Awfulness. I enjoyed the first book in this series - but one thousand pages into this one I could still not tell you who the characters were or what they wanted.

If you liked the first one. Prepare to be blown away. My second trip through the series, and I must say, unlike any other series I have read, sooooo much better the second time.

Overhyped. It’s such a strange book and series. The first book had more action and variety but the writing often times wasn’t accessible. This books writing did feel a bit more accessible but the story for me was much harder to follow. I’m still not sure who is battling who. The themes of this book are much darker and more disturbing than the previous book. I also really struggled to find likable characters in this book where there were plenty in the previous. I wish there was some joy in this series. Everything is so depressing and weighty there’s nothing to brighten the world.

Superior to the first in every way.. Erikson hit his stride starting with this book. Still among my favorites out of his 10 book series. It takes the mystery and complexity of Gardens of the Moon and applies it in a fashion that is better paced and less ambiguous while simultaneously building upon Gardens and answering past questions. It also includes one of the more tragic story lines in the series that is full of heartbreaking narratives. The cast includes familiar characters and many entirely new ones, all of whom are integral to the story and quite believable. If you finished Gardens then you owe it to yourself to see Erikson at his best.

Absolutely amazing!. For a while I have struggled in finding a series both well written as captivating; and this has surpassed my wildest expectations. Truly a great read and an amazing ride.

Posted For Book 3 In The Series As Well!. This book continues the incredible journey into The Malazan Empire while focusing on different characters for the most part from "Gardens of the Moon”. Erikson delivers another outstanding novel. If you’re thinking of reading the series, you will be highly rewarded and entertained! My review of book 3 “Memories of Ice” goes into more detail as to why this series of books and this author should be considered as the touchstone for the fantasy genre as it stands today!
