One Second After by William R. Forstchen Book Summary

A post-apocalyptic thriller of the after effects in the United States after a terrifying terrorist attack using electromagnetic pulse weapons.

New York Times best selling author William R. Forstchen now brings us a story which can be all too terrifyingly real...a story in which one man struggles to save his family and his small North Carolina town after America loses a war, in one second, a war that will send America back to the Dark Ages...A war based upon a weapon, an Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP). A weapon that may already be in the hands of our enemies.

Months before publication, One Second After has already been cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read, a book already being discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a truly realistic look at a weapon and its awesome power to destroy the entire United States, literally within one second. It is a weapon that the Wall Street Journal warns could shatter America. In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future...and our end.

Oof. Absolutely terrible. The first book in my entire life I couldn’t finish.

Great Read. Really makes you think of actual possible outcomes in this day and age. Start prepping.

What happens when the lights go out?. This book was a page turner and a must read. The writing could have been better but the plot was fantastic. The scary thing is that this could actually happen, and what happens to society is likely what would happen today. All Americans should read this book.

A glimpse into a possible future. If you don’t know what an EMP or CME can do, please read this book. Take into consideration how quickly people lose their civility after a disaster and multiply it with panic and desperation. How long could you last? Odds are 90% you wouldn’t. This book puts America on notice. There’s no good excuse why our governments do not prepare for this situation and there’s no reason you shouldn’t.

Very scary!. Makes you wonder who you would turn into if something like this happens.

One second after. A book we should all read and be prepared for. Cried tons of tears and realized I would have been one of many to go first. Great read if only to open your eyes!

A "Must Read" for every American...... I was ecstatic to find Mr. Forstchen had written a sequel to his fantastic "One Second After" that I have read 3 times. Every American from mid-teens to 60's should read this great novel. I am 55 yrs old and have been called a "nut" or worse for stating since my mid teens that this great country was becoming too self absorbed, lazy, and spoiled in our comforts, and that one day either a natural disaster or a man caused event would come in my lifetime, and this book describes, in my opinion, exactly what would happen to us when, not if, it would happen. It follows the people of a small town through the daily hardships and heartbreaking loss of their lives as they knew them without exaggeration or the ridiculousness of the popular "Zombie invasion" scenario that is so popular today. Thank you, Mr. Forstchen, for writing this book, and for doing what you can to educate our elected officials to prepare us for this very possible scenario. It's sad that your warnings, and others, have fallen on deaf ears. Folks, do what you can to prepare, at least for a few months, for this possibility to become reality. It takes very little effort to learn at least minimal survival skills, store some food, and should this novel become a reality you may just save the lives of family and possibly even a neighbor or two. Modern life and technology is great, but the skills that our ancestors had, and that we have lazily let go, could very well mean the difference of us surviving the storm that will come in my lifetime, and even if not, maybe my children's and grandchildren's.

Page turner!!!. Must read!!

Do not recommend. The EMP premise is interesting, but the writing style felt amateurish. Perhaps my mistake is comparing this to Cormac McCarthy’s book.

A page turner. This is a well written book and down right depressing. I would pick it up and put it down to escape the dark realities described in the story. I would then pick it up again to find out which direction the story would go. I will definitely check out his other books.

Eye opening!. Eye opening book and realistic read. The drives home As a society , we rely too much on electronic devices to live. This book reveals our significant vulnerability as a nation if we to experience a major EMP.

Wake up call!! A book everyone should read.. Amazing book. So well written. I felt like I was living what was happening on the pages of the book. Everyone should read this book, it’s a wake up call.

All most good. Would have been okay but for an undertone of right-wing propaganda

Page turner!. Excellence, well-researched novel. I read this is less than a week. The author does a great job illustrating many of the details of what could go wrong after such an attack. He brings up things that many people wouldn’t think of.

Too right wing to be right. Though an interesting and suspenseful read, it's terribly right wing. All the good characters are from the Gingrich mind set where all good comes from conservatives and liberals are always bad. Never mind that their revered founding fathers were the liberal activists of their time. The aftermath in this book is overblown because the author assumes that liberals will become totalitarian (a trait exclusively found in conservatives in the real world) or cannibals. The technical difficulties after an EMP strike would be bad but would not totally end civilization. Techies like me can bring back electricity and communication quickly though not the high tech stuff we have now. It would be no picnic but it would only be people versus people where right wing totalitarians manage to take power. So fun read and we should be more protected against this type of attack but don't get sucked in to the right wing hate of the majority of us. We are actually a good people who will work together to survive. It takes a village, after all, and we will still have that.

