Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper Book Summary

A New York Times bestseller for three years and counting!

“A gutsy, candid, and compelling story. It speaks volumes.” —School Library Journal (starred review)
“Unflinching and realistic.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

From award-winning author Sharon Draper comes a story that will forever change how we all look at anyone with a disability, perfect for fans of RJ Palacio’s Wonder.

Eleven-year-old Melody is not like most people. She can’t walk. She can’t talk. She can’t write. All because she has cerebral palsy. But she also has a photographic memory; she can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She’s the smartest kid in her whole school, but NO ONE knows it. Most people—her teachers, her doctors, her classmates—dismiss her as mentally challenged because she can’t tell them otherwise. But Melody refuses to be defined by her disability. And she’s determined to let everyone know it…somehow.

Empowering. This book is amazing! I loved it so much and itll forever impact my life. I told my bestie to read it, she did, and she loves it to! I love this book even though its super sad! (In a good way) 😭😭😚😚

Best book EVER.. This book is so amazing! The story line and the characters is just.... like words can’t explain how good this is other than 👍🏻🤩

Want to read again!. This book is so good, I want to read it again!

I Love It!. This book is awesome! I would totally recommend any day of the week!

Out of my minds. By all the reviews I looked at and my what my class mates have told me about the book I want to read it !!!!! By Emerson

I love this book. I read this in 4 th grade and then this year I just had to download it I have read it so many times I even convinced my friends to read it 10/10 would recommend

Amazing. I’ve never heard of this book but it is amazing. At first I thought that I would not like it but in the end I LOVE it!

Out of My Mind. This book was well written and very heartfelt. Moving.

Would recommend. I was seeing everything she was going through it felt different. Every book i’ve read they where able to walk and talk but then every time she was put I just want to help her and say what on her mind.

Best book. A heart warming story.😊💕

Awesome. I just finished this book it was awesome. 10/10 stars 🙃🙂😁😁😁😁

😍😍😍😍😍. I loved it!! 😆😍 Omgoodness! It is adorable! I definitely recommend this book! You should so get this!! 📖📚

Amazing. I can’t even think of a way to describe the book it was so good!!! 😁😁😁

I LOVED IT!!! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳. This book was so good!!!! I want a movie version of it too! The main character Melody is awesome: don’t let that jerk Claire get you down; you’re smart and great and she’s just mean, Mel! I loved that there’s finally a book about the struggles of not being able to talk. I have never read a book like that before; they hardly make any books about characters who cannot speak. 😑😑 It was really good, but thee were some sad parts (like the sad story of Ollie the goldfish), so I recommend for ages 9 or 10+. Great book!!!!!!!!!!!! 😍🥰😋😚😃😄😁😆😀☺️😊😌🥳👍🤩😃🥰💋👍👍👍👏👏😻😺

Hi. I love this book so much! It’s really helps you understand that even if someone is physically or mentally challenged they can be so smart!

Book. This book is so empowering

Out of my mind. I love this book because it teaches you about people with disabilities. I love Melody because she’s brave, kind and inspiring. I wish there’s a movie about this book because you can go more in depth in the characters life. If there was a movie, I would love to portrayed the character Melody because she’s inspiring and interesting. I am a blind person and sometimes things can be challenging like doing math, but I get through those challenges. I know how Melody feels because not being able to speak and say what comes to your mind is difficult and challenging, just like doing math with your eyes closed is challenging as well. I would recommend this book to anyone because you can gain more knowledge of disabilities. Would give this book 5 stars. You can also check out my technology podcast Blind Techie Geek Speaks. It is a Technology Podcast for the blind or anyone else that might be interested in technology.

I Love This Book. I have to say this was the best most emotionally empowering book I have ever read. I loved this book so much I read it a second time to get a better understanding of this. This book dives into the details of what it feels like to be an Special needs (especially the ones who unfortunately can’t talk). It helps you understand what is feels like to be Melody and what she goes through in her day to day life. All the way from physical limitations, her not being able to be as active, or functional. What she feels like, when ppl mistreat her, or assume she’s as dumb as they think she looks. And all the way to here mental state, when ppl don’t understand her or don’t give her as good of a chance as other kids. I will admit this book will make you smile, cry, and probably want you to punch someone (at the end of the book). But other then that this book helped me rlly understand what It feels like to be in Melodys shoes. And it rlly made me rethink how I think of the disabled. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did, and I also hope you can find the true meaning of this book. ❤️❤️

Good book. We read this book in class and it’s really good

SOOOO GOOD!!!. This is such a great book! The author make it seem like this really did happen, which is not easy to do in a book. It makes you feel just like Melody! You feel frustration, her anger, and her excitement. When you read this book, you truly feel like your in another world! Read this book and you won’t regret it!

