The Secret by Lee Child & Andrew Child Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Don’t miss the hit streaming series Reacher!

A string of mysterious deaths. A long-classified mission. A young MP with nothing to lose.

1992. All across the United States respectable, upstanding citizens are showing up dead. These deaths could be accidents, and they don’t appear to be connected—until a fatal fall from a high-floor window attracts some unexpected attention.

That attention comes from the secretary of defense. All of a sudden he wants an interagency task force to investigate. And he wants Jack Reacher as the army’s representative. If Reacher gets a result, great. If not, he’s a convenient fall guy.

But office politics isn’t Reacher’s thing. Three questions quickly emerge: Who’s with him, who’s against him, and will the justice he dispenses be the official kind . . . or his own kind?

Disappointing. Usually the Jack Reacher novels are hard to put down, this was hard to finish.

S Child.. Fantastic read. Kudos to the brothers Child.

Not bad. Not bad but at the lower end of the Reacher books

Reacher. Not the best, time to end this series. I’m done!!!!

Book. I will not buy his 2024 book!

Great. Great

Classic Reacher!. I’ve read all of the Reacher series and this is one of the best books in the series. It’s a captivating storyline that keeps you engaged while being a very smooth read. There are a few hilarious moments in the book that Reacher fans will definitely appreciate. Good job guys!

Money Grab. Cashing out on a great brand. Unreadable.

Save your time and money. I’ve read every single Reacher book and loved every one. This one was so so boring. Kept thinking “ it’s got to get better “ but it does not.

The Secret. I liked it . Exciting and continuously interesting. The Reacher character is great. I very much recommend it!

Skip If You Love Reacher. Really disappointing

No more Reacher. Soooo sad that the real reacher is no longer readable. Lee and son just can’t do it anymore. 😢

Lights are On but Reacher Ain’t Home. Shame on me, I tried it again and now feel fooled. I don’t begrudge Lee giving a lucrative franchise to his brother, he’s more then earned the right to do as he pleases but the dumbing down of Reacher is a painful read and a powerful experience of loss. He now thinks out loud, telegraphs his moves, and is no longer smarter than anyone. The dialog devolved from whip-smart to til tok. The plot pacing is a shambolic meandering mess, a drudgery of patched together writing sessions aimed at describing a story without actually reading as one. The concise logic, precise Reacherisms, tight pacing of old now flows like a YA title for slow readers. I use to check how many pages were left, dreading the approaching ending, wanting more, now it is sitting in disbelief, hoping I can bail or somehow tap out. Like the improbability of an investigator in the story recognizing the effects of an exotic toad poisoning, I too feel the random freedom to write without design or coherent style and declare the death of a beloved character, and the rise of a zombie impersonator, pass the toad, I’m out.

“ secret “. I say try writing you r own book, negative 2 line reviews , doesn’t. Write your own book , save $10, and get your latti and critique that. John D.

The Secret. I am finished with the Reacher series. There is no way that Lee Child wrote this book. It bears no resemblance to the first 14 or so novels Child wrote on his own. It is full of meaningless hard to follow narrative that has nothing to do with the character so carefully developed over many years. I stopped 60 percent through the book.

The Secret. Terrible use of the Reacher franchise. Story line in and of itself was not bad. However using Reacher as par of it, the timeframe and the role he was playing are out of sync with what the majority of fans would have expected. Stay with the profile of Reacher .as it has been developed.

Enjoyable. Good book, but not as good as some of the earlier ones — not suspenseful.

Will the real Jack Reacher please step forward. I was so excited to see a new jack Reacher installation in the series but sadly disappointed in it. It was very boring and confusing as to time line of his life. Not the usual writing style for this series at all. Hope the next book returns us to the real Jack Reacher.

Probably the worst Jack Reacher novel. Just finished the latest Jack Reacher (The Secret). Probably his worst book, and I think I’ve read them all. Sad to say. This one really looks like two people wrote it, with different writing styles, all mixed together. I had to plod through it. Not exactly gripping or very suspenseful. I think this writing duo is burned out.

Another Reacher revenge novel. Great book, good flowing story and truly fantastic characters. I enjoyed each chapter.

Cpt. Reacher still a rule breaker.. I really enjoyed Army Reacher. Wouldn’t mind a new drifter Reacher and then maybe some more 110 MP Major Reacher.

Is this a Reacher Novel…... Boring, predictable, and not a normal Reacher novel…..

Least enjoyable. least enjoyable, and most absurd, jack reacher novel ever. almost like they phoned in in. and the chapters whet the 2 fem fatales take down for armed, experienced operatives was most ridiculous

Still a great read. This novel was more of a mystery than the traditional reacher as a bull in a china shop. Good mystery, light 0n the action. The characters lacked the development that was expected and Reacher seemed to be more background. Good story but not up to Jack Reacher standards.

Better. than the last two.

I liked it.. This was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I did like it. But I feel this series is ended. I do not believe it is going to be the same.

The worst Jack Reacher novel yet. I kept thinking to myself that these government spy/military/law enforcement guys are the most inept, stupid people on earth. What’s the definition of crazy? Doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome! Just plain lazy writing writing.

Disappointing. Having read many books in the series, this in my opinion is the least well written. Plot line is contrived, at time ridiculous. I would advise skipping this one.