This series is amazing!. Great series and really makes you think! I hard a hard time putting this series down!!

Mandatory Read. Every American should read this book. The consequences of an EMP attack are profound, and given the growing threat from nuclear capable, peer-level nations, we must be ready for the unthinkable. EMP is the only truly effective way to take down the United States without all the global second and third order effects of all out nuclear war. We must prepare, or we will cease to exist as a country, as a people, and as a force for good in the world.

One Second After. The most riveting book I have read in a very long time. Makes one think would we survive.

Excellent. I thought it was a great read. Couldn't put it down. We could learn a lot about preparedness from this guy.

Very interesting future. The book concerns the future of the US without electrical components and electricity. Provides a very interesting 200 year regression of society, which is quite possible under present circumstances.

Awesome read!. So interesting and terrifying at the same time. If you like “the walking dead”, you will love this book!

Awesome book. Great book really well written

A surprise!. I downloaded this book for free as the story looked interesting. Wow was I surprised! It started a bit slow but really picked up. I will certainly buy the sequel. Good job. Great book.

Meh, depends on what you're looking for. If you want to read a stark reminder of how Ill-equipt the government is to take care of the masses in the event of a catastrophic terrorist attack, this is your read. If you are looking for a book about true grit, the American Spirit, or anything to do with survival or preparedness... I suggest you move on.

One Second After. An amazing book. When an EMP blast takes out all communications and electronics in the United States. This is the story of one town’s attempt at survival. Heartbreaking and frightening.

Slow-pocalypse. On the upside is apocalyptic tale takes no shortcuts, it doesn't jump from catalyst to survivors scratching out an existence in the rubble. No instead, this book looks at the slow descent society takes after the power goes out. Stripped of power our society is unsustainable, and millions die without medicine and food. In a twist, this all happens outside the POV of the characters, they are cut off, and the mass die off, wars, etc, is assumed. This is a slow, quiet death in a small town. Interesting. On the down side, so much focus on a small group begins to become claustrophobic, tiresome, and difficult to read. Also, my least favorite author's crutch makes an appearance: the character who has the one skill the protagonist lacks, shows up just in time. Overall, good, with the few minor annoyances outweighed by the interesting ideas.

Hate Fiction - Loved This. This is a possible real scenario and will really make you think. Lots of good ideas for the up and coming prepper.

One second after. Wow!! I have often wondered what might happen if emp occurred. This book tells what I believe to be a true account of what America may face. We need to prepare! Wonderful read!!

Less frightening than the reality.. The events portrayed in this book are better than what we can expect in the event of an EMP attack, or a X-class solar flare that would take down our aging electrical grid in seconds. Forewarned should result in being forearmed.

Great read. This brought a very important perspective of how quickly the world can change to reality. It was very interesting reading this during the COVID - 19 pandemic.

The Last Second. Frightening, we take for granted our technology. Born at the end of WW11 I have seen both sides. Something that should be addressed. We never have had the issues in the book but we could have! I fear for younger generations.

Mind Blowing. And I thought my survivalist relatives were crazy.

One Second after finishing, I bought his next book. This book was recommended by a colleague. We travel a lot for business and are always looking for good books to pass the time on long flights and lonely nights in hotel rooms. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and quickly ordered the follow-up book, "One Year After".

Military Propaganda. I just finished reading "The Andromeda Strain" and then picked up this book (just so you know where I'm coming from). The whole book seems to be centered around the military and remembering 9/11. Almost all events in this book are painfully foreseeable from the second chapter.

Great book, chilling!. I've read this book twice. Such a great story as terrifying as it is. A LOT to think about, probably prepare for. Really good story, we'll written, hard to put down. Thanks for waking me up a bit more!

Terrible grammatical mistakes. The story line in this book is excellent. It's a real page turner. But the typos, poor sentence structure, and grammatical missteps make it very difficult to read. If you can work thru the lack of proof reading, you will find this book enjoyable.

