The Forever Home by Sue Watson Book Summary

‘Wow!!! What an absolute cracker of a book!!!… I just loved everything about it… An absolutely addictive page turner that kept my heart in my throat on the edge of the seat… A compelling, page turning, mind blowing psychological thriller.’ Bookworm86 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

You thought you’d always be safe there… you were wrong.

Carly had thought they’d always live there. The beautiful Cornish cliffside house they’d taken on as a wreck, that Mark had obsessively re-designed and renovated – a project that had made him famous. It was where they’d raised their children, where they’d sat cosily on the sofa watching storms raging over the sea below. It was where they’d promised to keep each other’s secrets…

Until now. Because Mark has fallen in love. With someone he definitely shouldn’t have. Someone who isn’t Carly. And suddenly their family home doesn’t feel like so much of a safe haven.

Carly thinks forever should mean forever though: it’s her home and she’ll stay there. Even the dark family secrets it contains feel like they belong to her. But someone disagrees. And, as threats start to arrive at her front door, it becomes clear, someone will stop at nothing. Because someone wants to demolish every last thing that makes Carly feel safe. Forever.

An utterly unputdownable psychological thriller about what lies are hidden in the most beautiful homes. Perfect for fans of Date Night, Gone Girl and The Woman in the Window.

Full of surprises!. Sue Watson pulls you in from the first page of The Forever Home. Carly is waiting for her husband Mark at their twenty fifth anniversary party. You know something is not right but you have no idea how spectacularly it will all go wrong. In the middle of the party, Carly learns that her husband Mark is leaving her for Erin, his pregnant girlfriend, the daughter of Carly’s best friend and a friend of her own daughter. As if that weren’t bad enough, Mark is the star of The Forever Home, a reality TV show that was first imagined by Carly to feature renovations on their coastal home that she inherited. The show became very popular and is now about to be sold to American TV. They will make millions if they can remain Carly and Mark, the charming Anderson family. Can Carly do this? Can she keep Mark’s secrets and her own? And how will she explain the cute handyman who is spending so much time at her house? This psychological thriller is full of surprises! Just remember that things are not always what they seem but even if you do, you won’t see the final twist coming. 5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Sue Watson for this ARC.

Completely blew my mind!. Ladies and gentlemen, Sue Watson has done it again! Of course, by ‘done it again,’ I mean she has completely blown my mind with her writing! I don't know how she does it; with each new release, I'm left thinking, WOW, this has been her best one yet! It never fails; each time I *think* I have it all figured out and practically lose my mind in anticipation of finally getting it right, then BOOM! Just a snap, crackle, and pop, and I'm all twisted up again! “The Forever Home” is no exception! The Anderson’s have always been the picture-perfect family on screen but what goes on behind the scenes tells a darker tale. Our story starts with a 47-year-old wife and mother, Carly, trying to hold it all together while playing hostess at her and her husband Mark’s 25th wedding anniversary when everything comes crashing down. While his trysts weren't exactly new to her, the latest went a bit too far. In the end, Carly finds a way to not only fight for herself but also do what she's always done best, fight for her children and her forever home. While a few of the characters were quite despicable, Carly was one to root for. She wasn't flawless by any means; she had her secrets, blow-ups, and vices, sure, but she was also relatable and kind-hearted - a loving mother and maternal figure through and through. Sometimes as mothers, we get so preoccupied taking care of life’s details and putting out the fires that we tend to overlook the fact that kids catch on to far more than we give them credit for, both the good and the bad. Carly's internal monologue of her mothering journey, in a hindsight perspective, helps bring her character to life and tie the story together in more ways than one. I loved how there were absolutely zero loose ends in “The Forever Home,” the fact that everyone was made to look suspect at one point or another, and that the final twist was just as jaw-dropping as I’d hoped it would be! I have honestly and voluntarily reviewed this title.

Very good read.. Twist turner nust read

Predictably and thrashy. I’m afraid this book was written in a mills and boon fashion whist trying to throw in a psychological twist which was so predictable. It reminded me if the TV movies one watches on afternoon telly!

