Egy napsütötte kaliforniai vasárnapon Bert Cousins hívatlanul betoppan Franny Keating keresztelőjére. Még az est leszállta előtt megcsókolja Franny mamáját, Beverlyt, s ezzel mozgásba lendíti az eseménysort, amely két házasság felbomlásáház és egy mozaikcsalád létrejöttéhez vezet.
Az öt évtizedet felölelő regény a szereplők sorsának egy-egy kulcsmozzanatán keresztül világít rá arra, hogy Bert és Beverly véletlen találkozása milyen hullámokat vet a négy szülő és hat gyermekük életében. A nyarakat Virginiában együtt töltő Keating- és Cousins-gyerekeket a szüleikkel szembeni elégedetlenség hozza egy nevezőre, amelyből az évek során mélyebb, igen sajátos összetartozás is kialakul. Egy tragikus haláleset ugyanakkor szétforgácsolja ezt a mostoha-közösséget.
