The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “Joyce’s beguiling debut is [a] modest-seeming story of ‘ordinary’ English lives that enthralls and moves you as it unfolds.”—People (four stars)

IN DEVELOPMENT AS A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE • LONGLISTED FOR THE MAN BOOKER PRIZE • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST

Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning a letter arrives, addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl, from a woman he hasn’t heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye. But before Harold mails off a quick reply, a chance encounter convinces him that he absolutely must deliver his message to Queenie in person. In his yachting shoes and light coat, Harold Fry embarks on an urgent quest. Determined to walk six hundred miles to the hospice, Harold believes that as long as he walks, Queenie will live. A novel of charm, humor, and profound insight into the thoughts and feelings we all bury deep within our hearts, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry introduces Rachel Joyce as a wise—and utterly irresistible—storyteller.

The unlikely pilgrimage of Harold Fry. Such a profound read! By the end of Harold's journey I was worn out by all the psychological twists and turns. But isn't that life in many ways. I found myself rooting for Harold and Maureen as if they were real characters. Looking forward to another novel by Rachel Joyce!

Wonderful!. Such an honest and raw tale. Captivating!

1 of my all life favorites. I have felt "stunned," is all I am capable of expressing, from the first pages; his walk/thoughts became my own struggles/everyone's own lives. From my depth & all my heart, I have enormous gratitude for this read. I will treasure it for all of my own remaining years.

A gentle book but powerful. The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry seems like a simple tale but is so much more. The act of setting out on a journey, completely unprepared and unplanned is a great learning voyage for both Harold and for the reader. It is a beautiful tale about aging, about regrets, about hope and faith. I recommend it.

Forrest Gump. "Forrest Gump" without the humor.

Great story well written!. Beautiful prose. I loved the story- it's like a parable, rich and multilayered. Great read.

One of those books. That make you feel good. I didn’t want the book to end. The author has a way of writing that’s flows so elegantly, almost like pros. Just a fantastic book.

Among Steinbeck's Most Compelling. This is a British novel, granted...but my mind travels back to 'Grapes of Wrath' and 'Cannery Row'. Harold Fry picks up the trail blazed by many a Steinbeck character.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Frey. I saw this book in a London bookshop and was intrigued by the title and was so captivated by the story that I read the entire book on one plane ride. It touched me on many levels: the gradual drift apart and reconciliation of a husband and wife dealing with loss; the search for meaning in life as you grow old; a mother and a father's struggle with raising a child. I would recommend this book highly. Robert H.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. I read a positive NYT review that enticed me to read this book. A fantastic journey through the lives and loves of a middle aged couple. While the specifics of the tale will not apply to all the overall message of relationships, secrets, family history and, ultimately love, will appeal to all. A truly wonderful and uplifting story.

Harold Fry. So well written - this said by a UCLA English major who hasn't read any good fiction since Freedom by Jonathan Franzen. You"ll appreciate the beauty of it's language and the enthralling plot.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. A sweet, touching story of love and life, written with a warm heart and great knowledge of aging and dying, this book is a joy.

The unlikely pilgrimage of Harold Fry. I so enjoyed this book...it was beautiful...one of the best books I've read in awhile....I savored every minute of it!

What a pleasure. Rachael Joyce has done the miraculous with her first book. Harold Fry is as real a person as any you are likely to meet. The story is at first improbable, then unlikely, and finally, by the end, almost inevitable. Harold, Maureen, and Queenie are as real as anyone i know; a god-like accomplishment for an author if ever there was one. I have already ordered a hardcover to share with friend since it is terribly difficult to press a digital copy into the hands of someone with the words, "You HAVE to read this. You will love it."

Touching. The story of Harold Fry brings hope to our ordinary lives!

One of the bests. I'm usually a fan of non fiction but this book was incredible.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. Beautiful book about one man's journey through the English countryside and his quest for discovering the meaning Of his life. A slow yet soothing read that needs to be savored-not rushed through. Only attractive to someone that has a long life and is able to comprehend life's nuances and complications, it's depth and heights. Great character development. Beautifully written.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fru. So well written, I felt like I was walking every step with him.

The unlikely pilgrimage of Harold Fry. Thought provoking!

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. It's a pleasant read with a few surprising moments. No great epiphanies, and the writing average, nothing superb. I read it for a book club.

A Necessary Pilgrimage. It's the unsettling, unspoken feelings that bind us as humans--suppression, dishonesty, regret, and pain. And when we take this cathartic journey with Harold, we begin to understand ourselves and our capacity for compassion.

absolutely FABULOUS. the book is so well done, and the ending is truly STUPENDOUS. Don't miss it

The unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. A charming book about a retired man whose life has become boring and predictable. When he finds out about an old co worker who is in hospice, he sets out spontaneously walking to her hospice in the opposite part of the county to "save" her as she "saved" him years ago. He is old, out of shape and unprepared and finds it hard to walk to the Post Office but he is determined to walk from one end of the country to the other to save Queenie. Along the way he meets lots of characters and learns a lot about his life and love. Once again Queenie saves Harold. I recommend it!

What a remarkable book! I loved it!. It was so real, so detailed, it is so believable, and also an ending that I didn’t expect! I want to read more of this author’s works now. Reminds me of Eric Backman, tough topics written beautifully!

Off putting. Most of the time a woman author writing in a man’s can get things right but this story was a man’s voice with a woman’s sensibilities and observations. It felt like a forced movie script of A Man named Ove meets Forest Gump.

One of the best books this year!. This book is so well written, it was a joy to read. I was right there with Harold first sunrise and suffered his blisters. An amazingly great read and I, who am an avid reader, recommend it highly.

Walk On.. This is a wonderful book. It tells the story of a person much like you and me, struggling to get through this life and to make things right. In the end, the answers are clear, even through our tears. Life is a journey, Look around you, Listen to the world, Love yourself and others , Laugh heartedly with them. We are all in this together.

The unlikely pilgrimage of Harold fry. Very good story of love and forgiveness. I loved the book.

Beautifully written. The simple, stunning beauty of Chapter 31 alone is worth the entire book.

The unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. Questions of worldview permeate this book and need to be read, shared and discussed with other pilgrims like those of us who read and enjoyed this book. Questions at end excellent places to land.

Deeply touching. A simply written, beautiful work. As your journey with Harold unfolds, you are drawn into to this simple man's complicated quest for love and forgiveness. There is a small piece of everyone in Harold and Maureen Fry. A deeply touching and wonderful story. Read this book.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. What an enjoyable read. Loved the descriptions of the many characters he meets along the way. Watching Harold unravel and discover his true self along with the mystery of his journey keeps the story moving. Read this on flights between CT & CO. The flights went by like a breeze.
