The Last Star by Rick Yancey Book Summary

The highly-anticipated finale to the New York Times bestselling 5th Wave series.

Includes an exclusive diary entry from Cassie!

The enemy is Other. The enemy is us. They’re down here, they’re up there, they’re nowhere. They want the Earth, they want us to have it. They came to wipe us out, they came to save us.

But beneath these riddles lies one truth: Cassie has been betrayed. So has Ringer. Zombie. Nugget. And all 7.5 billion people who used to live on our planet. Betrayed first by the Others, and now by ourselves.

In these last days, Earth’s remaining survivors will need to decide what’s more important: saving themselves . . . or saving what makes us human.

Praise for The Last Star
“Yancey’s prose remains achingly precise, and this grows heavier, tighter, and more impossible to put down as the clock runs out…this blistering finale proves the truth of the first two volumes: it was never about the aliens.”—Booklist, starred review

“A haunting, unforgettable finale.”—Kirkus Reviews

"Rick Yancey sticks the (alien) landing in the action-packed finale to his The 5th Wave invasion saga . . . . And the author gives us a major dose of girl power as well, pairing Cassie and Ringer for an uneasy alliance that provides the best moments in this fantastic series’ thought-provoking and satisfying conclusion.”—USA Today

Just OK. Ok so I loves the 5th wave, the Infinite sea was good because it gave you more character detail and made you realize more of the big picture sort of speak. But the last star to me was a bit of a let down. It was a good easy read but I found myself completely disconnected from the characters. In the 5th you are totally connected to Cassie and through her to humanity. You have hope and of course the ever present possibility of love. Third kind of gives you a different side and tries to get you invested in the other characters but I found that in trying to do this it disconnected you from Cassie and kind of "forced" or tried to anyway, to connect you to Ringer. I really didn't care too much for that. I mean it took one book to really get me into Cassie's head and come to care for her and those around her and to become invested in her whole "world". Infinite Sea just brushed over her and tried really hard to make us think of other things and other people and is there a love triangle, isn't there? Are the aliens there or is it something bigger? So it's very different it becomes very abstract and so do your feelings about the characters. They kind of because two dimensional. I found myself just wanting to finish the book already. Now I come to the end and feel like, ok whatever! Really?!??!! I read three freaken books and feel nothing, no love lost, no sadness, just "wow I kind of wasted some time but I guess it's better than just wondering about the end. A lot of people compared the end with Tris and the divergent Series but really I think the writer didn't allow us to feel the same connection. I was Truly invested in Tris, with Cassie I was remove... I just wanted and end so I could read the next book. I really just feel Blah about this whole series. It started great then went to good to just fine I guess!

😭😭😭. This was a great book, but I wish it ended a little differently but all in all it was good and the ending made me cry.

ugh. I was SO excited for this book because I was obsessed with the first 2. I just finished it and the ending was so horrible and unnecessary🙄 it was also really sloppy and unrealistic especially for a dystopian book. this book really disappointed me!!!!

What a waste. This book had so much potential but felt rushed. The ending felt cold and didn't make much sense. Ultimately a disappointing finish to what could've been a great trilogy.

Decided It's Not Worth Finishing (Disappointed). I read the first two books, and I eagerly waited for this book to be released. I was expecting much more great writing from this author, but what I received was a book written in diary format that is simply annoying to read. Quite frankly, this book is an utter letdown earning the the title of "useless kindling". I could not stomach reading another page of this book after I turned to page 253. Truthfully, I amazed that I tortured myself through so many pages before realizing that the writing style would remain childish and written in a whim-like fashion. In my humble opinion, it appears that the author was writing filler to meet a publishing deadline. This is nowhere near a good read in any way, shape, or form. Rarely do I ever scold an author, but I have to say shame on you for writing such a horribly delivered book (diary). I bought the hardcover editions of all three books, and I sincerely would like my money back for this edition. The bottom line is that this is not worthy of being read at all. From syntax to utter lack of intelligent dialogue throughout this book, the reader will be left wondering "okay, so when will the gears shift to make this tolerable?" Again, I'm sorry for harping on the author's creativity, but there is nothing creative or good about this book. Maybe next time, the author will actually take the time to write a decent book and ignore a publishing deadline by writing an utter piece of crap. Extremely disappointed with the author and with paying hard-earned money for the hardcover version of this pile of garbage. Do NOT waste your money ... find a real book to read worthy of your time and effort. Thumbs down all the way folks! 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

