Under the Eagle by Simon Scarrow Book Summary

In this first book of a new historical fiction series, a crack Roman legion invades Britain in this brazen tale of military adventure, political intrigue and heroism

It is the year 42 AD, and Centurion Macro, battle-scarred and fearless, is in the heart of Germany with the Second Legion, the toughest in the Roman army. Cato, a new recruit and the newly appointed second-in-command to Macro, will have more to prove than most. In a bloody skirmish with local tribes, Cato gets his first chance to prove that he's more than a callow, privileged youth. As their next campaign takes them to a land of unparalleled barbarity - Britain - a special mission unfolds, thrusting Cato and Macro headlong into a conspiracy that threatens to topple the Emperor himself.

Filled with the kind of historical details that brings the adventure to life, Simon Scarrow's Under the Eagle is destined to become a military fiction classic.

An enthralling read. Although not very accurate historically in regards to everyday life in a Roman legion, Scarrows writing style make for an entertaining read. A great start to the series, good characters, plenty of action & a good plot line. The way this book is written, it could be about any unit of British infantry in any war but by using a little imagination you can easily picture the characters, incidents & events depicted as being 1st century AD Roman army.

Lonewolf McQuaid. Excellent tale and well written. Good storyline pace and easy to follow.

Excellent Read. I have read countless series on Ancient Rome and it’s captivating legionnaires. That said most books in a series feature a sort of slower pace foundational setup in the first book. Under the Eagle is nothing of the sort. Introductions are indeed made to the primary players but the storyline is captivating and rich in both plot and detail. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series and am excited to see there will be so many more tales to follow beyond that.

Good stuff. A fast pace, fun read. Great characters, interesting storyline. One sour note, the open ending, way too open.

Good but not great. The first and last third of the book was good reading. I liked the characters, but the plot was just ok.
