The Lock Artist by Steve Hamilton Book Summary

Steve Hamilton steps away from his Edgar Award-winning Alex McKnight series to introduce a unique new character, unlike anyone you've ever seen in the world of crime fiction.

"I was the Miracle Boy, once upon a time. Later on, the Milford Mute. The Golden Boy. The Young Ghost. The Kid. The Boxman. The Lock Artist. That was all me.

But you can call me Mike."

Marked by tragedy, traumatized at the age of eight, Michael, now eighteen, is no ordinary young man. Besides not uttering a single word in ten years, he discovers the one thing he can somehow do better than anyone else. Whether it's a locked door without a key, a padlock with no combination, or even an eight-hundred pound safe ... he can open them all.

It's an unforgivable talent. A talent that will make young Michael a hot commodity with the wrong people and, whether he likes it or not, push him ever close to a life of crime. Until he finally sees his chance to escape, and with one desperate gamble risks everything to come back home to the only person he ever loved, and to unlock the secret that has kept him silent for so long.

The Lock Artist is the winner of the 2011 Edgar Award for Best Novel and a 2011 Alex Award winner.

Deeply satisfying. One of the best books I’ve ever read. Profound, tangible depth in the main character. A rare combination of emotional depth, and yet often understated. Deeply satisfying.

Best book I have ever read. No exaggeration. This is the best book ever. This book is very well writin and a real page turner.

Terrific read. One of the best books I've read. I read a lot of Clancy and WEB Griffin and I picked this one up on a friend's recommendation. I loved every page. Just the right length to keep the story lines fresh and the suspense high. Love the way the author wrote the backstory in with the whole plot. Very refreshing. You can't puck the book down in the last 100 pages.

Amazing. This is definitely one of the best novels I have ever read. The special talent Mike has, the romance, and the dirty society are knitted together seamlessly. It is a must read book. I really forward to the currently developing movie on this story.

Amazing book. One of my favorite reads Really unique character and story line

A pleasure. This book was truly entertaining and well written.

The Lock Artist. Great read....different story for a change

Great Read. The title was a bit off-putting at first, but by the end of the book, it is totally fitting. Michael is an interesting, complex character, even though, for most of the book, he is still a teenager. His life is taken out of his hands when he is eight, and it seems that each time he meets someone, he loses a bit more control. There are numerous points in the story where he could take it back, but he doesn’t. The fact that Hamilton waits until the latter part of the story to reveal Michael’s childhood trauma keeps the tension high. The question of whether he will ever speak again and about whether he will finally make a righteous decision keeps the reader transfixed throughout the narrative. The only criticism I have it the overuse of the time sequence shuffling, which is a bit hard to follow sometimes. Although Hamilton clearly sets up the time and place for each chapter, I felt my emotions sometimes were not allowed to follow a particular story line when suddenly I was jerked to another timeframe and different circumstances. Otherwise, this was an excellent book.

Great read. Enjoyed reading this very much. Going back and forth in time kept you guessing until near the end and then a great ending. I'm going to read more by this author.

Definitely read this book!. Thoroughly enjoyed this light but engaging read. Definitely one of the best I've read lately! Drew me in and kept me turning the pages with a great story, good dialogue, and characters that were interestingly developed and relatable. It's been awhile since I've read a book that I literally did not want to put down, and this one finally broke my bad book slump!! Read it, and chances are you won't regret it.

Gripping. I could not put this one down. The writing is moving, yet chilling and incredibly well paced to the very last page.

The Lock Artist. I love his books and not just because I'm from MI. Once I start reading them I hate to put it down! I hope he writes many more!!!

Awesome mystery. Interesting settings and believable characters make this mystery a winner.

Yea. Awesome!!

The lock artist. One of my favorite books this year. Highly recommend it. Great story and it keeps you going.

Excellent!. A rather audacious story structure - the author pretty much begins the book by telling you the ending and yet manages to produce an engrossing, thrilling novel. Especially reccommended to those who find safecracking fascinating, as well as those who are a sucker for coming-of-age stories.

Lock Artist. Maybe the best book ever. Love, murder, suspense, and a boy you fall in love with. I am in awe. Though you are told the ending on the first page, the trip there is so worth the ride...

Biggiebig. I haven't read a book in awhile and I can't put this book down I get in trouble in class and everything cuz I LOVE this book!

A great read; tough to put down. I enjoyed "A Stolen Season", "Ice Run", and "A Cold Day in Paradise", all by the same author. All were very good and entertaining detective novel kind of books. This book however, really draws you in. After all, the storyteller is a young man who cannot speak! The author jumps you around through time to chapters in his life, but never loses you in the multiple stories he weaves. A departure from the other works from this author that I have read, but in my view, his best yet!

The lock artist. Wonderful, twisty, interesting story. Well written, great read.

Enjoyable. First book I read of his and I loved every page!

The lock artist. What a fantastic read. I liken it to " Devil in the white city" as far to what happens next to keep you in suspense. This is my first read by this author. My next read will see if he is all he is cracked up to be. Stay tuned.

Definitely worth the read. Interesting characters, believable plot. Good mix of action, tension, coldness, warmth, and mystery. Keeps the pages turning.

Great book!. What an experience living in Mike's head! By the end of the book I felt like I was losing an old friend.

Tremdous and compelling story!. A great read, I read it in one day. Very well written with a compelling plot. Highly recommended!

Another tween romance novel. Starts out pretty good, suspenseful and an intriguing main character with a unique talent. But turns into a sappy teen romance novel quickly, and plot is replaced by introducing multiple characters and adjectives. This is a poor attempt at making a mediocre short story into a novel. Pass on it.

Finish this, I dare you. Really good beginning, really good ending. Middle part, like trying to swim through pancake batter.....and to stay awake while doing it. I made it because it was my last e book on the shelf, but it wasn't easy. Try it, go ahead.....it's your money.

The Lock. A great book to take for a week at the beach. I test drove it at Hatteras and found it very satisfying.

The Lock Artist.... This is the 1st book I have read by Mr. Hamilton. It was very well written. A good plot with well developed characters. The story of a boy who makes choices in life to survive. They aren't always the right ones. However, you can't help but feel for him. I will definitely read more by this author.

Best book on my shelf!!!!. This was the absolute neat book that I have ever read. Aimed for high school and higher age groups.

Much better than the plot suggested. I thought this couldn't be great because, how far could you take that plot? But I really loved this story! I've been picky lately too. I haven't found many good ones lately, but this was a page turner for sure.

GREAT. Nice plot cant wait to read more!
