves to make things right.

But Emira herself is aimless, broke, and wary of Alix's desire to help. At twenty-five, she is about to lose her health insurance and has no idea what to do with her life. When the video of Emira unearths someone from Alix's past, both women find themselves on a crash course that will upend everything they think they know about themselves, and each other.

With empathy and piercing social commentary, Such a Fun Age explores the stickiness of transactional relationships, what it means to make someone "family," and the complicated reality of being a grown up. It is a searing debut for our times.

This has gotten me to the point of no return, the fact is that this book... IS THE WORST BOOK IVE EVER READ IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. The fact that we move so fast into it doesn’t let the reader sink in the emotions of the character, when I read a book I hope it gives me a bit of realistic reading to open a new page of imagery in my brain, this, this has just made me mad. I seriously do not understand as well why people read this book as well, this book has been trashed by a bad storyteller that rushed things up like a last minute school project which in this case has gotten a very bad grade in my book.

- Great Read!5 star

I stayed up late trying to finish reading this book. What a page turner, and it’s not even a mystery! It reminded me a bit of some of Liane Moriarty’s books, only not so... white. This book is well written, with clever wit and jokes that made LOL IRL. The characters were real, believable, and the narrative regarding the implications of race and socio-economic class in their shared experiences was well crafted. There is no way to say this without sounding like some basic white chick trying to be “woke” but as a person with little personal connection to black culture I want to understand others experiences better so that I can take a seat and let others speak. I agree with other comments that this novel is a great perspective on how ignorant and unaware people can be and a great commentary on how people interact in the world. We are all experiencing the world through completely different lenses. No spoilers but I found myself wishing at the end that Emira had been more vocal, but I don’t think it was wrong for the character for things to play out the way they did. I also just finished reading it like an hour ago so I may just need time to mull over it a bit. This is the second book I’ve read recently where a young female character has had a similar anti-climactic climax, I wonder what that says about the way women writers write women, or the way we think we should behave. Or maybe that’s a strength, because these are not the ways a male character would behave?

- Don’t know why I bought this1 star

Somehow the preview read of this book seemed good. But after that, I didn’t even recognize the story anymore. Not what I expected. Didn’t like the story or the characters. I stopped reading after a few chapters.

- Loved it5 star

I was really surprised that this book was so good! This book is a reminder to never assume and that people are rarely self ever self aware.

- Number one newest fan!5 star

This author is incredibly talented and her characters that are multi diverse and multi generational leave you breathless and spell bound. You fall in love with the protagonist and her rich and diverse personality and perspectives in which she sees the world and those around her. Beautifully written with just the right touch of humor and lightness when delving into sensitive and very current issues

- Could not put down.5 star

Just wow. What a fun captivating book that really tied it all together. I found myself wanting to not put this down and read it every second of my day, disappointed only when it ended. Character development and progression was captivating. Especially Amera and Alex. Made me think of when I was younger and things were less important. But really puts into perspective the different socio economic situations that people can be put into and how we as a society can be so ignorant and unaware sometimes.

- Has me thinking5 star

When a book has my evaluating my own perceptions, then I know it accomplished its goal. I think this an excellent read and will make a fine film. I do think the story got a bit messy half way thru but the ship righted it’s course. Looking forward to the Authors next book.
