In Stitches by Nick Edwards Book Summary

The true story of an A&E doctor that became a huge word-of-mouth hit.

Forget what you have seen on Casualty or Holby City, this is what it is really like to be working in A&E.

Dr Nick Edwards writes with shocking honesty about life as an A&E doctor. He lifts the lid on government targets that led to poor patient care. He reveals the level of alcohol-related injuries that often bring the service to a near standstill. He shows just how bloody hard it is to look after the people who turn up at the hospital door.

But he also shares the funny side – the unusual ‘accidents’ that result in with weird objects inserted in places they really should have ended up – and also the moving, tragic and heartbreaking.

It really is an unforgettable read.

About the author

Dr Nick Edwards is an Accident and Emergency doctor working in the UK. He kept a blog under the name of Angry Doctor for a while until his criticisms of the management of the NHS drew unwanted attention and for the sake of his career he removed it from the web.

Brilliant. A funny and honest account of a job we all have preconceived ideas about. Loved it!

In stitches. A wonderful read. I agreed with all this doctor said. A very talented modest genuinely caring doctor who happens to be a very witty writer. Highly recommend it

Stitched up!. Fantastic laugh a minute book! Great perspective of accident and emergency! And yes I fully agree with you, don't come to accident or emergency if you don't meet either of those criteria! And all your nhs politics made me laugh!! Great....

Really Good. I really enjoyed this book, I don't usually read this sort of stuff but I'm so glad I did. It is well written and worth a read

In stitches. Dr NickEdwards... brilliant. Summarised why I love and hate the NHS at times but why I go to work each day. Fantastic read.

Excellent!. Really light hearted, funny, easy read book. Very enjoyable.

👏. Informative and factual, some parts were hilarious.

Very good. Most enjoyable, amusing, saddening and dark at times but nicely balanced overall.

Dissapointing. Just a rant about the NHS, nothing like Confessions of a GP/Male Nursr

In Stitches. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the short stories were so diverse & easy to read. It's such a shame that we will be losing the NHS to this Conservative government. This book reaffirmed my appreciation & love for the NHS, we are losing a great institution.

Good read. This book is a good read for medical staff, funny in places but more just to reiterate problems everyone thinks but this author has made public. I thought this was a bit more 'ranty' than confessions of a GP, but still on the whole a good read

Emma. Brilliant read I couldn't put it down :)

In stitch's. This book could have given us so much more insight as to a dr who works in a&e and the work they do the people they treat and their surroundings. Having worked in this area I must say i have read better by far and I'm v dissapointed. A waste of money and precious time.

Loved this book. An excellent read, giving the inside view of the NHS. As a nurse, I can recognise an awful lot of what Nick says as being true in my area too. I would definately recommend this as an easy read, as you can have a full story in each chapter, which is nice. I heartedly agree that the NHS should get all patients notes online and available all of the time - I get so fed up at admitting people in the night and not having the pertinent info about risks and meds at the time. Thank you for taking the time to write down your views/experiences.

Very entertaining. Brilliant book

In stitches. I very rarely go to A&E but the times I have been I was seen quickly & efficiently, this book certainly opens your eyes & is very funny in parts & sad in others. We are incredibly lucky to have the NHS. buy this book, you won't be disappointed !

Great read very funny. Very funny book. Combination of the authors humorous rants, sad heart wrenching stories and what really goes on in a busy A&E department. Easy to pick up and read when you've hot a few minutes to spare.

Lainey. Read this book after reading confessions of a gp. Must say It is a fantastic read and has really opened my eyes to a & e. it's easy to see why the Nhs is in such a state when you've read about all the waste of resources and red tape and targets the staff have to put up with. I have the utmost admiration for all Nhs employees.

Hilarious. If you have worked in a hospital this is hilarious. If not, it is still a great giggle. Laughed out loud and loved it.

Love it!. After reading The confessions of a GP I downloaded this! So truthful and real. Perfect for people working in the Emergency services! Laughed out loud several times.

Very nice book. A quick look into a real life doctor's life.

You might be surprised.... A really interesting read. Opens your eyes to how frustrating doctors/nurses job can be at times. Also makes you appreciate the NHS in this country! Even if my local doctors surgery is a joke..!

Lots of laughs and memories!!. Loved the book!!being a critical care nurse made it more amusing than ever!!and brought back memories of many unforgettable patients!!

Blast from the past. An excellent read. Took me right back to my days as a nurse in ED (emergency department - new name for A & E) - the good times of "team building" in a quiet department, and the stresses of receiving a "blue light taxi" or "ambocab" (terms used to describe an unnecessary 999 call which cost lots more than a normal taxi!!!) only to find that the parents of the baby called 999 as the child "had a fever" which had miraculously disappeared before the ambulance arrived despite the baby being swaddled in a million blankets - incidentally, the parents had diagnosed this fever without even the most basic of thermometers - gggrrrrrrr! Loved this book and found myself wanting to be sitting with the author joining his rants about the politics of healthcare and the inappropriateness of a large amount of attendances by patients to anywhere other than their GP, and the lack of community and social care which finds me on a daily basis washing and medicating patients who could be more safely and comfortably cared for within the community setting and end up with other complications of their admission or depressed due to the length of time they are isolated from family and friends and daily life (most wards offer a maximum of 4 hrs visiting per day). Could not put this book down - even downloaded it onto my iPhone so I could pick it up and read it wherever I was when I had a minute to read :)

Not bad!. I've read meat of these types of books and found this to be the least interesting of them. Not a bad read but others are better like confessions of a GP by DR Ben daniels?

