The Strain by Guillermo del Toro & Chuck Hogan Book Summary

“Part The Andromeda Strain, part Night of the Living Dead.” —Salon.com

The visionary creator of the Academy Award-winning Pan's Labyrinth and a Hammett Award-winning author bring their imaginations to this bold, epic novel about a horrifying battle between man and vampire that threatens all humanity. The first installment in a thrilling trilogy.

A Boeing 777 arrives at JFK and is on its way across the tarmac, when it suddenly stops dead. All window shades are pulled down. All lights are out. All communication channels have gone quiet. Crews on the ground are lost for answers, but an alert goes out to the CDC. Dr. Eph Goodweather, head of their Canary project, a rapid-response team that investigates biological threats, gets the call and boards the plane. What he finds makes his blood run cold.

In a pawnshop in Spanish Harlem, a former professor and survivor of the Holocaust named Abraham Setrakian knows something is happening. And he knows the time has come, that a war is brewing . . .

So begins a battle of mammoth proportions as the vampiric virus that has infected New York begins to spill out into the streets. Eph, who is joined by Setrakian and a motley crew of fighters, must now find a way to stop the contagion and save his city—a city that includes his wife and son—before it is too late.

An epic battle for survival begins between man and vampire in The Strain—the first book in a heart-stopping trilogy from one of Hollywood’s most inventive storytellers and a critically acclaimed thriller writer. Guillermo del Toro, the genius director of the Academy Award-winning Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy, and Hammett Award-winning author Chuck Hogan have joined forces to boldly reinvent the vampire novel. Brilliant, blood-chilling, and unputdownable, The Strain is a nightmare of the first order.

Screen play. Unfortunately Hogan and Del Toro were not able to do what Justin Cronin so aptly did do, which was take the genre beyond vampires. What began as a potential fun read, quickly deteriorated into a screen play better pitched in a producers office than between two covers. Hogan is fortunate to have Del Toros name attached, otherwise this book would not have a sequel, fortunate for Hogan, not for us. Stay tuned for the movie adaptation which is sure to include The names Jerry, and Brucheimer.

A gripper as far as horror and action, but not great literature.. Story is slow to start, but once it gets going, it never slows down again. Not much to the story or characters. Pretty formulaic and predictable, and the writing starts to suffer as it gets close to the climax. But still a fun read if you just want good, juicy people-getting-chased-by-monsters fare.

Absolute page turner. Each chapter is a well paced story all it's own. Great literature and long awaited in this market of shelves flooded of romantic teen stories.

The strain. I loved the book, didn't give it 5 stars because it wasn't my favorite book ever. Definitely a good read.

Excellent. Amazing

Good book. Quick read. Very good but not as good as The Passage trilogy. If you liked The Passage and The Twelve you will like this trilogy.

Excellent Read. The details are remarkable ... Truly reminds me of a Stephen King read ... Is there a sequel? To complete the hang at the end?

Simply amazing.. A riveting page turner. A must read.

awsome. once you begin to read, the story just grips you till the end

Not your lovable vamps. Very creative and scary take on vampires. Looking forward to the next book!

The Strain. Very good read. Recommend.

The Strain. Typical Del Toro strangeness. Good opener to the trilogy.

A vampire series that will keep you awake at night. After the second reading (which was needed so I could get into the 3rd book adequately) I continue to be amazed at how this books grips the reader's mind with its fright, detail, and thrilling drama! You can get the details of the book's plot from many other reviews, so that is not where I'm going to go. Instead, let me explain that I found this book both incredibly gripping in its narrative, as well as gripping in its horror. Yes, the horror of narrative wouldn't leave me alone, as all I could do was find out the next frightening scene and read about the horrific attacks: stories with apocalyptic airs around them always have gripped me to no end, mainly because of their ability to be one of the few things to truly scare me. That being said, the authors have laid out very interesting characters, whom they go into depth about to a certain extent (one where the reader knows many of their feelings and failures) but not too much where as to cross into creating a complete emotional connection between the character and the reader. Again, I love this book and cannot wait to read The Fall next!

Great idea, hu-hum execution. I love the idea of the vampires but it was the slow, go no where side stories that turned me off.

Borrrrrring. Lame attempts at terror with a much overused plot. Read Dracula, it's scarier.

Difficult to put down. Not my usual reading interest, but needed to try to read before watching the tele. Version. Cool descriptions of the demons as they turn and really pretty scary stuff!

The Strain. Superb vampire thriller! Suspenseful, unpredictable, and an uniquely intriguing, this is not the same old vampire tale you've read before. Like Stephen King meets Anne Rice meets Clive Barker.

Great read. Liz32906. I enjoyed this story.I always said a good written tale makes you suspend disbelief. This is a good example. This vampire book does not suck😷😊 !

