They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.

Now we rise.

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy.

Best book!. This book is amazing. How Tomi brings the characters to life is flawless. She gave me a whole new perspective to life. I can’t wait for the sequel on the 3rd of December(children of virtue and vengeance). Tomi, you’re amazing, thank you💜.

Loved it!!!!!!!!!!!. I’m not sure how I’ll be able to wait until March for this next book. I originally purchased the book for my middle school aged daughter, as a suggestion from her previous teacher. I started reading the book without my daughter, thinking I’d just get a feel for it and read the first chapter. Needless to say, I was unable to put the book down, so I ordered my own copy as well as the audible version so I could listen to the story while driving or folding clothes.

GREAT STORY!!!!. It’s sad because Inan just refused to join the right side of the fight just because his father caused his pain and he doesn’t want to face the wrath of his father. He thought he was doing the right thing by being in the wrong. Amari and Inan were taught to fear the maji because of what happened to king Sarans family, but at the time, the maji he faced were people who wanted to take the throne from Inans grand father. King Saran vowed that the same firey fate his old family got would not come to pass again in his new life! But the thing is that he doesn’t even realize that he’s a tyrant, or if he does he just wants to avenge his family

Excellent!. Absolutely amazing book. I guess I can see why people compare it to Harry Potter but other than magic there’s really no other comparison it’s really nothing like Harry Potter and it has its own identity. Well written and exciting it’s a hard to put down. Read this book before they make a movie out of it. I can’t wait for book 2! There’s a reason Tomi Adeyemi won the Andre Norton award for this book and is a finalist for Lodestar Award for Best Young Adult Book. Don’t miss the chance to read this book! Also if you are able to listen to the audio book it’s read by Bahni Turpin who is amazing and one of the best voice actors in existence!

Awesome Parallel. Ok, so for the kid who couldn't read Harry Potter books cause my mamma super saved and thought it was demonic. This book was EVERYTHING! The parallels in this novel just amazed me. You have African folklore, meets magic, meets African American social injustices I mean it just all worked together so well. 5 out of 5 stars. I'm a new fan!

Pageturner. I enjoyed submersing myself in this world.

Loved this book!. I absolutely loved this book! From the colorful ness of the characters to the entire plot. I Love sci-fi/fantasy and this boom has filled a gap in my life offering a rich cultural experience that makes me proud to be an African to a very complex and developing story line that was at times frustrating because the character were so enveloping j genuinely cared about their endings. I am salivating over the sequel. My only complaint is that the release for the sequel was pushed back. This series is at the. Why least worthy of a trilogy. Hoping the sequel does no disappoint

Loved!!!!. Tomi, please keep writing and inspiring. The culture desperately needs this type of content. I loved literally everything about this book. Thank you!

Fantastic. This book is so good! It’s probably one of the best books of this Year. My favorite character is actually Princess Amari, it shows how she comes from being so privileged and weak to becoming the powerful person she is now. The world Building is awesome, I just wish there were more Scenes with Zeile and her Lion. Definitely worth the Read!

Skies!. This book was so amazing! It took me months to read it because I wanted to drag it out. I can’t think of a single thing that I don’t like about this book. This book inspired me to learn more about the religion of my Nigerian ancestors and I have found that I am a Sister of Yemoja. My favorite color is blue, the ocean is my favorite place EVER, and I seem to be hyper aware of the number 7. She’s always been and influence to me and I would never have known it without this wonderful book! I can hardly wait for Children of Vengeance and Virtue.

Solid. A solid fantasy tale. A beautiful “original” not yet explored fantasy world. While some plot points seem forced that’s made up for by the majesty and fast paced nature of the story.

10/10. The author done an amazing job of reeling you in that you forget everything in your actual reality besides this amazing story. 10/10 highly recommend 🫶🏾

Amazing and inspiring. I felt every emotion reading this book. I couldn’t put it down. It’s a must read!

