Ce livre relate la vie extraordinaire et aventureuse de Pierre Gemayel qui, de 1936 à sa mort en 1984, a joué un rôle capital au Liban. Il est mort debout, à sa tâche. Fondateur des Kataëb, principal parti libanais, député, ministre presque sans discontinuer de 1958 à sa disparition, ce Chrétien, admirateur du druze Fakhreddine II Maan, a contribué à la survie du Liban dans les circonstances les plus dramatiques. Principal artisan de l’indépendance de son pays, et de son entrée dans le monde moderne, il a voulu lui maintenir son caractère unique au Proche-Orient, d’état multiconfessionnel aux dix-sept confessions et communautés. Ce récit pathétique relate l’histoire d’un homme courageux, dont le destin exceptionnel fut de voir ses deux fils présidents de la République du Liban.
