Martor la evenimentele dramatice care au zguduit țara sa din decembrie 1944 până în 1949, Kazantzakis începe să scrie Fratricizii în 1949, dându-i tușa finală în 1954. Temerea sa – „presimt că în Grecia nu se va publica decât mult mai târziu“ – s-a adeverit, ediția ateniană apărând abia în 1963. Tradus, cu multiple reeditări, în peste 20 de limbi, romanul păstrează același dramatism și aceeași vibrație specifice marilor opere ale titanului literaturii grecești, fiind cel mai aproape de lumea noastră, măcinată de lupte fratricide.
Săptămâna Mare, în vâltoarea războiului civil din Grecia izbucnit după încheierea celui de-al Doilea Război Mondial. Patimile lui Hristos, retrăite aievea într-un sat din nordul Greciei, unde oamenii sunt nevoiți să îndure consecințele devastatoare ale conflictului dintre trupele guvernamentale și rebelii din munți. Părintele Iannaros, exasperat de confruntarea sângeroasă, se străduie din răsputeri să împace taberele adverse. Efort cu atât mai dificil din punct de vedere moral, cu cât în fruntea rebelilor se află chiar fiul său.