BEST BOOK OUT THERE. this book has me beyond words. The author truly incredible. ‘Out of my mind’ is one of the only books i’ve ever found true interest in. Amazing writing skills, really brings out your emotions.

Amazing!. This book was so inspiring, when I was reading it I cryied. Melody can’t talk or move like a normal kid but she tastes thing and sees stuff that others don’t. If you’re looking for a great book read out of my mind!!!

best book ever!. my teacher read this to me when i was in fifth grade and let me tell you i cried but i love this book so much it’s so interesting !

five star rating. i read this back in middle school and it’s the reason i read so much today, years later

Horrible. It was the worst book I ever read in my entire life and was a bunch of 💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬💠💠💠💠🤬🤬🤬☕️☕️☕️☕️🤬🤬🤬🤬💩💩💩💩

😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍. Melody is so cute even if she has CP I read in school. We said the lesson was don’t mistreat people with disabilities.

Interesting idea, bad writing. For such an interesting and eye opening idea the author makes it very boring and hard to read. Every sentence is choppy and the work doesn’t flow.

AWESOME SAUCE!!!!. This book is so amazing that I asked my teacher to read it and she read it and then she loved it so much that she made the whole class read it at read aloud.

It is awesome. I love it. It has a lot of sadness in it like salt. But scattered. ❤️❤️❤️❤️I love it!

MUST READ. Amazing book, couldn’t put it down. Definitely recommend!!

So sad i finished it i want more!!!!!!😥😡. You will laugh😹,you will cry😿,and trust me you will get mad😾😾

awesome. I read this for a children’s literature class and I’m really glad I chose to read this book because it sends a very important message for children around the middle grades. i’m not a very good reader so the grade level that this book is for was good for me and it was easy to read for me

one of the best books. this is by far one of my favorite books, if you are looking for a book to read, this is the one. i couldn’t stop reading it so i ended up reading it in two days!! i really wish this book could never end, i want to learn more!! and the best part is, it’s based on a true story.

AMAZING 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩. Way better than the trash book Wonder

Read it read it read it read it. I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent. A must read for all. Agree with others that it should be a mandatory reading in school

Out of my mind. I am very interested

Love it!. Omg I read this a year or two ago, and I loved the story!

Outstanding yet pretty sad. This is my favorite book. I won’t spoil, but I just couldn’t believe what happened to poor penny. It was very intense. She was soo lucky. There r so many devastating events that melody went through, but she stayed strong. It would be nice if Sharon would write another book similar to this. Or maybe one continuing the story of melody. Thanks a lot for giving me the chance to explore Melody’s world as a special ed.

Meep. I love this book! Such a cute story. And it is a book with a lesson, “don’t judge a book by its cover.”

Unfinished?🤨. This book was one of the best books EVER!😁 Melody is so smart yet in the end she is still not excepted what sense does that make🤨? In my opinion if I was the author I would’ve at least made the ending a little happier. *SPOILER ALERT: the team leaves Melody behind and isn’t even sorry* I’m not saying that the ending has to be all happily ever after but the ending was just depressing 🥺. The book was still great it taught you that don’t judge someone by how they look (otherwise known as DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER) Overall the book was great just felt unfinished. WARNING you will cry, laugh, and want to punch a couple of the characters, also question how the principle is a principle Lesson: PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE NO MATTER WHAT

poop. I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!! READ ITTTTT

Great read. Loved this book. Gave me a better understanding of what a special needs child goes through as well as the family.

Awesome. Everyone should read this at least once before they graduate elementary school. Fans of this might like blended, a book by the same author.

