Doc McCoy es un encantador, amoral y calculador criminal que, tras salir de la cárcel, planifica el atraco a un banco de una pequeña ciudad de Texas junto con su esposa Carol y un peligroso psicópata, Rudy Torrento. Aunque el robo sale tal como lo habían planeado, la fuga hacia California para cruzar después la frontera mexicana se complica, ya que el matrimonio McCoy no sólo tiene a la policía pisándole los talones, sino también a un furioso y vengativo Torrento, a quien Doc cree haber asesinado inmediatamente después del atraco. Durante su odisea en busca de la libertad, Doc y Carol McCoy se encontrarán con numerosas dificultades, pero también con inestimables ayudas.
La huida fue una novela que en un principio pasó totalmente desapercibida, hasta que en 1972 Sam Peckinpah la adaptó al cine -una áspera road movie protagonizada por Steve McQueen y la que fuera su esposa en la vida real, Ali MacGraw- y contribuyó con ello a conferirle el estatus de clásico que se merecía desde su publicación.
