Auld Acquaintance by Ruth Hay Book Summary

First novel in a series of six contemporary women's fiction books about second chances and self-discovery!

Auld Acquaintance by Ruth Hay is the story of a woman in her 60s who has lost her confidence through life events, including a divorce. Anna has a part-time job in a library, and a group of good friends, but she is sinking into a depression.

Unexpectedly, she receives a legal letter informing her that she has inherited a piece of property in Scotland. Her first instinct is to ignore this letter as she has no knowledge of the person named as the owner.

Anna's friends persuade her to travel to Scotland and stay until she can decide how to dispose of the farm house near Oban. So begins an adventure which opens up prospects for Anna and introduces her to a new environment and new people who help her.

Will Anna adjust to living in a farm house with the minimum of amenities?

Will she solve the family mystery of the unknown relative who has bestowed this legacy on her?

Will she leave Canada for Scotland or return to her homeland and her safe life there?

This novel is the first in a series. It is specifically designed to appeal to a demographic of women who enjoy reading, who require the printed page in their hands and who want a good story, in an interesting setting, with a positive outcome.

Anna's group of friends and the family mysteries she discovers in the first book, are component parts of the series.

In Time Out Of Mind, (Book 2), Anna's story continues, although that is not obvious at the start. The issue of 'the sandwich generation' is explored in this novel, which is multi-generational and multi-level.

The author intends to focus on several characters from the first book in subsequent novels with a view to garnering an audience which enjoys discovering more about favourite personalities and their lives, in much the same way as world-renowned authors Rosamunde Pilcher and Maeve Binchy have been able to do.

One of the features of the series is its international appeal. There are 4.7 million people in Canada who describe themselves as "of Scottish descent" and a further 1.5 million in Australia.

Auld Aquaintance. I love this story set in two beautiful countries. Anne’s adventure at a time in her life when she needed a change brought me several evenings of enjoyment. I’m looking forward to Ruth Hay’s next book in the series.

Auld aquaintance. I thought I reviewed this before but I’d didn’t register. On my printout I keep of all the books I have read I gave this my highest approval mark. That isn’t easy to get. Because I read so much, I can’t remember the details of the book but I know it was excellent. Thanks

Anna is not likable. The story was interesting but the main character ends by destroying the quiet, isolation and wild beauty that she said she enjoyed. Tourists, crowds, and all the Canadian noise and money making projects. The wild life will lose territory and the serenity will be destroyed by the intrusion of too many humans. I was interested in Helen. Anna was a typical busy body that looked down on others and over reacted to every trivial matter. The proof that Canadians are not the people they once were thought to be.

Auld Acquaintance. First time reading this author, but it won’t be the last. Not my usual type of book, and so glad I didn’t pass over it. The characters were wonderful, their lives, so interesting, the travel log, so descriptive, the scenery, so easy to imagine. I thoroughly enjoyed this story !

Loved reading "Auld Acquaintance" by Ruth Hay. I hope it is released in Large Print and Audiobook on CD. I kept thinking of two friends, that would enjoy this book also, but reading on a devise is not desired. Loved the storyline, and characters.

What a lovely story!. I spent quite a bit of time, flipping between map apps and Wikipedia while reading this novel I happened upon, possibly through BookBub. I haven't done this sort of mapping of a book since I was Fiona's age, and I was reading Roberta Gellis' medieval-set novels. Reading this novel was a lot of fun--almost like visiting a fascinating relative you haven't met for ages. Scotland felt like home to me, as well as to Anna Mason, even though I have no familial links to it, at least in this life. Canadian family, yes, though. I confess that I'd prefer the west coast, away from the North Sea storms, closer to the Gulf Stream, and to the Hebrides--and Islay especially, whence come my favourite malts. As necessary for my enjoyment, the characters were fun to meet, the settings lovely, interesting history, and a good tale. You'll want tea and at least a snack, as there is some good food mentioned. The fish & chips shop mentioned does exist, and its menu looks good. I must read the rest! I want to know more! Marina

Auld Acquaintance. We all want to escape & start a new life!

Auld Acquaintance. This was an amazing book to read. Just could not put it down. Some books are hard to get interested in, the beginning so boring. This book fascinating from beginning to end.

Auld Acquaintance by Ruth Hay. A great read, and one that, at last, has an older woman as the main character! I thoroughly enjoyed the slow revealing of the central mystery, and the descriptions of Glasgow, Oban, the countryside, the Scottish people, the wildlife ... I downloaded this book as a free read, but am looking forward, with delight, to purchasing more in the series, and also delving into other series. Thankyou, Ruth Hay, for cheering my world.

Auld Acquaintance. Just loved this and the author was correct - no nightmares after reading in bed. I always say I like to be entertained, not scared to death when I am reading. This is just a beautiful story and very well written. Thank you, Ruth very much.

Auld Acquaintance. For anyone who has visited or lived in Scotland, this fictional work transports you back to that land with strong imagery entwined in a story that applauds the inherent inner strength in women. A great read.
