The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

ONE OF BARACK OBAMA'S FAVORITE BOOKS OF THE YEAR

NAMED A BEST BOOK OF 2020 BY THE NEW YORK TIMES * THE WASHINGTON POST * NPR * PEOPLE * TIME MAGAZINE* VANITY FAIR * GLAMOUR

2021 WOMEN'S PRIZE FINALIST

“Bennett’s tone and style recalls James Baldwin and Jacqueline Woodson, but it’s especially reminiscent of Toni Morrison’s 1970 debut novel, The Bluest Eye.” —Kiley Reid, Wall Street Journal

“A story of absolute, universal timelessness …For any era, it's an accomplished, affecting novel. For this moment, it's piercing, subtly wending its way toward questions about who we are and who we want to be….” – Entertainment Weekly

From The New York Times-bestselling author of The Mothers, a stunning new novel about twin sisters, inseparable as children, who ultimately choose to live in two very different worlds, one black and one white.
The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, southern black community and running away at age sixteen, it's not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it's everything: their families, their communities, their racial identities. Many years later, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town she once tried to escape. The other secretly passes for white, and her white husband knows nothing of her past. Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined. What will happen to the next generation, when their own daughters' storylines intersect?

Weaving together multiple strands and generations of this family, from the Deep South to California, from the 1950s to the 1990s, Brit Bennett produces a story that is at once a riveting, emotional family story and a brilliant exploration of the American history of passing. Looking well beyond issues of race, The Vanishing Half considers the lasting influence of the past as it shapes a person's decisions, desires, and expectations, and explores some of the multiple reasons and realms in which people sometimes feel pulled to live as something other than their origins.

As with her New York Times-bestselling debut The Mothers, Brit Bennett offers an engrossing page-turner about family and relationships that is immersive and provocative, compassionate and wise.

Amazing. This was a beautifully written story,i enjoyed every page!

Awesome book. Amazing writing! I really enjoyed this story.

Excellent Book. One of my all time favorite reads.

Timely and incredible weiti. This book grabs you from the very beginning and it’s twists and turns hold you to the very end. The author’s writing is incredible, so poignant and deep. You will not regret reading this book, especially at this time in our country.

Disappointed with the ending. The ending was disappointing! It Felt rushed.

Aimless and Wandering….. I kept hoping the story would go somewhere but just like the characters in the book the story is aimlessly wandering through each of their separate lives. I’ll save you some time… everyone is either pretending to be someone else, wishing they were someone else or longing to be anywhere else other than where they are. And that never changes throughout the entire disjointed plot. There were many compelling story lines sprinkled throughout that kept me strung along to an abrupt and disappointing last page. “That’s it?” Yes, that was it.

Couldn’t put it down. A beautiful yet complicated story. I loved every confusing emotion it brought up.

Strong beginning; unbelievable second half. I got pulled in by the beginning. The writing was strong and the story was believable. Sadly, it all unraveled for me in the second half or so.

Perversion at its best. This book is perverted...seriously. Our world has enough problems without poisoning our minds further.

Read it in 5 days. Great book!! You won't regret it.

I want more. I wish the ending was a bit more detailed with more closure

Good read but expected a little more. The book touched on several storylines that were interesting and the author did a nice job of weaving back and forth. The ending felt rushed though and a bit anti-climatic. With as much build up as there was on the character development I would have liked to see a conclusion for all characters. Enjoyable read but left me wishing for more. Would make an interesting movie for sure.

The vanishing half. This book was amazing !

Smart. An emotionally intelligent book

Finished in one sitting. I finished reading this amazing book in one sitting. Or what felt like one sitting because I could not put it down. Been a while since a book had tugged at my heartstrings as much as this one did. Pain and love. I couldn’t believe I had reached the ending when I did. I can’t wait to reread this one day in the future.

Tough to get through. Interesting premise but slow. Couldn’t relate to the characters

Fast read. Page turner from beginning. Fast read.

Awesome. I couldn't put it down until I finished. It was deep, it really was. I would highly recommend this; you get so engrossed in the characters it's like you can actually see and hear them.

Pretty good read!. It was a very good book. Wonderfully written. Took off a star cause I expected a different ending but like I said it was still a good read. This book needs to be a movie, seriously.

Loved this book !. It took me 4 days to read this. I was literally glued to this book and I loved every page. The story makes me think how possible and dangerous of a life Stella lived.