Excellent subject, mediocre execution.. Within the first few pages I felt I already knew the author’s political stance, simply based on the narration. The writing is good, but not phenomenal, and it appears no one at the publishing company proofread before printing. The characters aren’t developed and the filler dialogue tends to be lacking. However, big events in the story are dramatic and emotional. Overall, this is a decent book. I recommend reading it simply due to the fact that it addresses how ill prepared this country is and what kind of chaos will surely unfold in the event that an EMP weapon is used against us.

Wow. Masterful and scary at the same time!

I cried...a lot. This book is well written and all too thorough. Prepare to take breaks. Stunning.

One Second After. Great read! All to realistic.

Somewhat Overboard. Do not get me wrong this in many way this dead accurate. With that said it flys in face of the EMP commission. The rogue groups I think was a bit over played. When the food and clean water runs out people are not going running crazy in the streets for very long.

Absolutely riveting. I couldn’t put this book down, finished reading it in a day and a half in just a few sittings.

I wish an EMP hit before I bought a digital copy of this book. I thought the premise of this book was interesting but I just did not enjoy it. Cheesy imagery and dialog especially when it comes to anything patriotic.

WHAT IF?. The sign of a great book is that it makes you think, and helps one relate with the characters. An interesting topic, well researched, and presented by Forstchen.

Don’t waste your time. I was only happy when it ended. A boring beginning, middle and end. Written at a middle school reading level, if that. None of the characters likable, not even the dogs. Plot was wack. End was lame, but glad it was over at least. I want my $9.99 back. A true zero star...I can go on and on just like the story did for no reason

This is a must read for everyone!. In today’s world, knowledge and awareness is the only thing that will let you survive. If you are trapped into the digital age, this is a true wake up call for everyone on how quickly and badly society can change when presented with any major disaster or event. Read this again and again! Then do the same to the follow up books.

One second after. This book should be read by everyone. This book is about an actual event that could happen. This is not just a book for preppers, though it is a good book for them also. It is fast paced, well written piece of work. I thoroughly enjoyed it, could not put it down once I started.

Great Read. This is truly a tremendous work by a leading expert in the field. It's what you will wish your family and neighbors would have read before "it" happened. You can fill in the blank on what "it" is.

Such a great read!. This book is addicting! I love fictional apocalyptic books and have to say that this one is at the top of my list! This book is fantastic.

Realistic.. This book has further cemented my desire to always be prepared and continually build positive relations within your community. Strength in numbers.

Far too real. Scary

One second after. Interesting read but very bleak. While the purpose of the book is clear -a return to despair after a nuclear event- it is very discouraging . I hope such a disaster never happens

Scare yourself. I am a physician and ex military. As part of both I have considered the effects of disasters and made plans to respond. I was aware of EMP as to it's effects on the battlefield and served during the time we started to harden our facilities against such an event. The one thing I missed then -after all a nuclear explosion was bad enough!, was the devastating effect of EMP on everything else. Take a look around everything we do is vulnerable from our cars to dumb refrigerators. Regrettably I can see the breakdown of social order, taking a bad situation and making it unimaginably worse, that's what disasters do but this is magnitudes worse. All you need is a decent missile - a SCUD would do and a nuke or even the credible threat of one and you are playing very high stakes poker where a belligerent nation either itself or more likely through proxies chooses to threaten or blackmail another to get its way. What country would risk the devastation to defend the rights of another. Sure we could blow them away afterwards but the damage would be done. Nuclear containment is patently not working therefore we need to develop a strategy that mitigates the risks and hardening the power distribution system and critical societal resources is achievable and economically viable. IMHO this threat is real and far more likely than an asteroid impact or virtually anything else that could threaten the survival of society as we know it. May our leaders have the foresight to consider this.

It should scare you into doing something before its too late.. This book is an eye opener for those already "switched on"! As a law enforcement officer I've had nine years of experience with the worst animals my country has to offer. There are those in society that would victimize and violate others if it were not for the rule of law, take that fear away, add in desperation, and you have this scenario. This book should be an eye opener for those unprepared to provide and protect their families and loved ones. No one else will do it for you. I couldn't believe the amount of research that went into this book. It gave me a lot to think about it and I believe I can be better prepared for the eventualities that would come from such a scenario or a CME. It should scare you, scare you into action.....

Fun read, by a terrible writer. If bad writing puts you off, don’t bother. But if you are a fan of apocalyptic fiction, it’s still worth reading.
