Un matin de décembre, trois soldats venant d’Algérie arrivent en permission à Paris : le sergent Lachaume, le caporal Valette, le deuxième classe Lasteyrie. Ils arrivent pleins d’espoir ; mais, malgré la bonne volonté et l’affection de quelques-uns, ils ne rencontrent que la solitude et l’incompréhension. Ils parlent, on leur parle, mais personne n’entend personne. Ils se voient « à part », rejetés à leur colère et à leur désespoir, pleurant leur jeunesse perdue. Et, à la dernière heure, ils lancent à la face de Paris indifférent un défi dérisoire et tragique. Une tristesse violente, une amertume désolée, donnent à ce livre un ton qui saura toucher ceux pour qui il a été écrit. Tous les jeunes hommes de cette génération y trouveront l’écho de leur propre colère et cette fraternité qui, au milieu de l’absurdité, est leur plus sûre sauvegarde.
