Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Book Summary
Victor Frankenstein är en hängiven naturvetenskapsman. Studierna i Ingolstadt - kemi, medicin, anatomi - leder till en besatthet av livets uppkomst och dödens mysterium. Han vill väcka liv i döda ting för att komma närmare skapelsens ursprung och bestämmer sig för att sätta samman en varelse av kroppsdelar från avlidna människor. Men hans försök att ta Skaparens plats blir ödesdigert, och han flyr det monster som vaknar - en ensam, vilsen och skräckinjagande figur som söker sig till människor i de omgivande byarna men jagas på flykten och slutligen bestämmer sig för att hämnas. Mary Shelleys roman är en variation på myten om Prometheus, som stal elden från antikens gudar för att ge den till människorna. Med sin kritik av tidens vetenskapsoptimism och sin djupgående förståelse för människans skräck inför det främmande har Shelley skapat en av världslitteraturens mest ikoniska gestalter. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley [1797-1851] var dotter till filosofen William Godwin och feministen Mary Wollstonecraft och fick en uppfostran präglad av liberala idéer. Sommaren 1816 tillbringade hon vid Genèvesjön i Schweiz, där nattliga samtal med Lord Byron och maken, poeten Percy Bysshe Shelley, väckte idén till Frankenstein, hennes mest kända bok.
