That Summer by Jennifer Weiner Book Summary

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
Named a Notable Work of Fiction by The Washington Post

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Big Summer comes another “ideal beach read, full of secrets and complicated female friendships” (Cosmopolitan).

Daisy Shoemaker can’t sleep. With a thriving cooking business, full schedule of volunteer work, and a beautiful home in the Philadelphia suburbs, she should be content. But her teenage daughter can be a handful, her husband can be distant, her work can feel trivial, and she has lots of acquaintances, but no real friends. Still, Daisy knows she’s got it good. So why is she up all night?

While Daisy tries to identify the root of her dissatisfaction, she’s also receiving misdirected emails meant for a woman named Diana Starling, whose email address is just one punctuation mark away from her own. While Daisy’s driving carpools, Diana is chairing meetings. While Daisy’s making dinner, Diana’s making plans to reorganize corporations. Diana’s glamorous, sophisticated, single-lady life is miles away from Daisy’s simpler existence. When an apology leads to an invitation, the two women meet and become friends. But, as they get closer, we learn that their connection was not completely accidental. Who IS this other woman, and what does she want with Daisy?

From the manicured Main Line of Philadelphia to the wild landscape of the Outer Cape, written with Jennifer Weiner’s signature wit and sharp observations, That Summer is a “compelling, nuanced novel” (Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post) about surviving our pasts, confronting our futures, and the sustaining bonds of friendship.

Political nonsense. Shame on Jennifer Weiner to use a story about rape to preach her uninformed political views. Her character watched all of the Kavanaugh trial. Did she?! Every sane minded person knew it was a farce. Mrs. Ford’s own called upon witnesses said it didn’t happen. God forbid Jennifer Weiner used Harvey Weinstein as her lead example. He was tried, convicted, and sentenced to over 20 years in prison! Maybe it would have cost her a movie deal to offend him & his cronies? Shameful.

“That Summer” is that book you can’t forget. For those who can’t go to the outer cape of Massachusetts this summer, writer Jennifer Weirner’s newest book brings it to you along with a little bit of a mystery and lots of female friendships. The characters are so relatable that I felt like all of my new best buds had suddenly all moved away when the story ended. And I was frantic for a visit to catch up with all that they must be doing now. Just don’t read it on a empty stomach because the food descriptions will have you cooking faster than rewatching Martha Stewart holiday specials. The book had just enough of those to wet by appetite but not so much that I felt like I gained weight by the time I finished the story. Once you have read it, be prepared to want to buy a few extra copies to share with your real life friends so you will have someone ready to discuss the events of the book.

No vacation. Does not qualify as a fun summer read. Too political, negative and pointless. People read for enjoyment and relaxation and this provides neither.

Wow.. Learn to keep your misinformed opinion to yourself. Shameful

Couldn’t put it down!. I really loved this book. I felt like I was Olivia Benson trying to put all of the pieces together!

Boring. Apart from Weiner’s unnecessary preaching her political point of view, the book has no clarity. What was Diana trying to accomplish by befriending Daisy? This is never explained. Why did Weiner’s dribble on about Justice Kavanaugh but say nothing about Harvey Weinstein, R.Kelly, Bill Cosby etc. CONVICTED molesters - doesn’t fit her narrative? The novel is unforgivably dull, I found myself skimming pages to get to the end.

That Summer. A fast read and current subject, I enjoyed the character developments and the book

Ugh. So tedious. I couldn’t finish it.

Good easy read👌. Great summer read.

Boring. Imposible to finish

Could have been better. Over politicized read

Okay book. I’ve read all this authors books and this one was okay. The subject needs to be talked about but this book really dragged on. I almost didn’t finish the book

That Summer. I was enjoying this book until I read the part about Bret Kavanaugh. That ruined the book for me. Why didn’t the author talk about Harvey Weinstein or Epstein? I won’t ever purchase another one of her books.

Was good. Enjoyed Weiners cape cod setting

Typical woke view of the world. Nauseating and boring!

Good read with some unrealistic detail. A beach read with controversial detail. I like the story part of Diana, full of up and down, bitter and sweet. The Daisy part is a bit out of my world. For example, she needs her daughter to wake her up by quoting Ipson’s doll house. I am from China. One hundred years ago, Chinese woman read this play and they walked out their chamber to school and work. This is 2021. And there is still American woman that completely depends their life on their husband?? Are American woman supposed to be more independent than woman from rest of the world? The other detail not convincing is how Diana became more alert after the terrible incident. But people don’t drastically change. And she became wise over the years, which is not a natural change because people don’t change. Anyway, I enjoyed the book these unrealistic detail.

Not a favorite. I honestly didn’t enjoy this book as I found it repetitive and too predictable.

That summer. Don’t waste your money. Pointless and overwrought.

Why?. I’m reading a nice story about an underage girl who is a nanny for the summer, and all of a sudden she’s visiting a sex toy shop and “experimenting” with the shower wand. Then it’s back to the nice story. I don’t understand the point? I won’t read on to see what other rubbish is in store. That Summer is my first and last Jennifer Weiner book.

Disappointing. Very juvenile story line. Might appeal to adolescent girls.

Wish i wouldn't have purchased. I really enjoyed Big Summer, so i bought this one thinking it would be interesting too.. It was predictable, and honestly felt like an easy grab with things in America politically.
