Eragons liv ændres for altid, da han under en jagt i skoven finder en smuk blankpoleret sten. Han og dragen Saphira må flygte fra hjemegnen og hovedkulds ud i en verden, hvor magi og ukendte kræfter råder. Med sig har Eragon landsbyens gamle historiefortæller, der indvier ham i Rigets historie og hemmeligheder. Efterhånden forstår Eragon, hvorfor Rigets konge har sendt sine mørke tjenere ud efter ham, og hvorfor han for enhver pris må kæmpe mod kongens grusomheder.
