La presente antología recoge ocho cuentos representativos y algunos ensayos breves escritos por Flannery O'Connor en "Andalusia", la finca familiar en la que vivió sus últimos años mientras avanzaba su enfermedad degenerativa.
Son historias que escuecen y sacuden las entrañas de quien las lee, en las que, con gran osadía, la escritora pone en el centro del relato acontecimientos y personajes inverosímiles: un preso fugado que asesina a toda una familia para averiguar si la vida vale la pena; una granjera que, delante de una pocilga llena de cerdos, ve el final de los tiempos; un niño maltratado que pone su esperanza en las promesas de un predicador loco; un pobre diablo que hace descansar su identidad en el tatuaje que se hace en la espalda, o un nieto y su abuelo que se reconcilian ante la visión de la estatuilla rota y maltrecha de un negro artificial.
Con ellas, la O'Connor quiere "abrir los oídos de los sordos y los ojos de los ciegos", proponiendo un giro tan radical que conlleve la recuperación de una mirada que, tal vez, se puede haber perdido viendo, y de una escucha que, quizá, se puede haber perdido oyendo.
