The Stench of Honolulu by Jack Handey Book Summary

The legendary Deep Thoughts and New Yorker humorist Jack Handey is back with his very first novel-a hilarious, absurd, far-flung adventure tale.

The Stench of Honolulu

Are you a fan of books in which famous tourist destinations are repurposed as unlivable hellholes for no particular reason? Read on!

Jack Handey's exotic tale is full of laugh-out-loud twists and unforgettable characters whose names escape me right now. A reliably unreliable narrator and his friend, who is some other guy, need to get out of town. They have a taste for adventure, so they pay a visit to a relic of bygone days-a travel agent-and discover an old treasure map. She might have been a witch, by the way. Our heroes soon embark on a quest for the Golden Monkey, which takes them into the mysterious and stinky foreign land of Honolulu. There, they meet untold dangers, confront strange natives, kill and eat Turtle People, kill some other things and people, eat another thing, and discover the ruins of ancient civilizations.

As our narrator says, "The ruins were impressive. But like so many civilizations, they forgot the rule that might have saved them: Don't let vines grow all over you."

The Stench of Triumph. No words can describe how much I am being in love with this book's words.. Except the words within the book itself, I suppose.

Hilarious. My favorite comedy writer all time. Hilarious book!

Just incredible. Funniest thing read in years. Impossible to stop after the first page. Pure stenchite.

Five stars. Had me losing it a few times. Easy, quick read. Very entertaining. Jokes on pretty much every sentence. I 100% the character wrote this book.

Ridiculous and Wonderfully Absurd. This story has comedy gems that had me howling out loud. Mad Libs on Steroids is like saying Funny Made Super-funny so I don't see the issue there. In the pseudoscientific equation of comedy, tragedy plus time, often forgotten is just the right brand of surprise. Give me more Handey Brand surprise. Quick read is perfect for iPhone. Thank you.

Best Travel Guide I've Read. I felt fully prepared for my trip to Hawaii for my conference after reading this. Axelson from the regional office was going to be there and the last thing I wanted was to get caught with my pants down. We never ran into any of the people in the book which was weird because we were completely expecting to. I don't know who Jack Handey is but he tells it like it is.

Having lived in Hawaiii, I thought it was a true story. As I read the book, so many scenarios were lifelike and vague, that I came to realise that this very almost accurate documentary script was just a treatment. You know like a treatment for malaise or just plain old whooping cough. But nooooo, it turned out to be a work of fiction. I figured that out when I read the author's notes in the appendix. All in all, a great one sitting read. As long as you are not on the throne. Then some one may bang on the door and ask you to bookmark your page, wash your hands and then continue to read in another stall. (I didn't know there were time limits in those thrones in department store.) hmmm, who knew. Well, anyway. Buy the book. You won't regret it. It has everything you want in a book except maybe, a background running dialogue from David Attenborough.

A Wonderful Stench. This book is hilarious. I purchased it after I randomly remembered Toonces the driving cat and then googled Toonces and discovered that Jack Handey created him. Of course I instantly remembered how funny his Deep Thoughts segments on SNL were but I'd never realized that he was also the mastermind behind Toonces and the Unfrozen Cave Man Lawyer. That's when I looked for Handey's recent work and found The Stench of Honolulu. Imagine the creative genius of Handey's SNL skits combined into a hilarious, out-of-left field adventure novel. It's unbelievable. His ability to keep the story on a line while incorporating the most unanticipated, hilarious sequences is masterful. I can't wait to read his other books now. Definitely pick up this novel. You'll be rollin'.

Jack deserves an award. The Stench of Honolulu Review The Stench of Honolulu is a very good book. It may be one of the funniest pieces of entertainment that I have ever read. I thought that as well as being hilarious it was dramatic and detailed writing. But the best thing going for it is it’s humor. It’s edge with corn, hard, dry humor. I have tried reading a good book since The Series of Unfortunate Events, Huckelberry Finn, The Sirens of Titan, and the Harry Potter series of books, which all I very much enjoyed. I had tried to read a number of books including The Percy Jackson series which I did not enjoy, as well as many other books and book series that did not entertain me, but bore me to death. But this book, I highly recommend. There is some graphic violence, and some sexual references and drinking, but it is not strong on any sort of terrible thing for children. To parents who want to read this to your kid, I suggest that you should read it too your kid, but some things should be censored or skipped.

The Stench of Honolulu. What an absolute waste of money and time.

Meh. Wasn't as funny as I thought it'd be but was still entertaining.

True brilliance. One of the world's greatest humorists will now do his funny cowboy dance.

Mad Libs on Steroids. Looking for a funny adventure, not a Mad Libs on steroids. I was halfway through the book and decided to give up...it wasn't getting any better. This book had a stench of its own.

Complete nonsense. I like funky books, but this one is compete nonsense. It is hard to believe someone published it. Don't waste your money.

Awful. I realize it is supposed to be satire but it was simply terrible.

Deeply hilarious. Imagine a story written by the character behind Jack Handey's Deep Thoughts. It is like hundreds of these thoughts strung together into a wild and ridiculous story, each line further distorted in the twisted narcissistic lens of the narrator. If you skim through it you may miss the humor--almost every line has some joke embedded and some are not so obvious. Read carefully and you can understand the depth of thought that can only be the handiwork of Jack Handey.