Overhyped on Some Levels. The inspiration for this novel (BLM) is fantastic! However, I feel the hype was centered MOSTLY around how it was based off a real life Nigerian culture and features a black cast but less so on the execution of plot, characters, & writing. 1) Plot: Really basic & predictable. 2) Characters: It was awesome to finally have black MC’s in fantasy and I enjoyed the characters, but I couldn’t buy into the enemies-to-lovers relationship because it was insta-lovey and I couldn’t justify Inan’s actions. 3. Writing: Loved how dramatic it was, but multiple POV’s ruined the suspense. - If you haven’t read a lot of fantasy this will definitely be a fantastic read. If you have, it might feel overhyped to you like it was to me. Overall, COBAB is a great debut novel that has expanded the horizons of YA literature into more representative territory and I’m excited to see what comes next!

Beautiful story. I loved this story and it was written so beautifully. I pray there are sequels, similar to the Harry Potter books, and that this story is turned into a movie. So wonderful to see the history of black people told with such beautiful detail, showing the juxtaposition of discrimination to that of our real world, and ultimately illuminating the glory and divine nature that God has gifted all of us.

Fun story; shallow characters. Overall, a fun story. There were many points, however, where I did not quite believe the characters; they’d take courageous actions whenever needed, but constantly denied their courage. It felt like they were meant to be relatable (uncertain and scared), but still needed to act in ways that compelled the story. The result is confusing and distracting, and does not show great depth of character.

Good read. Fun and adventurous read while on vacation. Great start to a moving end or for a continued series. Can’t wait to start on book 2!

Amazing 😊. Words cannot describe my thoughts about this book! The readers note was accurate and is very informative for people that don’t like too talk about these certain topics and issues. And the whole book is wonderful My favorite character is Zeliè But overall just like, I was at the edge of my seat the whole time WOW! I’m happy for what I got and I’ll definitely be reading the series

Great read!. I loved this book and it’s characters! The development of the plot and detail in the setting makes it worthwhile. I also love the fact that all the characters are people of color! You should definitely read and recommend it to others. We need more books like this for the community!

Great. This book was fantastic and I loved the characters. The emotion is so raw and they all are great. It was a good fantasy read and the magic was very interesting. Definitely worth reading you won’t regret it. For people who have read it so but I still love Inan 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

Buying the Sequel. Holy Moly can we get the movie adaption. EPIC

Awesome. My mom got me this book and when I first seen it I almost fell out it was so thick but when I got to reading it the book was very interesting.I look forward to reading the next one.

Amazing Read. I couldn’t put the book down 10/10 definitely recommend

The best read!. This was one of the most exhilarating books I’ve read in a long time. Will definitely be re-reading this series over and over again #Tzain&Amari !

Review. I enjoyed how the author created this unique and abstract society. She finds creatives way to immerse the reader with this world by relating it to larger issue such as the majority v. minority. However, the characters were flat, annoying, melodramtic, and perdictable. The characters made poor choices and there was hardly any character development within the story.

Wonderful book. Very well written ! Full of love, determination, passion and strength from within.

Just Amazing. I first got this book for my sister when I was 10. I always thought it looked so cool, but I didn’t know if I was old enough to read it. Fast forward 2 years and I am amazed, inspired, and happy! This book does a great job of combing African culture and magic. (It’s like an African Harry Potter!) and besides the adventure, it poses questions about class and minorities. I can’t wait for the movies, but they better not mess up the series.

EXCELLENT. The 5 star ratings are there for a reason. BUY THE BOOK!

I couldn’t put it down. I haven’t read a book that fast in such a long time, it continues to leave you wanting more.

😭💖💥🔥🙌🏾. If Avatar the Last Airbender, Black Panther and Harry Potter had a baby, it would be this book! Read it before the movie spoils it!

Amazing‼️‼️. I am really not a reader but I could NOT put this down. EVERY DAY I was reading this book! I mean...the fantasy, the action, development of characters. The way she connected our African culture to real life situations today! The love and pain was real. I could definitely feel so many of the characters in so many ways. The book club I am part of called “LIT Literature” is reading it and we all love it. I just finished today and I’m not supposed to for another two weeks! It’s THAT good! I can’t wait to read the next one! BUY THIS BOOK! Tell someone about it! You won’t be disappointed!

