Any 2022: en Jim i la Tessa viatgen a casa d'uns amics a Nova York. Durant la maniobra d'aterratge, l'avió té un accident, i tot i que ningú pateix ferides greus, la parella es troba amb una escena increïble: una apagada d'energia ha deixat el mon sencer en un estat de pausa, sense telèfons, sense pantalles; on abans hi havia llum, ara hi ha foscor; on abans regnava el soroll, ara tot és silenci. Sense mitjans de transport operatius, es veuen obligats a caminar per uns carrers deserts.
Un cop a casa dels amics, junts intenten entendre què ha passat i fins a quin punt el mon que tots coneixíem ha canviat, tant les certeses a les quals ens aferràvem com a societat com l'enemic, que ha passat de ser quelcom real i tangible (una guerra, una bomba) a ser una amenaça invisible, on les epidèmies de nous virus conviuen amb ciberatacs i criptomonedes.