Not for everyone apparently.. Not sure why some of the top reviews are bad. Overall it was a great series with a compelling story. I was thrown off in the second book when the perspective of the story was no longer from only Cassie, which I thought was good. It allowed us, the readers, to dive into the lives of the other characters as you would in a movie perhaps. I noticed people hating on the “dairy” format of the book which makes no sense. The book is simply written in a way where chapters are written from the perspective of different characters. I honestly felt sad throughout the book because of all of the death, more so the death of pound cake and dumbo. I expected Cassie to die at the end of the series which I think was fitting and obvious. How she died? Well that shocked me a little. Also, I was shocked by those who didn’t die which I won’t spoil and you won’t understand until the very last chapter (you also won’t understand if you only read the last chapter). I think the whole idea of the aliens never being there was interesting too. They never even wanted the planet in the first place. The entire point of them, of the series, sending an entirely automated ship to Earth was to ensure that life on Earth would be stabilized: not necessarily human life (since we are actually the reason why Earth is dying: in the book and in real life now) but life in the aggregate. I feel like the author wanted to point out our population issues and what drives that issue today.

Good, but.... Good book, but the ending left something to be desired, and things unexplained.

I hate you!. Omg I had read the 2nd book and I have been wating for the third and it still hasn't came out yet not even in FLORDIA!!!!

Terrible ending. I was so disappointed in the ending of this book!

The Last Star. So sorry I wasted money buying the last book in this series. The book is very depressing and writing it for teenagers it also disappointing. The first book in this series was excellent with great potential.

Not a great way to wrap it up..... With so many POVs in this last installment, I lost connection with the MCs....

Disappointed. To be honest, I fell in love with the first two books. They had a perfect balance of everything. This one, however, I was very disappointed in. It pained me to even read it. I got halfway through and contemplated not finishing it. If you love this series, do yourself a favor and DO NOT read this last book. Question for the author, how can you start Cassie’s side of the story as journal entries and then kill her off? How does that even make sense?

???. I read the first two books and was waiting for this one to come out but when I was looking at it then it said the due date was on May/12/2016 now it is moved to the 24th I hope this is because he wanted to add more to this book and not because he got lazy one month and did nothing to further develop this hopefully good book.

MUST READ. BEST BOOK EVER!

Omg!. This was the most meaningful and metaphoric book in the series. I ended with so many mixed emotions and a whole different outlook on our world. Get your tissues ready for this one!😭

3rd book a waste. The third book was terrible. Felt like the author ran out of ideas. Plot sucked. Ending was horrible.

Ok until the End. The first two books were great and so was the last star until the ending. Killing the main character was a bad idea. A good series has the main character living in the end. I shouldn't have spent 11 bucks on this.

Subar READ THIS. I ended up liking the book, but I think it was because I was invested in the characters. The amount of repetition in the book was sickening. I was surprised that this was even written by the same author. All of the chapters are very short and most sentences are simple. This book also has very many metaphors that make absolutely no sense, which makes me think the writer wanted readers to believe she was being poetic. Very disappointed. The ending was also very abrupt and was not satisfying to read at all.

The last star. I didn't like the way it ended. Poor poor Sam!!!!!!

waiting restlessly. i have read both books and cant wait to get this one 4 days before my birthday!

The last star. Excellent series. Would love to see a book 4 and see what happens with Sam and Meagen as they grow up.

sir i do not agree with the endgame. explain to me your reasoning of not making ben and cassie endgame......... lit rally mental illness luv

Great Fictional Trilogy Ending. If you have read stories like The Barcode Tattoo and have enjoyed it. You will definitely like reading this trilogy. Unlike other trilogies, the ending will not disappoint.

Last Star.... Very sad... I like sad. So therefore I liked this. After reading this I was just like 😐😧😢. Good series

Pretty good. I liked it as far as the flow of reading went and the storyline was entertaining. Here's what I don't get. (Spoilers!) So they blow up the unmanned ship...great. But if this is part of an alien master plan and they're so advanced they sent an unmanned ship...wouldn't they just send another?

I'm going to need therapy.... Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Mayfly!

Great!!!!!👻😹. The First 2 Books Where Amazing I'm Sure This One Is 10 Times better

Liked It. Let me just say I'm still in shock over it. I cried at the end. It's just SO SAD. I think it was a really good book. Although I wished the book ended differently, it was still beautifully written. God, I wonder is Rick Yancey was inspired by the ending of the Divergent Series: Allegiant.

Amazing 😃😃😄. This trilogy was by far one of the greatest trilogies I've ever read. It was so intense and you couldn't wait to go back to the other persons perspective. I'm super sad that it's now over, but I can't wait for the movies to come out and compare them to the book (the book is always better). Amazing trilogy, sad to see it end, but it's time to move on 😃

Got old.... The body count, the teenage angst, etc...I found myself skipping through sections, skimming the first sentence and the last sentence of paragraphs, to get through the drama filled internal monologue the dominated most of this book. I just kept thinking get to the story already.

