The Duchess War by Courtney Milan Book Summary

Miss Minerva Lane is a quiet, bespectacled wallflower, and she wants to keep it that way. After all, the last time she was the center of attention, it ended badly—so badly that she changed her name to escape her scandalous past. Wallflowers may not be the prettiest of blooms, but at least they don’t get trampled. So when a handsome duke comes to town, the last thing she wants is his attention.

But that is precisely what she gets.

Because Robert Blaisdell, the Duke of Clermont, is not fooled. When Minnie figures out what he’s up to, he realizes there is more to her than her spectacles and her quiet ways. And he’s determined to lay her every secret bare before she can discover his. But this time, one shy miss may prove to be more than his match…

The Duchess War is the first full-length book (97,000 words) in the Brothers Sinister series. It is preceded by The Governess Affair, a prequel novella. Each book stands alone, but those who prefer to read in order might want to read that book first.

Wonderful!. Everything was wonderful: the descriptions, the history, the characters...Very creative storyline, and I was happily surprised that a wedding wasn't the end of the book. I will definitely be reading more of this series.

Ehh.... It was slow. I get that this took place in a historical setting and not much was going on, but man was this slow. The ending was cute, but I honestly would not recommend this to anyone. Although, kudos to the editor I saw almost no errors.

Loved it!. This was such a great story! Loved the characters and the writing, two thumbs up!

Trashy to make up for bad writing. In a good romance, the writing should not have to resort to trash in order to create a romantic novel. Would not recommend it.

Loved it.. Enjoyed this story immensely. Can't wait to read about Oliver.

Mr. Very enjoyable.

💜. This author has a gift for wildly, improbably, perfectly romantic scenes and dialogue. If you’re looking for a story that manages to be fanciful and substantive, look no further.

LOVE IT!!!!. Everything is perfect about this story ! 100% recommended!!!!!!!

Awesome. This book was beautiful....spirited....funny.... Very different. I've read tons of historical romances and I didn't want to read this one at first because I figured it would be just like all the others. It is not. The main characters were is interesting and layered. The author made you care about them as if you knew them. This book is wonderfully written. I couldn't stop reading it. I must read the next books in the series.

Amazing!. This was such a good story! I'm a hopeless romantic...

Sooooooo good. I literally read this and one day! Could not put it down well worth the money

Wonderful! Fabulous!. I am a . . . connoisseur, if you will, of historical romance. I've read myriad really, really bad ones; I've read a fair number of really good stories, even some I deemed great. "The Duchess War" is not great. I'm not one for the overuse of adjectives, but had I a thesaurus handy, I would list every adjective for "EVEN GREATER THAN GREAT" available in order to describe this book. I would also, were it possible, give this book more than 5 stars! This is decidedly not "the same old story". That Minnie is not of the peerage is wonderfully refreshing; that Robert doesn't want to be is simply genious! But what really got me was just how well I found myself connecting with Minnie & Robert. The author made me feel what they were feeling: my heart literally ached for the sharp betrayals both had endured as children from those who were supposed to have, almost by definition, loved & cared for them the most. This is one of those books that I am likely to read & re-read again & again. Simply marvelous!

I was totally invested!. This book has such enriched characters that have soul. The storyline is engaging and I appreciated the detail. I loved this book and am about to start the next one. Worth every penny!

Awesome!. Finally a romance with great dialogue!

A favorite. This story was interesting and had twists and turns that kept me reading well past my bedtime. I read The Governess Affair first and enjoyed it, so thought I'd give this first in the Sinister Brothers Series a try. So glad I did, such a pleasure. I've read many romances and this one is a true five star. Thank you Courtney, for giving me something to look forward to at the end of a long day. Your books have been a real find! Now to the next one--A Kiss for Midwinter. P.S. some racy sex, but not overwhelming.

Loved it!. November 2018 I didn’t remember anything that happened in this book and I’m so glad I reread it. It was amazing and like reading it for the first time all over again. I can’t wait to finish this series. —————————————— March 2015 this book was amazing. Hands down one of the best historical romance books i've read. I really connected with the characters. Can't wait to read the rest.