I’m still waiting for my ending.. I really liked this book. I loved the character build up, the different character stories, and the timeline changes. But I kept waiting for the inevitable to happen, when it did, it lasted about a page then the book ended with nothing. No cliff hanger, no drama, no surprise , it had so much potential.

The Vanishing Half. Heart felt and complicated relationships.

Amazing read. This beautiful book reflected the history of my Creole family. I saw myself in both characters.

Incredible. Beautifully conveys the intricacies of colorism in the United States and it’s generational impact. So well written and engaging.

The vanishing half. Great book

Well told tale of race. Whiteness pervades this story of 2 separated sisters who choose different paths. The social implications are not touched, only hinted, and are left to the reader to contemplate. A very personal story.

Beautifully flawed characters. I had a couple devastating distractions in my life after I started this book. So glad I stayed the course and continued to read because it was exceptional. Several times I’d stop and reread some of the jewels of wisdom scattered throughout and marvel at the truth in these poetic commentaries. It was particularly meaningful for me since I’ve lived in both the Houston area and Los Angeles and spent a great deal of time in New Orleans. Slow to grab me in the beginning but I will not hesitate to recommend it to anyone, loved it. Poignant story about family, how it can hold you up or tear you down in an instant.

Great read. I was loving it but by chapter 8 I couldn’t stop reading had me wanting more

I Need More!!!. Brit’s writing is captivating — unique in its descriptions, character development, word choices, and gut-wrenching one liners. I dream of Mallard now and long to see the place she describes so well.

The vanishing half. Awful awful ending

Great book. It’s a great story, I loved Jude and Reese’s story. But all of the characters had an interesting story that was worth reading about.

The Vanishing Half. This was a great book, I loved the characters and the way the stories weaved around each other.

Emotional thriller. Excellent story. The characterization and suspense are incredible.

Really Good Read!. couldn’t put the book down. after reading through half the first day of reading, i had to force myself to put it down to slow done the destination to the final page haha.

AMAzing. Loved it

Great book!. Loved this book!

Love it. Beautiful story. It was just a bittersweet ending. Love the intersection and individuality of all the characters. I would’ve love to see the unavailing of all the secrets.

Beautifully Written!. This novel will be added to my list of TOP TEN favorites. It’s a story that will stay in my thoughts for years to come. I will be watching for more from this author.

A - F Scale: D. Drawn Out. Narrative: Repetitive. Uninteresting.

Good story line and character development, abrupt ending. I wanted this story to go on for another couple chapters. The ending was very sudden and did not leave closure to how any of the main characters lives turned out.

Great read, left me wanting more. The author did a spectacular job uniting different timelines, and separate storylines for characters. I was impressed by the skill of writing. It started slow and I can’t say I fell in love with it yet. About 700 pages in I couldn’t put it down. The character development is incredible, however I was disappointed by the ending. I can’t imagine another way to have tied up the story, and I think she made a strong point by not tying up the story the way us readers would’ve liked. But it still gave me post read grief.

Read it!. Fascinating story and beautifully drawn characters.

Loved every moment!. Couldn’t put the book down. This was a great read. You had to love every character.

Beautiful story. I loved the story. I couldn’t put the book down. Beautifully written.

Brilliant!. This was one of the best composition of literary mastery I’ve ever experienced!

Loved it. Beautiful story and vividly written

Great read. Great book, slow in the beginning but thoughtful and lovely once you get deeper into the story

Captivating. I don’t normally read books about social issues, but this book had me captivated. I enjoyed every page and I liked how she told the sane story between to storylines.

Nice one. I got this book for a very low price and had little expectations however, it was an interesting story

Beautifully flawless. Beautifully written, each chapter flows into the next. One of the best plots I’ve come across. Just love!

A thinker. Without being overly sensitive to racial discrimination, it simply told the story of perception while highlighting the nuances that we often take for granted. The safety in conformity, the risks in trying something new and the reassurance that we can change our narrative given the right motivation.

Good Book. great book, really enjoyed the multiple perspectives on the situation and felt that the book really transported me to the past

Great Read, Some Issues. Great atmosphere, great tone, great pacing, sympathetic mostly-likeable characters, great hook and mostly satisfying conclusion. I have two issues: one is that a character’s storyline—you’ll know who once you read it—feels a bit artificial and intrusive and serves really to make the person more interesting than he is, which is a disservice I felt to that community and cynically I wonder if it was done solely to get this book more press in woke circles. Two: the race issue seems to get forgotten somewhat by the end. I can’t really elaborate without spoiling but one of the big hooks doesn’t result in anything too drastic in the end, which surprised me a bit. Still, great read.