Sad. Since Lee turned the reigns to his brother, the books are different and have worsened with each iteration. This one hardly had Reacher in it and focused on the assassin sisters far too much. I've read every Reacher book, and they are far and away my favorites in the genre, but as sad as it is, the series is dead under Andrew Child. Other series were able to make the change to a new author (Vince Flynn/Kyle Mills) well, but it's time to have Lee come back or hand the reigns to someone else cause it is not working.

A true “nothing burger”. I am a dedicated Reacher fan, having read every book in the series thus far. Prior to purchase I found a lot of reviews by other die hard fans that expressed extreme disappointment with this latest addition to the Reacher series. But, I decided to make my own decision and needed to read it to be certain. I am certain - this one is a dud. About the only Reacher elements that remained true to theme were Reacher’s slo-mo fight scenes that have him defeating 4-5 assailants all heavily armed and surrounding him. Second, were the minimalist descriptions of hotels/cars/meals/just about anything. Unfortunately, that got somewhat overused in this book and left me with the feeling that every character/location/item of importance had the same value as a one dimension black and white economy sized Dodge Dart. Ok - enough said or written here. If you are a devoted fan, either skip this one or wait I until it drops into the $1.99 slot. If you have heard about then Reacher series and always wanted to do a try read - go back to the first book written instead. You will not be disappointed and when you finally reach this book in the series, it probably will only cost you $1.99 to be disappointed.

Reacher pale shadow. I love the Reacher books! I’ve read the whole series at least twice. But this book is a mere shadow of the rest. Reacher seems like a bit player in his own book. There is not a character to connect with or root for. And the stoic, bare clarity of the first ~15 books is no longer present. The mystery and attraction of the original Reacher is gone. I’m sorry, we had high hopes, but these new books are not written like what we came to love. I cannot recommend them and will not be reading the series any further. Sad loss.

Marvelous!. He did it again, I was hoooooked!!

Old story re-write?. As is the case, with every reacher novel, it was great, but it reminded me a lot of a previous novel called night class.

Word Salad. Too wordy

So weak. Weak. Lee’s brother can’t hold a candle to Lee’s writing.

Good book. Good book !! I have read better!!

Don’t waste your money. Pathetic! A five year old could write a better book. I have paid for and read every Lee Child book. I will NEVER give him another dollar! The plot line is good. But the lazy construction of how Reacher deduces the movements and motivations of the protagonists is insulting. I want my money back!

The Secret. Lee Child. Roberta and Veronica Samson throw a heart attack patient out of a hospital window. They are avenging the way their father was treated by people only interested in the two most powerful motivators in the history of civilization. Power and money. What ensues is an extremely fast paced and well written story full of intrigue, deceit and payback. An excellent read!! my highest recommendation!!

Very good.. I really liked the book..

Not Lee Child, not Reacher. It is impossible to express how poorly written this book is. Read a sample, then read a page from any of the first eight in the series. Mysteries should have a rhythm. Usually the fights, discoveries, shocking results are the exclamation points at the end of a paragraph or a chapter. The extraordinary amount of bloodshed is sprayed around with no particular point, and I’m not squeamish. It’s just such a waste. Reacher would never approve.

One of the better ones!. It had a interesting ending. So many Reacher tales are the same. Would recommend, does not have to be read in order either in my opinion.

Reacher is awesome. Jack Reacher has been my favorite since his first book. I wait anxiously each year for another. The Reacher television series is my favorite series with the new star. I never could see Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher !!

Not as good. Lee has talent, enough to get me to read the last couple he is co- written, but, the quality has sadly declined in every way.

Better. Well written, keeps your interest in story. No mob bosses trying to take over city.

Solid but not evolutionary. Reacher solves a mystery and kills bad guys in the process. But this book, unlike others of the series, don't advance our understanding of Reacher's background or motivations. So, the book is solid, particularly for long-time readers of the series. For newcomers to the series, the lack of character development might be frustrating.

Another great read.. A Reacher classic!

A Mediocre Slog. Don’t bother reading this book. Seriously, do something productive with your life besides reading this flat, perfunctory, dull, and lifeless “story.” You’ve been warned.

This is a test. This is a test

Worst Reacher Book Yet. I’ve enjoyed every Jack Reacher book…until now. Thin plot, lousy characters and an overly complicated ending.

The Brothers Have Figured it Out. 5 Stars. Easily the best one since his brother came on board, it might also be the best prequel Reacher story too. This mystery was solid and interesting. We learned more about the young, slightly less violent, Reacher. Looks like the new “team” of brothers have it figured out. Excellent. Now, the wait begins.

The magic is gone.. .

Again a great story that you can’t put down!. A continued thriller where Lee Child takes on another mystery with Reacher who always comes to the end to divulge the most less likely criminal at whom we couldn’t suspect! Great story, plenty of of action and written in the way that Lee Child’s writing style makes you feel that you can literally see the images in your mind!

Short read. Was entertaining I guess but didn’t seem like the usual Reacher story, also not worth the price at 260 pgs.

The Secret. I am not sure what this was supposed to be but Jack Reacher it is not.

Don’t waste your time, money nor energy. Crap. There was no essence of Jack Reacher except for the beginning of the book.

Crap. This was really sad for a Reacher book.
