Hard and painful to read. I get it! Now I completely understand the real story behind BUtterfield 8, the Elizabeth Taylor movie. O’Hara is not the easiest or calmest read, but he obviously felt compelled to get the muck and filth of his era out of his system. It’s hard and by the end it’s painful. Leaning on despair. I need a crutch after finishing the book, or perhaps a good stiff drink, and I’m not even a drinker. Rise above the quintessential racial and ethnic bigotry if you are tempted to read it. But DO READ IT!
UNAPPRECIATED. O’Hara was not properly appreciated for his creativity and intelligent writing. I was happy to have been introduced to his books by an old family friend. I have read two of his books (BUTTERFIELD 8 & APPOINTEMENT IN SAMARRA), and look forward to reading TEN NORTH FREDERICK.