A great read!. Thoughtful, well written, and just a delight to read from start to finish. Worth every penny.

Unique romance.. Liked story because unique in that couple waited till marriage to mate & first time was not bliss or perfect. Story was entertaining. I continued to read when should have been up doing chores.

Great read. Enjoyed every moment of the book. In a moment, will expect one thing to happen only to read that something else entirely happened. The characters are lovable and the story line was good.

The Duchess War. Really enjoyed this book 3 1/2 stars loved Robert and Minnie loved his sense of humor and that she was smart, the mom what a piece of work at least she turned around and Oliver's mom the way she treated Robert I was glad she apologized. It was a good read I will read the next in the series

The duchess War. Interesting.

Banter!. I adore the banter. It is absolutely a delight. I was taking screenshots to share with my offspring.

Enjoyed the book.. Enjoyed the book will read the rest in the series. Wonderful romance with a HEA. My favorite kind.

The Duchess War. I was pretty impressed with the prequel to this series, so I had high hopes for this book. Courtney Milan did not disappoint with The Duchess War. I fell in love with Robert and Minnie, and I enjoyed their interaction. I really like the intricacies in the plot, and I appreciated the author's note at the end explaining the historical aspects in the story. I know this story is set during the Victorian Age, however, at its core this is a love story. It's why I read romance novels, and Milan knows how to write a good one. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series which I've already purchased.

Great read!. This is one of the best historical romance novels I’ve read in some time! The plot was well-developed, with enough romance and suspense to keep me saying “just one more chapter” until I finished the book.

Top notch. So many romance novels are predictable and cliche. Oh my Lord, this one is not. The characters are complex and lovable, but not boringly perfect - or cute. They are fascinating and unique. There is mystery and suspense. There are villains and one of them has a transformation that is not forced or silly. It is important. And beautiful. The backstories to our leading couple allows for dimension and novelty. You better set aside a few hours because this one will be very hard to put down.

This book is amazing. The best historical romance I've read. Hands down. And I've read a lot. I loved it. I am absolute in love with the Duke of Clermont and Minnie is a formidable heroine.

Enthralling and engrossing - easily stands out in its genre. This story pulls you in with real characters, real character development, and real issues. The characters are not simply prey to their own stupidity (which, I’ve observed, is so often the reason that characters in romance books don’t get together until the end). They are real, flesh-and-blood, with complicated emotions and motivations that make them all the more believable. Ms. Milan also has a talent for real character development and story development. Even the so-called villains are often found to be more complicated below the surface. She deftly avoids all the pitfalls of other books in the same genre. There are no declarations of love ridiculously early in the acquaintance of the main characters, and thus such pronouncements of love avoid seeming hollow. The scenes are so well-described that you actually feel you are experiencing life in Victorian England - the sights, sounds, the smells, both pleasant and unpleasant - create a vivid setting rather than a mere backdrop. I enjoyed all the little historical details that helped to create a very real picture of life in that era, and made the world she creates feel all the more realistic. Spoilers ahead! … Another area that stood out where she avoided cliché was the wedding night scene, which I thoroughly appreciated. I thought the way she handled sex in general was refreshing and honest, which held much more allure for me than the improbable scenes and descriptions of other books. Long story short, this is definitely worth a read.

Must Read. Wonderful story!! Loved how all issues were unravelled at the appropriate time. Kept me interested, beautifully written. You will enjoy it !!

Clever writer!. I love her books. What a great twist in this one. I look forward to seeing her other books. Thank you.