Amazing. I love YA book, however often when reading them I find myself thinking “wow that was really dumb; why did this character do that?” not once did I feel like these characters intentionally were doing something that made no sense. The title didn’t initially grab me so I passed it up many times. I am so glad I read this book. From beginning to end it kept me pulled in. Once I got to the end and I read the author’s reason for writing this book I wanted to stand and cheer for her like I was cheering on Kaep and the Niners in the Super Bowl. I made it to 36 when so many like me didn’t. I will become a Melaninated Medical Professional when Atatitana will not. You did a wonderful job with this book Tomi. Thank you

So worth it.. (No spoilers!) I think the last time I picked up a book to read on my spare time was when I was like 7 and obsessed with Greek mythology. I only picked up this book because my friend kept telling me to read it, and I caved in after like two weeks. The world building is phenomenal, every aspect is so well thought out. Small details like the enchantments being in Yoruba make it so much more immersive. The only complaint I have is that most of the main cast wasn’t that great. By the end I wasn’t fond of anyone except for Amari (I’d say she’s the second main lead??), whom I didn’t even like in the beginning. Despite this, my opinions on the characters never affected how much I enjoyed the story so I don’t think this is worth taking away any stars for! Overall, this was an amazing read. I’ve never reviewed a book before so sorry this is kind of dense lol but I promise this book is 100% worth your time! I spent four hours of my flight reading none stop :)

CAN’T PUT CBB DOWN!!!. My Naija sister did welll!!! I’ve been obsessed with this book ever since I started it and it’s my one of my favorites. And since this is a West African Fantasy it’s great because we don’t get a lot of books that represent us blacks. And I love how Tomi Adeyemi put still put traditional African things in there mixed with magic. I’m so glad I got this and if you love fantasy you’re gonna live this!!! 🇳🇬💜💜💜

Captivating. This book is amazing to say the least. 10/10

Put the cover picture back on the book.. Apple, would you please put the full picture back on the cover of my book I purchased. The readers that don’t want it on the cover of their book can request to have it removed. I would like to see my full cover. The cover picture enhances the mystique of the book. Thank you.

Solid. I liked this book for a few different reasons first being the creativity that went into this concept along with the character development of the main characters and lastly the different languages and tribes mentioned in my opinion would require a lot of research so I commend the author for her work effort. My only critique of this book is I felt some chapters were too drawn out I felt like I got the gist of some characters by the first few pages. However, good book

An adventure through History. It was good really good! It takes you on a adventure of history, justice and romance. One couple of Romeo and Juliet and one of true love it’s a story of forgotten past leading into a future where Orisha is saved.

Amazing. I couldn’t put down my phone. I wanted to continue reading!

Absolutely loved it. Started back reading and this was the first book I started with. It was very mesmerizing and it pulled me in with every word. GREAT READ. Felt every emotion within me throughout the entire book.

Amazinggggg. Loveeee this book! I stayed up all night to finish, I just couldn’t put it downnn! A must read!!!

Excellent read. I eagerly await the next installment!!! Do yourself a favor and read this book!

Worth it!. I read the book and it’s really good

Great Book!!!. My teacher actually told me to read this book! I was shocked by how amazing it was!!! Can’t wait to read the 2nd book!!!😝👍

Yes!. Fabulously developed and well rounded characters! African spirituality, action, love story and a tragedy all wrapped into one!

Awesome!!!. Great read I have this book in hard cover. The first day I got it I couldn't put it down. Can't wait for the next installment ❤️

👏🏾🧙🏾‍♂️. Outstanding book. I enjoyed how the fantasy world intertwined with real world .

Children of the blood and bone. Definitely a must read! The constant action kept me turning the pages! Buy it and you won’t be disappointed.

Astonishing. I’m blown away by this masterpiece. She truly may be the new JK Rowling.
