Cyra Noavek and Akos Kereseth have grown up in enemy countries locked in a long-standing fight for dominance over their shared planet. When Akos and his brother are kidnapped by the ruling Noavek family, Akos is forced to serve Cyra, the sister of a dictator who governs with violence and fear. Cyra is known for her deadly power of transferring extraordinary pain unto others with simple touch, and her tyrant brother uses her as a weapon against those who challenge him. But as Akos fights for his own survival, he recognizes that Cyra is also fighting for hers, and that her true gift—resilience—might be what saves them both.

When Akos and Cyra are caught in the middle of a raging rebellion, everything they’ve been led to believe about their world and themselves must be called into question. But fighting for what’s right might mean betraying their countries, their families, and each other.

When the time comes, will they choose loyalty or love?

And don't miss The Fates Divide, Veronica Roth's powerful follow-up novel!

Great read. I couldn't put it down and when it ended I was sad the next book wasn't out yet! I wanted more of this story.

Confusing. This book started off confusing and when I finished is I was still kinda confused. Also it was kinda boring that I felt like I didn’t really read the book. It felt like, when I was trying to remember what I just read, I was recalling a book that I read years ago. It was also very predictable. I didn’t like how it was written as well. First two chapter were the boy then BAMM!! part two and twenty chapters of only the girl. Then part three were it went back and fourth between the two sometimes I was confused who I was reading about. I would not suggest buying this, rent it from the library or something.

It plateaued then cliff dived nowhere. 500+ pages in and I started skipping then scrolling then I stopped. The beginning was very intriguing, setting up the scene and backstory of the main characters. Bit of a throwback to Divergent with some swift and edgy dialogue. And in the mix I was hoping for more insight into the love story part, but it never developed anything deep or serious. So after the spaceship journey for scavenging things I lost the intrigue from there. Trying to read the book was like: meeting someone new who has few but common interests with you and when you think you’re gonna get to know them better, you get introduced you to random people, and then more random people. And where you thought you knew what was going on but then, bam - randomness happens. It got disjointed a lot in the middle and I can’t bring myself to finish the book.

For what's to come. It's funny how people are judging this book based on how she ended Allegiant. Personally, I loved how Allegiant ended, it was fresh and created depth to the story. Had you feel something more for Tris and her journey. With that being said, I am excited for this book. Veronica Roth is a great writer and has a way of making you feel one with characters, the stories she presents, and the world they love in. The Divergent series is one of my favorites series, and I am excited to see what's next with Carve the Mark and what it brings from the mind Veronica Roth.

Awesome book. Great stuff

Incredible. I read this book in a matter of 2 days, because I just couldn't put it down! The whole entire storyline and plot is thought out so well, and you can easily tell how much work was put into his novel. The book touches your heart with emotion and let's you see the perspectives of two different lives. I read the divergent series previously, and loved that trilogy! I heard a lot of people were afraid to read this book because of the ending of allegiant, but don't let that stop you! The ending of allegiant was insanely depressing, but I don't think it could've ended in a better way! Carve the Mark is worth it! Veronica Roth has never disappointed me before, and continues to thrill me with her amazing novels!

Not worth it. I just finished the book and it was a chore. I was a fan of the divergent series and was let down by this series. The lack of characters development was what I think hurt this book the most, I didn't believe the characters were people, to one dimensional and bland. I think the author should have spent more time on her story development that on just getting a good idea that went nowhere. Save your money and time.

WAY better than Divergent. It's a relief to finally have a Young Adult book that's more Adult than Young. This book does not shy away from death or violence, and can be rather brutal at times. The science fiction of it is also a welcome and refreshing break from the countless dystopian novels. A trend that irritates me in many YA books is that there's always a lot of nothing happening. That's not the case here. Carve the Mark is very well paced, every chapter and scene has meaning and purpose to developing the characters and keeping the story moving forward. I only have one complaint about this book: the last chapter should be removed. Don't worry, I won't spoil anything. The second to last chapter has a pretty significant ending, one the that would do a great job of leading you into the second book. And then you read the last chapter. It's not a bad ending in the way you might be thinking, it's humble and heart warming and gives you a sense of camaraderie amongst the characters. Sounds good, but not when it comes AFTER what would've made for a great ending, it completely downplays the events of the previous chapter as if they weren't that important. It felt like an ending to give you a sense of closure, but in doing so, makes you forget that you're only half way through the story.