So Much Was Unexpected for me. So I’m still trying to figure out what was real as far as the aliens and who was what. This is a decent ending to a good series. I liked it, but I’m still wondering about some things. I know it’s a good series because I’m thinking about what happened next for the characters. It didn’t end in my mind.

🍕. 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕 Good as pizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzza!

Cool. So I just bought the book and so far it's really good, but let me tell you this is a freakin good book series.

Good. This book was good, but I had hoped for a better ending than the one I got.

**spoiler alert** loved 1st two books but the 3rd..... I couldn't put any of the books down. I looked forward to the end, seemed like there was always a lot of sad situations but that there would be a silver lining. Wrong. Killing the lead character, having her lover survive to live a life of wandering the planet alone....really? Icing on the cake is Ben and Ringer live happily ever after with Sam and Ringer's baby (what?!) while Evan is devastated......but at least he's alive and human and the world is kinda saved?! Not an ideal outcome, to say the least. I really thought there was enough sadness in the book to allow for the main group to all make it out alive and together. Surprised this book had such good ratings with the ending that happened. Very disappointed.

The last star. I loved the book so much as I did with the first and second. But what I hated the most was the fact that Cassie died. She should have lived to see the next day. I know she did it to save the world but couldn't some one else in the group do that.

Not worth it. This book is way to much money not worth $10.99

👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼. A great conclusion

Scared. I loved the first two books I'm legit the biggest fan the movie was pretty great too but I'm scared by this summary 😂😂

A must read!. Once I started these books I couldn't put them down! I read the first two within 10 days & actually finished the 2nd one on a plane ride home from overseas. So disappointed the series is over :(

Om nom nom. I'm eating fresh cookies om nom nom. This is gud book. Does anyone know where to buy more cookie dough to make more cookies? I read the infinite sea and can not wait for this to come out and the cookies to come out of the oven.

The Last Star. I have read this entire series from start to finish, and though slightly confusing at times; it was a great read. It surprisingly drew me in though I have never taken interest in the "alien invasion obsession". Possibly it was the characters attitudes or the plot twist after plot twist. I would recommend this book to ANYONE!

Nervous 😁. I'm sure this last book will be amazing just like the other two. The summary is kind of scaring me though because I have no idea what is going to happen. I'm sure it's worth the wait! ❤️😁

The last star. This book ended different than what I had hoped but I can say it was nicely written to the point where the mystery of the plot kept wanting you to read more and not put the book down. I give it 3 stars because I didn't quite like how the book ended, but on the other hand I love the characters of the book and how the author portrayed their personality till the very end. It opened my mind up about humanity, love, sand disaster.

Must Read Trilogy!. I finally at the end of this book realized (what I think) what this entire trilogy was about. Granted that if you loved the first 2 books as I did this started off a little shaky (for me). The whole story with Cassie and Evan wasn't just about a boy loving a girl, but a girl finding the courage within herself to love herself and wanting to give the guys that she cared so much about a fighting chance at life (brother, zombie, and Evan). To be able to sacrifice ones self for someone else is selfless in its own. I loved the story between Cassie and Evan and I think I loved it more as Cassie explained why Evan cared for her so much, her soul, the Essence of who she was. What made Cassie. I get why some people felt the OMG another girl meets bad guy and etc etc, but really that wasn't what the story was truly about although she wanted to be with Evan, she wanted to have a peaceful life for her brother who she had left and well she still didn't give them that, she wanted to. It's truly sad if you think about it. For the most part I enjoyed the last of the trilogy and hope that they hurry and make the second movie for this trilogy. Some of the story lines would make for an awesome movie. Must Must Read!

Ended well. They ended the story as well as possible and I was happy.

Well written perspectives. I think this book blows the other two books before it out of the water. The ability to indivaulize each persons perspective throughout the book is great. If you want to read a book that puts things in other points of view and more this is a great read.

Literally never cried over a fandom this bad. This book physically and emotionally ripped out my heart threw it to a bunch of wild dogs in front of a dumpster and left me with Rick Yancey's beautifully crafted way of words. It's great you should read it.

The Last Star. This is the 3rd and last book in The 5th Wave series by Rick Yancey. The story itself was fine but the language was awful. It's was vulgar and sacrilegious. It ruined the entire book. The book is inappropriate for younger readers. I even know a few who stopped reading it because of the language. It was too offensive for them. I won't read another Yancey book because of it. Too bad because it could have been a good series.

Ticked I wasted 11 bucks on this.. The moment that an author kills the lead is the moment i hate the book and can not be swayed. I dont see why you need to kill of the main character when plenty of other books have the leads live and it is a perfectly good book! Also having Ringer and Ben end up together is like the biggest stab in the back because I was a Pariva shipper so I hate this book.
