Eça de Queirós, quizá el más grande de los novelistas del XIX portugués, viajó a Egipto en 1869 con el fin de redactar una serie de crónicas acerca de la inauguración del canal de Suez, la mayor obra de ingeniería de su época, que cautivaría la imaginación de todo Occidente.
En lo que será para él un viaje iniciático, un choque cultural con lo real y lo ideal de Oriente, descubrirá lo exótico pero también lo miserable, rasgos que fusiona en sus descripciones literarias de marcada influencia flaubertiana, llenas de perspicacia e ingenio. La Alejandría que vio pasear a Cleopatra se convierte a sus ojos en un lugar sórdido, con un barrio egipcio sucio y pobre, y un barrio europeo de aires provincianos. El Cairo, por el contrario, le resulta fascinante por su pintoresca inmundicia. Pocos años después, Eça de Queirós volverá a la zona para detallar la destrucción de Alejandría en las seis memorables piezas que constituyen "Los ingleses en Egipto", incluidas asimismo en este volumen.
