Publicada pela primeira vez no Brasil e escrita pelo alemão Gustav Mayer, esta biografia traz um poderoso relato sobre a vida e obra de Friedrich Engels (1820-1895), um dos criadores do socialismo científico.
Passando pelos principais eventos de sua vida, Mayer descreve a infância de Engels, sua vida na academia, seu rompimento com a democracia burguesa, seu encontro e amizade com Karl Marx e a importante publicação de O manifesto comunista em 1848. O biógrafo também traz nuances de sua relação com a família, seu trabalho na indústria, publicações e organizações para qual escreveu e militou, até sua morte em Londres aos 75 anos.
Publicado originalmente em 1930, em dois tomos, Mayer apresentou em língua inglesa uma segunda versão da biografia em 1936, mais acessível e enxuta. É essa a versão que chega ao Brasil, em comemoração ao bicentenário de Engels, comemorado dia 28 de novembro de 2020.
