Publiée pour la première fois en 1922, Amok raconte l'histoire d'un médecin en proie à une passion dévorante. Se livrant à un récit confessionnel, le docteur K., dévoile au lecteur la façon dont il a sombré peu à peu dans une folie destructrice. Dans la préface signée par Romain Rolland, il est écrit qu'il est ici question de « l'enfer de la passion au fond duquel se tord, brûlé, mais éclairé par les flammes de l'abîme, l'être essentiel, la vie cachée. »
Dans cette nouvelle édition dont la mise en page a été optimisée afin d'en faciliter la lecture, cette nouvelle est suivie par trois autres : Lettre d'une inconnue, La ruelle au clair de lune et Les yeux du frère éternel, texte présent dans le recueil original mais qui fut écarté des éditions publiées après 1930.