A True Vampir story!. Unlike so many of the romanticized modern takes on Stoker's original, The Strain is finally a return to truly fear-worthy vampires! The only downside here, if it is one at all, is that it is not a "true" stand-alone novel. This of course means getting sucked in for a wild ride that is, great-fully, not over and done with in one too-quick stroke. Happy Hunting!

Cool book. Great read

The Strain. It is a rare vampire tale that adds to the genre. Well-imagined and well-told.

The Strain. Chilling...I couldn't put it down!

Great Book. The writing is ok but the story is amazing. The details and the mythology is really good. I am enjoying the TV show and the book is goo at supporting it.

The Strain-must read horror. I couldn't put it down. For anyone who loves genuine horror this is a good old-fashioned must read. I loved it!

Couldn't put it down. Great read can't wait to read "the fall"

Awesome take on vampires. Pretty good book, with a unique twist on the typical vampire stories mixed with the (now timely, in hindsight) outbreak of what people think is a deadly pandemic. Picture Dracula, Blade, The Andromeda Strain, and CSI combined into a single story, and you have The Strain.

Mediocre at best. Predictable. Characters were dull. This book dragged on...

Greatness!. One of the best vampire books I've read! The author puts a whole new spin on what we thought we knew about the creatures of the night!! A must read!

Superb vampire tale.... Not your typical vampire tale by any means. Imagine a vampire that is more beast then the romantic notion we currently think of. The attention to detail, the settings & the human emotion all make this so worthy of reading.

Entertaining Enough. While nothing special this book is a quick read sure to entertain. If your looking for something to provoke deep emotions or to inspire you, your looking in the wrong place. However, if you want a book to give you a few cheap thrills your good to go. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading book #2.

Explosive. On the edge of your seat, never dull, if you like vampire books, this is a keeper. Have got to get book two. Need to know what happens next. Apparently there are three books to this trilige.

Pleased. It was a slow starter, and I wasn't sure of my reaction to these particular vampires. But the book and the beasts themselves grew on me. By the time I finished I was thinking "what a good read", and readying myself to get the next in the series.

Great!. From the first page this book had me. I have had few books draw me in that quickly. It was hard to out down and I was anxious to get back to it when I had to quit reading.

Pretty fascinating.. This book treats a vampire apocalypse as if it were a biological disaster. It's told from the point of view of CDC agents trying to stop the spread of a plague. Pretty unique.

Great book. Lot's of fun and suspense. I'm excited to continue the series with the fall.

Riveting, but not Rocket Science.. This was an engaging summer read. I have long been a fan of Guillermo del Toro’s monsters and his fingerprints were all over this story line, which was co-written by Chuck Hogan. I could almost picture the creatures in the story but I’m sure Guillermo would have crafted them further into things of hideousness in film. While this wasn’t rocket science, it was nonetheless enjoyable and thrilling reading. I’m eager to read the subsequent books of the trilogy.

Interesting. I found this book to be a fresh twist on the whole vampire experience. The originality of the vampires and the characters involved make this book stand out above other vampire stories. I was left wanting more. Thank goodness it is a trilogy.

Simply Awesome. Great book. Jcr716

Must read!!!!. Hard to put down....great plot....suspense is extremely intense

New look at vampires. This trilogy is great, even in the times of over-done, teeny-bopper, sexy vampire stories this has a great background and doesn't overdo any sort of love story, great read, great excitement and action, great thrill ride of a book!

The Strain. Same old vampire story, no, badly written same old vampire story. The author should stick to directing and let real writers take care of authoring novels.

Great story!. The kind of book I'd love to see go to the big screen!

Woah. What a great book! Extremely suspenseful and keeps you at the edge of your seat. The author submerges you into the scenes with descriptive details and captivates your imagination-- that makes it so hard to put the ibook down. Definitely not like any vampire book I've ever written. Can't wait to read the next one!

the Strain. Scary, intense, a page turner! The ending was a hum dinger, much better than most of the other vampire books. Old fashioned with a modern turn.

Love the book!. I first saw the TV series the first one and now the book! I can't wait for the continued tv series and now I will read book two! And three! Good writing and easy read. I shall read them again!

Awesome. Best book I've read in a while!!!

So trite!. It's very, very banal, there are a lots of the same stories, like Resident Evil and so on. Nothing new.

The strain. I don't usually read this stuff. Vampires? been there? This was really well done. Intelligent, fast-paced. A page turner. Looking for sequel.

Gripping, chilling, and an easy read. This book is absolutely amazing! I read it in 2013. I had to set it down at one point because the suspense was so intense! I would absolutely suggest this to anyone who loves horror genre!!

Very well done. I thought this robe very well written. I have not been this engaged in many a year. i did enjoy this very much. I look forward to reading the other books written by the authors. Thanks, Patty