The quality of fiction is not strained. I'm annoyed at myself for reading the whole thing, but it wouldn't be fair to review it unless I had. I understand that one must suspend one's disbelief to enjoy a story, but not even a forklift could achieve that in this case. The plot is contrived and ludicrous, the 'witty' repartee scant and falling short of the mark, and the period details seemed made up and anachronistic. Then for a moment, I thought we were rescued -- when it was just the two main characters alone, it got much better. Their falling in love seemed much more believable. Only for it to sink back down again, fairly quickly. The whole climactic event seemed inaccurate and just silly--all torturously contrived to arrive at the high points she had in mind. If she's just going to make things up, she would do far better to write stories that simply revolve around the characters, not try to drag in outside events that are improbable at best. There is a knack for understanding the characters psyches, and how their needs would mesh. The author should stick to her strengths, and avoid her weaknesses – or do some research. Or just read someone else who has a sense of period. There were a few pleasant moments, but there were so many more jarring ones that I consider this a waste of my time.

Has plot. For once a romance novel with a plot beyond "happily ever after". Great book.

Emotional. This is a great book, the emotions are realistic.

I had to read from sample. I had to order this from the sample I read and I was glad I purchased this book. Very well written.

Great book. I don't read much but I couldn't seem to put this book down can't wait to read the rest of the series

Much too long. The book would have been rated higher if it had ended a couple of hundred pages earlier. It became too long and boring. I don't think Miss Milan knows when to end a story

The Duchess War. I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review. This story mixed politics of the time, with a mystery and a romance and ended it with a surprise. I like the way the author releases her story in small chunks. When you are down on your luck it is easy to let others kick you and had the Duke not found Minnie that is what would have happened. Robert had his own agenda and was not looking for love when he met Minnie who had fallen on very hard times but who was still helping the workers with hygiene issues to help prevent disease. The book was set in Leicester and it mixed the abuse of powers by the head of the militia into the plot as well as claims of crimes of sedition. All in all a great story, great plot, great romance.

Best romance book I've read in 4 years. This book is an utter rarity, unlike many of the pieces found under the romance section on ibooks, this one is written by an obviously intelligent woman. She manages to write substantial characters that maintain actual personality and creates not only a realistic but an inspiring female character. The plot is gripping and the dialogue is both entertaining and believable (another rarity). I cannot recommend this book enough especially if you ever get frustrated with the absence of feminism or gender education in romance novels. I was enthralled from start to finish, my only criticism is that it made me miss several hours of sleep I simply couldn't leave the stories or characters behind.

Wonderful read. What a refreshingly different storyline. Loved it, beautifully written kudos to the author. The sub plots in preparation for the follow up books are there to tweak your interest not just leave you hanging off a cliff, very nicely done. Well recommended at the top of its genre! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The duchess war. This series is wonderful ready to read the next

Great. What a surprisingly great book. I didn't rate a 5 because it was mind blowing, I did it because it was witty, clever, intriguing, loveable and really well written.

The Dutchess War. Absolutely loved this book!

The Duchess War. Loved this book, enjoyed the story and loved the 2 main characters. The main character of the heroine was totally different to any character I have read before. I liked her characters flaws and that she was also strong. Great plot also.

The Duchess War. Well written fun read.

Enchanting. The characters are real - funny, flawed, loveable. Their problems are real and not the usual superficial crap you read in other books. I would read this book over and over again!

A good read. Really enjoyed reading this book, can't wait to read the rest in this series.

Great ending. Very few books in this genre have good endings. Most have cliche lines or cheesy love you's, or it's just rushed. This one is patient, well thought out, true to its characters and has warm closure.

The Duchess War. Intelligent dialogue. Character driven plot. Fresh ideas. Enough detail to give verisimilitude. I've been looking for a new-to-me author and I think Courtney Milan may be it.

Charming, sexy and it has a plot!. It's so hard to find good historical romance novels. This one has it all...it's well written, the characters are real, flawed, funny and human, the story has twists and turns and doesn't just make things easy, and YES the sex is hot but in a very surprising way for a romance novel. I couldn't put this one down and I can't wait to read more from this author.

The Duchess War. The characters in this book are too consumed with their childhood trauma that it takes away and distracts you so much from the love story.I usually enjoy these three or four book series but I will stop here and look elsewhere for a less depressing read

Loved it!. U wont regret reading this book