Just brilliant!. Sue Watson has done it again. Just brilliant! Sue has this knack of writing thrillers where I just think, one more chapter, and before I know it, I have read most of the book in one sitting so I just continue! Never mind the housework, I need to finish the book! Carly and Mark appear to have the perfect marriage to everyone, especially in the world of television, where their “Forever Home” has become a famous tv series. Now the US want to continue the series, which means a massive financial deal for them. Unfortunately, Mark is not all he seems and he falls in love with another woman. This is where secrets and lies threaten to be exposed. Without going into the storyline too much, can I just suggest you read it. I am sure you won’t be disappointed. If you have read Sue’s books before, you will know why I recommend this. If you haven’t, then give it a go. The characters are all very believable, which is another thing Sue does really well. Carly is an absolute gem but I am not sure how she has put up with Mark for 25 years. I certainly wouldn’t. As for his new lover, she was the most annoying character and I found myself instantly disliking her and getting frustrated with both her and Mark. The story dealt well with family relationships, not just romantic ones, but parent / child relationships and friendships too. Who can be trusted? Who has been keeping secrets for many years? Can you really trust those closest to you? There was a surprise ending, which I most certainly hadn’t seen coming, but I was really pleased with. Thank you to netgalley, Bookouture and the author for an arc.

Great. Loved it

Predictable. I had to skim read this to get through it. Some nice aspects of character building and dealt with some serious themes (abuse, friendship etc), but generally predictable and long winded.

Page Turner. I enjoyed this book but the end doesn’t live up to the build up. Excessive use of the word “giggling” when describing characters you’re supposed to like, making me get annoyed with them.

Fabulous read!. This book is fabulous! I’ve never been so angry for a character as I was for leading lady, Carly; and I loved that I was angry. How blooming well entertaining and gripping. This beautiful forever home had been featured endlessly on TV in a show presented by the Andersons, with Mark the husband being the main feature. On the surface, life seems brilliant with their success envied by all, but this description of the house made me think of the relationships that played out through the book. ‘Breakable, the foundations moving all the time, miniscule, but real nonetheless.’ I love this underlying rumble that nothing ever stays the same even if you can’t see or feel the changes. Time moves even if we want to stay where we are forever. We just hope that these movements don’t destroy us. I loved how the cracks in the building were reflected in the cracking relationships. As for the location, it couldn’t be better. Who doesn’t love a dreamy seaside town? Looe was perfect and there was a real sense of setting. The sea crashing against the rocks; saltiness in the air; the cutesy cafes. Let me stop... I’m not describing a romance at the seaside here, this book will have you clutching it like you’re strangling it. That’s how emotional this journey was. I was so on team Carly throughout. Without saying too much, I can tell you that those blue skies build up to a great big thunderclap which kept me on the edge of my seat. For thrill seekers who love it scary, for people who like books that delve into the ugliest sides of human nature and for an unforgettable ending... you need to read The Forever Home!

poorly written. I almost didn’t bother finishing this book but I’ll give it one star for motivating me to see it through to a conclusion. Characters were not believable & plot was hard to take seriously.

A brilliant read. The Forever Home by the amazing talent that is Sue Watson is a gripping and riveting story that follows the life of golden couple and celebrities Carly and Mark. Known for their DIY television show and their remarkable ocean cliffside home in Cornwall, their marriage is the envy of all. But behind closed doors, it is a very different story…a very different one indeed. As with so many other books that I have read this year, The Forever Home is another one that kept me up all night reading it. I tried to put it down at one point to go to sleep, but nope the compulsion to keep reading was just too strong. Sue Watson really knows how to weave a tale to keep your attention and hold you hostage. The are a few characters in the story and are a mix of likeable and unlikeable. It’s fair to say that Mark is an absolute jerk and I disliked him right from the get go. My feelings were reinforced all the more the story progressed. I am not a violent person at all but, he did make me want to reach into my Kindle and sock him one! I liked Carly and felt for her being married to such a doucebag and was empathic to the secret that she has been living with, which Mark holds over her to get what he wants. But Carly isn’t the only one hiding a secret and if Mark’s is exposed will ruin his squeaky clean image. The house is also a character within itself and as I was reading the book I was completely under its spell. Sue Watson has done such a brilliant job bringing it to life through writing that is so very vivid, you feel like you are there experiencing it as the characters do. This book absolutely rocks and I think it is Sue Watson’s best work to date! Well plotted and executed, it is also twisty, addictive and with a jaw dropping fist pumping finale, If you are a fan of psychological thrillers, you do not want to let this one pass you by. It is definitely a must read and will be part of my best books for 2021!
