Descent of Angels by Mitchel Scanlon Book Summary

The planet of Caliban exists much as it has for thousands of years – the knightly orders protect the common people, fighting back the beasts that lurk in the depths of the seemingly endless forests. Young Zahariel and Nemiel aspire to join the greatest of the orders, led by the example of mighty Lion El’Jonson and his vision of a peaceful and unified world. But the coming of the Imperium brings new concerns and a new destiny for the Lion as part of the Great Crusade, and the sons of Caliban must decide if they will follow him to glory among the stars.

Kind of stumbled in the second half. For a book that relished every detail, the change in the Lion near the end of the novel feels relatively unexplained. Spoilers: Particularly with attias and eliath like why do they deserve his scorn? Like I could zahariel and luther because he might've seen through the details they left out regarding the bomb, and although it seems a bit odd that he would admonish the forces that just saved his life by sending israfel to caliban especially considering that israfel is not a calabinite I can see the line of reason, but are attias and eliath just in trouble because they are friends with zahariel? Why is nemiel still in favor? What happened to all the good will that the lion had for zahariel prior? Is this intended to be the mystery at the end of the book? If it is explained later in the series and this was all intentional that i fell hook line and sinker for then I will change my review to 5 stars.

Missed opportunities. The pacing of the beginning to middle was too slow. The dialogue was not great throughout. There were a lot of missed opportunities. The characters lacked the gravitas that the characters of the prior books had. Everything after endriago was pretty good. The prologue and epilogue were trash.

Terrible. Terrible

Meh. I have read nearly every single 40k book black library has released in the past 10-15 years. And I must say, both of the dark angels books in the horus heresy series were two of the most dissappointing. It was well written, and the second time I read them I liked them a LITTLE more than the first time, but they were far from the best. Most of the events of this book take place before the emperor even arrives on the planet and meets his son, so a vast majority of the book is battles with essentially industrial weaponry, though tword the end in really gets more into the 40k universe. I was very disappointed with these 2 books, regardless.

What is this story doing here?. This story was listed as next in the series of the Horus Heresy. It has NOTHING to do with that. I forced myself almost halfway through this D&D adventure before giving up. Not only did it not extend the ongoing storyline of the previous books in the HH series, it actually acted as a circuit breaker, taking me completely out of the ongoing storyline without giving me anything in return. Oh, and it's badly written as well, a walking catalogue of philosophizing monologues, flat dialog, and cliched "action" segments. This really and truly has nothing to do with the HH and very, very little to do with WH40K.

Insightful. So I’m sure you’ll see the reviews saying this is unnecessary, but this is the first book in the series to really delve into what life was like on a Pre-imperium world, and not just any, but one that a Primarch was on. Getting to see how The Lion rises to prominence, what it’s like for humans, the Emperor himself makes an appearance, which frankly I’d read an entire book just because he shows up. You see the foundations of important players later on, so it’s a lot of groundwork, personally I view it as well worth it. Also SPOILERS This is the first sign of Tzeentch in the Horus Heresy series, we’ve had Nurgle and Slaanesh, now I’m curious how long before Khorne happens (first time reader here)

Great knightly tale. Prior to reading this book I had read Luther and really enjoyed it, I didn’t know much about the dark angels origins or really understand it. The story is focused on Zahariel, mainly and through his eyes, you can enter the world of Caliban. And see the dangers it faces, and join the Order a group of knights from all backgrounds with a goal to protect the realm from the monsters that threaten it. And journey past Caliban and into the stars, under the banner of the Lion.

Forgiven..... If you have any interest in the first legion background... This goes full caliban on you...

Great read but what the .......!. Ok firstly just want to say that the book was a great read. It was refreshing to read about the beginnings of a Space Marine legion. Whilst it was a great read it left me severely disappointed with the last third of the novel, it positively ran through a huge section of the life of the Dark Angels almost as if the author was bored and wanted it over or the editor just cut huge swathes of the novel out to keep the page count low!!!!! Despite this enjoy the read but be warned. Happy reading & onto the next in the series ;)

Not bad but.... Quite a nice reading iwas expecting a little more from this book, don't have the dramatic edge of the other Horus heresy novels. Fun to read, but will be probably and rapidly forgotten

Meh. Not the greatest in the collection. More so to do with home world business and not much (comparative to others) much about their Primarch. Nothing to do with the Heresy at all or contributes to the story (that is apparent)

Skarbrand. I love this series can't wait to read legion next

Better than popular opinion. I liked this book but it could have been better. I am sure most of the disappointment I have read about this book comes from the break in the main storyline. As we know this series is set mainly at the end of the crusade. In this book the story mainly focuses on the origins of the Dark Angels and their primarch Lion El'Johnson. I found the back story surrounding the Order to be well written and interesting. This story comprises most of the book. It isn't exactly 50/50. The story then transitions from The Order to The Dark Angels. I would rather the author spent more time describing the process in which the men were physically transformed into astartes. I think an opportunity was missed here. Additionally the story telling of the Sarosh campaign appears rushed. The conclusion of the book is also rushed and on reflection really damaged the overall novel. I think this book should have been another 10-15% longer and it would have been a winner. Overall I liked it. Thanks for the interesting read Scanlon.
