This article details the process, implementation and outcomes of the Harrow PCT HIV Testing in Primary Care Pilot study, which ran between October 2008 and March 2009. The pilot study was developed to increase the number of HIV tests being performed within Harrow among both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals, in order to reduce the incidence of late diagnosis, and also the stigma and prejudice associated with HIV testing among professionals and the general population. The article also provides recommendations for the further delivery of HIV testing within primary care and the development of the role of the Community HIV Clinical Nurse Specialist in relation to both HIV testing and enhanced services for individuals living with HIV within primary care.