This book is the best!. Hey everyone! Kwaynni here, and starting today, I am going to be a book rater. I love reading books. They are amazing. So, I am going to tell you about Out Of My Mind. My first review I wrote about this book was short and sweet. But I am going to go into further detail. ( WARNING: This review will have spoilers, so skip to paragraph six if you want to know overall how good this book is. 😁) The main character, Melody Brooks, suffers from cerebral palsy. A medical condition that doesn’t allow you to do most things that other kids can do. Which is really really sad. The people who wrote low on this book are just like Claire and Molly. They didn’t take a deep dive in this book. They just took one look at melody and were like, “yeah this is trash” but what readers really need to know is kids are just like kids with disabilities, which is the main message of this book. The storyline is perfect and I’d also suggest it to kids who have disabilities, cerebral palsy, and other things. Sharon M. Draper did a good job on this book. It is great for book clubs. Melody's experience in life has her ups and downs, she is the smartest kid in her class but no one knows it. She has a photographic memory and remembers everything. She is mistreated by people. Like the time her mom took her to the doctor person, and he said she is physically and mentally disabled. Which made her mom cry. It's really tough. Melody is misunderstood and just deserves a chance. People need to be aware that kids with disabilities have feelings too. Claire and Molly are the kids who are mean. They plot against melody and want her to fail. The most saddening part in the book is where the whole class left her behind when they were leaving for the competition. They came in ninth place. They would’ve won with melody. Overall, Out of My Mind is a wonderful book, it can be a tearjerker at some times, but it's all revolving around the main concept and the moral of the story. A kid with disabilities is just like other kids. You just need to get to know them. This book is a five star. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Everyone who rated low on this book, I suggest you read the book again. Because I don’t think you read the whole thing. Don’t be Claire and Molly. Read this book. I know you will enjoy it.

Kailey Ince. I love the effect though the way that melody describes the words are a little confusing and boring.😄😊

Masterpiece. In 4th Grade, my teacher read this book to us for read aloud. At first I wasn’t excited because I thought it was about a fish that jumped out of water. But I almost jumped out of water reading this book. This book is so emotional and you end up rooting for all the characters. It was so heartwarming that I cried when melody said she loved her parents for the first time. I have read this book 3 times now and each time I notice something different. Thank you!

One Of The Best Books Ever!!!. This book helped me understand more about someone’s situation. It was a bit depressing, but the story has a beautiful plot. I love it sooooo much, that I could read it a million times without getting sick of it! 😁

Great. Best book ever I'm not joking you really should read it I love it ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Out of my mind is great 😀😀😀!!!!. This book is a book that teaches you a lesson on don’t judge a book by it cover. The story is so interesting and also teaches another lesson that people like Melody’s life is tougher. Thanks Sharon M. Draper for writing this book. Age 12

AMAZING. I finished this book last night and I absolutely LOVED it! I recommend it for ages 9+ Seriously guys plz buy its amazing 😁🤩❤️

Out Of My Mind. I feel like out of my mind was very enjoyable and I feel like the big message behind it was to not take the simple things for granted. For example, being able to speak, walk and just being able to move freely without anything stopping you. I really liked this book because some parts you can really relate to and it makes you want to read more. From this book I have learnt that you can’t judge someone by the way they look, the way they think or the way they talk because no matter how someone looks on the outside you can never really understand what’s going on on the inside. I feel like the author ended the text with the start repeated at the end because they really want you to know the big message behind the book and to make you know what Melody is going through. So Great!!!!!. I loved this book and I think this is a great read for kids 10+ to Adults. This is definitely some of Sharon Drapers best work & one of my favourite books.

Out of My Mind.. I can relate to everything that’s happened. The pain of being excluded out of something great. Being severely injured. I love how I can see the world out of another person like me and being able to see what they feel in those situations. This book is amazing, and make sure to check out Out of My World!

Best book. One of the best books I have ever read!!!

Out of my mind, could of been better by a little.. I think that the last chapter (chapter 33) the author tried to make Melody tell the ending, then told her story again to see how traumatic it would of been, because some people don’t get that understanding of how scary it would of been in real life and see it as something not as bad. I recommend this book because it’s very entertaining and contains a powerful message, don’t judge a book bu it’s cover. But although I enjoyed this book, I think that in reality the items that melody needed to communicate with, and needed to move around, and even the dog would of cost an enormous amount of money. I would personally write the book as Melody’s family being very poor, and even loose their house, so the world can get a better understanding that homeless people aren’t always homeless because they were throwing away their money on useless objects, but rather doing the best they can to help someone or themselves with what they’ve got; or not able to get a decent paying job exedra.

Reflective. As an educator of 10 or so years now, I have frequently read to my students on a range of topics. Reflections at the conclusion of this text from my students were almost all positive with all taking some message or understanding of differences between others. Messages of acceptance, equality and first impressions were the strongest made. A very good read for my middle school students!

O M G GUYS MIND BLOWN. Probably the best book EVER,!!! Omg I cried when I finished it. So sad I couldn't read more!!! Guys you have to read this, so heart touching and beautiful. "Everyone has a voice, they just need to learn to use it." By Me Haha but seriously everyone, you have not LIVED until you have read it!
