My Mother, the Psychopath by Olivia Rayne Book Summary

What do you do when the person you’re meant to trust the most in the world is the one trying to destroy you?

‘When people met her they thought how lovely she was, this attractive woman with a beautiful laugh. But she was one person in public and another behind closed doors. Who would she be today? The loving mother? The trusted teacher? The monster destroying my life?’

Olivia has been afraid ever since she can remember. Out of sight, she was subjected to cruelty and humiliation at the hands of the one person who should have loved and protected her at all times – her mother, Josephine.

While appearing completely normal to the outside world, Josephine displayed all the signs of being a psychopath – unbeknown to her daughter until adulthood – and Olivia grew up feeling scared, worthless and exploited. Even when she found the courage to cut ties, her mother found new ways to manipulate and deceive, attempting to destroy her life with a vicious campaign of abuse.

Now Olivia has come to terms with her past and gives a fascinating, harrowing and deeply unsettling insight into what it’s like growing up with a psychopathic parent.

Compulsively Readable - 6 Stars. If only every book could stir so much thought, emotion and anticipation! It’s a real life horror story that reads like a work of fiction with thrilling, edge-of-your-seat suspense. Good for Olivia getting the thoughts, feelings and facts on paper and exposing a past that could’ve broken her, would’ve broken most, but propelled her forward! A haunting read by a brave woman- a triumph!

I want a refund. MY OPINION: First, Olivia Rayne is not the author. Instead, it was her “friend” who, as luck would have it, happens to be a woman who is fixated on psychopaths and says she could “recite the hallmarks of psychopathy as easily as her ABCs.” Gee, what are the odds????? I think there are major RED FLAGS throughout “My Mother, the Psychopath.” As a person whose mother and ex are extremely to the right on the psychopathic spectrum, I have a highly developed sense of when I am dealing with others who have a lifetime of lived experience/knowledge on the subject. This book feels emotionally empty & superficial. It is crammed with overly elaborate details about random external things while nearly devoid of interior life. When you’ve spent your life dealing with a psychopath, you have intense emotions, thoughts, etc. It’s what’s missing that makes me wonder about and question whether this story is true. I was hoping that the book would be a way to pseudo “relate” to someone else’s similar experience. I wanted to compare notes and instead, I feel duped and I want a refund. The author begins each chapter by following a boilerplate list of psychopathy symptoms, as seen on Dr. Hare’s checklist and/or the DSM-5. Anyone with lived experience knows that the checklist is only a jumping off point. There are endless subtleties which are easy enough to recognize and communicate once you finally figure out what the H is going on. This felt formulaic and hard to believe. If I am wrong, then I truly apologize, but something feels “OFF.” I never write book reviews but wanted to voice my intense dislike of this book.

I think her mom left a review. Great insight. As someone with a mother with a antisocial personality disorder, it was validating to read her experience. Hilarious how one of the main reviews of this reads exactly the same as letters from her mother. Interesting.

My mother the psychopath. This is a story of real life and how we deal with it. Psychopaths walk among us and can be our mother or friend. Olive finds herself and grows her strength and resolve to be a healthy person. Her story is so inspirational to all who find themselves in any relationship that will destroy you. Get help and get out. You are worth your own life. You deserve your own life. Find it and keep it.

Read in a heartbeat!. Amazing story of bravery and resilience. Couldn’t put it away, crying and screaming inside. Thank you, made me hug my children just a little bit more tight every evening.

heart wrenching and life changing. Thank you so much for this brave recount of your pain. i finished this cover to cover in one day and it has completely changed things for me!!!

Heartbreaking. As a recent mother, this book made my heart ache. I was reluctant at first to read it, knowing how it would affect me but I believe it's important to have an understanding of such behaviours so we can identify the signs from any potential child who could be mistreated. Not all wounds are physical, and often it is the mental scars that never go away. Thank you for such a well-written book I highly recommend.

Jaw dropping. How brave to tell this story! It was gripping from the off. As a mother and grandmother myself I could never imagine treating my girls so horrifically. Wouldn’t it be fascinating if Josephine wrote her memoirs.

Brilliant!!. Amazing, so good well written and gripping I could not put this book down I would definitely recommend

Close To Home. I had an interest in this book because of my childhood. Not only did it have me lost in my own reality of a similar situation it has also made me set back, think and look at re setting my Priorities and life, I am 42 years old I just hope that other people read this at a younger age and it can help change their life like I know it is going to change mine. So far to go but without this book it would never have felt possible. Heart wrenching, emotional overwhelming but most of all it provides the old cliche realisation “you really are not alone”

Wow just wow. I don’t think I have the right words to convey just how good this book is, it’s well written and I couldn’t put it down. This is definite a must read for anyone who even has a hint their parents may be a Psychopath, very insightful. Thank you for sharing your story.

Tragic, toxic, terrifying. So riveting I read it all in one day. Such a sad terrifying childhood filled with fear and guilt and self loathing. Exactly what a toxic parent wants and thrives off.

Average!. I enjoyed reading this book; however found it to be a little ordinary.