Excellent!. An excellent read, great insight into the REAL NHS! Well done in such a great read!

Fantastic!. As a radiographer in the NHS I completely relate to this. A must read!

Great!!. Brilliant book!

In stitches. Very funny and heartfelt. Makes you stop and truly value this 'free' service.

In Stitches. This book is FANTASTIC I have giggled all the way through. As I'm a nurse I can say what this chap writes about I agree with 100 percent, most stories happen at every hospital. The 3hr 59min rule in A&E yep happens at my hospital. The patients that touch my heart EVERY day make my job easier and to get a thank you that is heartfelt is what it's all about. People are to quick to complain about the NHS but try working in it or being a patient and seeing what we have to work against and with. This man needs to be living in 10 Downing Street. Loved reading this book and am recommending it to all the NHS workers I know. Brill read and on every page just wanted to click a button that said 'like' or 'so true' xxx

Excellent. Outstanding read, funny, easy going, but something every uk tax payer should read.

Editing needed. Very interesting insight into the workings of A&E, some very good case histories. BUT far to much moaning and politics much of it repeated. A lot of the grumbling needs serious editing. Also unnecessary pandering to the "carry on era" we all know Drs and Nursers eye each other up, don't we all, but the childish sexist nonsense was unnecessary.

Rant alert. Almost every chapter has some rant about the limitations of the NHS. Got fed up of it very quickly.

A selection of anecdotes. Every politician looking to improve the NHS, or believing they already have, should read this. It’s quite an easy book to read, as all the chapters are very short, about one anecdote each. There is some repetition, but should be easy enough for politicians to learn from

You'll learn a lot and laugh a lot!. I have learnt so much about a doctors life in a&e from this book, especially the difficulties they can face, but it also had me laughing out loud many times. I hope this author writes more books on his life in medicine as I'd love to read more! A bargain price for the best book I've read in a long time.

Good insight for non NHS people. Just finished this book and it was a great read as I was on holiday and looking for something to keep me entertained which it certainly did. I couldn't put it down. The author gives a very good insight to the problems faced by NHS staff in A&E everyday and not just by undesirable patients but the red tape that is in place and actually obstructs the staff from doing their jobs to the best of their ability. If I ever end up in A&E and the doctor looks a bit stressed I'll remember what I have read in this book and have sympathy as these guys do really do an amazing job in difficult circumstances at times.

Made me laugh. I work in the NHS and I have read two doctors books now and this one made me laugh do much! I know what goes on in the NHS and it's about time people wrote about what staff have to put up with and cut costing and it's a shame because patient care is being affected by this. I love read these doctors books and now Im on a different one. 10 out of 10 for this book :-)

Brilliant read!. One of the best books of this genre. Hilarious but serious.

In stitches. Very funny and amusing.

Excellent read!. I read this over a week or two on my travels to and from work! Makes you really appreciate how much doctors have to deal with and how much they do for us! I will definitely recommend!

Great book. Yet another interesting book And incite to the goings on of doctors just show they aren't all robots with no feelings.

In Stitches. Loved this book, should have a weekly blog!

Love love love!. Absolutely loved this book, very funny but also relevant issues. This, along with Confessions of a GP and Blood Sweat and Tea are my fave books of the mo. Wish I could find more like this!

In Stitches. This book was absolutely amazing. I loved all of the funny stories and it was interesting as I want to be an A&E doctor when I grow up.

Brill!!!!!!!. Absolute fantastic read! So blunt yet so funny!

Not In Stitches. I bought this book after reading a book written by a GP that consisted of a series of short stories of mostly amusing incidents with patients. This book was mentioned at the end as being similar (although the GP writer did quip that this wasn't as good). Boy was he right! While having read it I now feel much better educated about how A&E departments work and in particular about how certain government initiatives cause problems to health practitioners, I am so relieved to have finished the book because it cam across as a non-stop rant. Dr Edwards clearly has observations to make about government initiatives that I'm sure will help improve such initiatives in the future, but a writer of witty books full of amusing anecdotes he is not.

In stitches. Really enjoyed this book even though I had only lived in the UK for 18 months I knew some of what the author was trying to express with his frustration of the health system. I live in Australia and my family and I are extremely lucky that our health system is nothing like what the uk has to deal with. Thank god !

In Stitches. Enlightening info with many laugh out loud moments. Enjoyable read start to finish. Great for traveling/commuting or if bad luck has u waiting or recuperating in hospital. Highly recommend.

"Nurses trying constantly to flirt with you". Dream on, you self-righteous knob. Typical Doctor 🙄