Great book. Started off a bit slow for me, but when it gets good, it gets GOOD

Carve the Mark. An interesting story, well scripted and entertaining. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

Carve The Mark. I honestly loved the two main characters

Go good books. Haven’t read it just seen the sample. I like it already. And I read divergent, so I think it’ll be a good book series

Veronica Roth does not disappoint.. This novel exceeded all of my expectations. Veronica Roth is an insanely talented writer, at such a young age her talents are bewildering. I fell in love with the Divergent Trilogy years ago, and Carve the Mark was also phenomenal. The next book I am highly anticipating, the amount of thought put into this storyline and her characters truly astounds me. Her story is unprecedented, and inspiring. Well worth the money.

Blah!!!. I can’t believe I’m giving this book one star!! I’m a fan of VR and was excited to read more from her. She’s shown she’s a great story teller when it comes to books, but I’m so very disappointed with this story. It was completely painful to follow. I couldn’t connect with any of the characters or the story. It was very confusing at times. I agree with others that the whole thing needed more development. This is the first book I couldn’t wait to finish because it felt more like finishing a chore. The entire time my mind wandered: “can’t wait to delete this book from my iBooks”

This book was so hyped, but world building fail.. Such a amazing world with so much possibility, but the world building felt quite rushed and explanatory at times. Liked Cyra as she was complex and intriguing, but her brother felt like every other evil villain and his supposed guilt and anguish at his crimes didn't quite come across. Confused by the switch between first person and third person for the two characters...? I liked the sojourn - that was exciting. But again the world they visited didn't quite seem real enough. Breaking in and out and escaping seemed to just happen - not very believable. And of course there's a scene in an amphitheatre with a fight to the death, YAWN. And so much killing. I didn't feel the vengeance or raw emotion that a character might need to build up to something like that - maybe because it seemed to happen every other chapter. It became quite repetitive. Couldn't quite get the setting either - one moment you're in an almost remote almost tribal culture with limited resources surrounded by potions and poisons, the next moment there are spaceships and magical but tech cures for serious wounds. It may have helped to explain what the deep rooted divide was about between the two warring sides - or was it just they both had claim to the planet - which also didn't seem very believable geographical. Was the divide a literal 50/50 - did the populations cover all the planet? It almost felt like a battle between two villages rather than nations. I think overall I was just never in the moment with this book which I usually find comes easy with SF/Fantasy, but it could be fantastic and there are moments of sparkle. This book was so hyped! Maybe book 2 will be better...

Never Ever. I will never read anything by this author again. She betrays her readers.

The best way to get hooked on a book is to start in the middle... Said no one ever. Sample starts on Chapter 7. Enough said.

Disappointing. I was excited and scared to read the latest book from Veronica Roth. I mean she broke my heart in Allegiant, but I loved all of the Divergent series. I truly felt I knew each and every character. However, Carve the Mark is lacking in every way. I can't even picture the characters in my head, let alone feel as if I have any connection with them. The plot is decent, but there is too much "make believe" which made it hard to follow. If Roth had written this book before Divergent, I'm quite sure she would not have developed her current fan base.

Eh. It was mostly filler and it just wasn’t as engaging enough to deserve more than three stars. The characters were bland and predictable. This is the kind of book I’d read if I turned my brain off. If that were possible, it might’ve been worth five stars.

Amazing!. Love this book!! I really thought that everything went together perfectly and the characters are so cute.

Outstanding. I read the arc of this book and it was completely outstanding. Highly recommend to Star Wars and divergent fans

Please Provide Sample That Begins On Page One. Why is the sample Chapter 7? Having read the Divergent series I am interested in this book. But I want to read a sample that begins with page one of chapter one, not chapter seven. It's never been my habit to consider buying a book by reading a chapter in the "middle."

Amazing.... I have read the sample chapter and the synopsis, and I think that the book will be amazing. I doubt that she will kill off a main character again. I can't wait to read it.

Very great book. I read this book in a day. If you're a fan of Star Wars, Divergent, and anything of the like then you'll love this book. People need to stop complaining about the Divergent series because this is not the place for it. I loved this book and can't wait for the next one.

A game changer. If you expected this to be a fast paced book it wasn’t.It sort of threw me off until i became aware that you had to swallow it bit by bit to actually engulf the book and understand it. The details were there beautiful and precise. It’s a story that you have pace yourself to actually enter it’s world and understand it. It’s intricate and reminds you of our daily challenges in today’s world society because we don’t understand cultures of different regardless of how close by borders we are and yet so different even if we live and breathe the same air. Roth did a great job. Can’t wait to read the Fates Divide!

LOVE THIS BOOK. I read this book at least 10 times. You know it’s a good book when you can read it multiple times. Some of my friends in 7th grade say that this book is for middle schoolers (even though I read it when I was ten), but if you are a VERY mature reader, READ THIS NOW!!! (Also, the book makes more sense when you read it a second time)👍

Not worth it. Weird book. Disjointed storyline, weird ending.
